Travelled behind a W reg Vauxhall Chevette L this morning for a while, looked good (despite being a light blue), sounded decent and (if you are that way inclined) smelled good too.

Americans were very good at getting the minimum amount of horsepower per litre they could, though I suppose it made them harder wearing if they weren't stressed so much. It's probably why they look at some of our smaller engines with disdain despite one of our 2L engines kicking out what one of their 5L would!

Both spotted within minutes of each other in Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon:

A X-plate (2000-2001; so just about qualifying for this thread) Rover 45 Club 16v Auto on East Market St. Very tidy looking:

A P-reg FX4 Fairway Driver (1996-97, so getting near the end of production), repurposed as a wedding vehicle, slowly making it's way up Canongate. The first FX4 I've seen in quite some time:

I saw a Honda Civic equivalent of that Rover a couple of days ago (also on an X prefix plate IIRC) but without having a camera or phone to record it ...

Not sure how the ex taxi gets away with a silver on black plate on a 1997ish registration?

Mercedes 300sl gullwing at my local morrisons this evening. Couldn't believe it could be a real one but checked it out and it was. It was absolutely perfect. Attracting quite a lot of interest but no sign of the driver.

Gorgeous looking L reg Porsche 911 (not sure of the exact model) but it had a massive spoiler on the back so looked very cool.

I did think it didn't look quite right considering it was likely resgistered after I was born. Obviously all legal and above-board (wouldn't be allowed out on the road, never mind carrying passengers, otherwise), but it does trigger one's OCD if thought about for long enough!

Hmmmm, sounds a frankenporker.

L- suffix was August 1972 to July 1973.

1974's 911 Carrera 3.0 and 1975's 930 Turbo were the first "911-genesis" Porsche models to feature a OEM whale-tail spoiler, to aid air cooling into the engine.

I really should know what kind it was as i do love a Porsche me, but my best mate has a 911 and goes on about it most all of the time so i've largely zoned out on the different models.

Just another one of the thousands of illegal plates that are on the road which the police do nothing whatsoever about, if they actually clamped down on this it would surely be self funding and probably profitable until such time as people stopped deliberately breaking the law, also add to that the fines that could be raised from the number plate suppliers knowingly supplying the illegal plates

Two from yesterday.

A 1992 Rover 214GSi, evidently in daily use (with faded red paint and most of the lacquer long since peeled off) - sorry for the blurred picture

And what I think is a 1929 Ford Model A roadster customised.

I saw something very similar to the roadster in Fleet services on Friday. I was driving though so I couldn’t grab a photo unfortunately.

Popped into see a good friend of mine in Woodbury the other day who works on VW aircooled stuff. I’ve also worked for him in the past and he’s always got something interesting on the go.

The current project is this 1969 Bay Window which amongst other things he’s replaced the entire roof on.

The Beetle next to it is being used as a parts shed currently. :)

To continue my slight VW van obsession. I saw this rather nice Split Screen van in Hitchin yesterday.

Today, a 1972 Lancia Fulvia, in decent nick. I pulled alongside and expressed my admiration to the woman in the passenger seat (for the car, not her, albeit she was nice too!)

Yesterday on a country lane near me, a very smart Y suffix Bristol. No chance of a picture or even a long look, as I was busy squeezing into the side of the road so he didn't have to brush the hedge on his side.

Possibly heading to the summer fete in the next village, as it was followed by a modern Bentley and a very flashy Range Rover.

I was both impressed and yet dismayed to recently see someone still using a 30 year old Astra as seemingly their everyday motor. It was in a right state. Del Boy Capri state. What's the country come to that this is even viable these days?

In a world where professional drivers have to report even the most minor of dents, and ensure the vehicle is spotlessly clean, lest there be even the tiniest risk to others, and yet this is allowed?

Makes you wonder who is really running the country - insurance companies and scam artists, or politicians and officers of the law.

If you’d got the registration number you could have checked to see what the MOT status of the car was and what work it had needed for the previous MOT’s.

As long as it’s roadworthy and there’s no jagged edges on the bodywork (also an MOT failure) then it doesn’t matter what it looks like.
