Two from this weekend:

1) a 1973 E Type coupe in a horrible metallic light green, M reg so must have been one of the last ones. Still looked magnificent though (if you put sunglassses on).

2) Driving past my house yesterday was what looked like an early 70s Porsche 911, in a deep bottle green, with the reg 911 XJR (presumably the owner also has an XJR with a ‘My other car is a Porsche’ sticker on it). Doing a reg check this appears to have been first registed in 1990, but there’s a story about it…

I was at cafe this morning some distance from home, and parked outside were 3 x 911s: 2 x GT3s and a GT4, all immaculate with carbon brakes and private plates, one of which was 911 RA. I looked for the drivers (they were a fairly obvious demographic!) and spoke to them, had a Porsche owners club gilet on. They were on a road trip to a show somewhere. I mentioned the 911 in #2 above (not often you see 911 plates on a 911, and two in two days was quite a a coincidence). Not only had they just been talking about that exact car, but one of them had been in it two days previosuly! It was a restoration job and had just been sold. Quite the coincidence.

Interesting. I must admit that I do love an early era 911.

I am strongly resisting the mid life crisis urge to go out and buy one just to have it for 6 months.

I say ’resisting’ to make out I have excellent will power, but actually the main method of resistance is the absence of a suitable bank balance.

A nice looking cream coloured Triumph TR4A passed me while I was walking this morning (G suffix plate, 1969ish). It was spluttering a little bit, possibly because it was being driven slowly on a narrow lane, so it sounded like it needed a bit of open road to clear its throat. It left quite a petrol smell behind, which reminded me how that's vanished in the era of catalytic converters and electronic engine management.

There is something about the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons in the morning!

Today I spotted a rare 1973 VW 412 L Variant.
There can't be many of those still around?

.

We had a 1966 1500 Variant, I think, which was replaced about 1971 by the updated design (a 1600 Variant, I think). I have a vague recollection of my father saying that they used to develop a serious rust problem in the front boot, which was why it was replaced a few years later by a Peugeot.

Just seen in Chelmsford, a lovely looking gold Ford Escort mk2 1.6 ghia. It was thumping along Parkway then went into Chelmer Road. It loooked very similar to the one I used to see in Cherry Hinton back in about 1995 -2007

Just seen a trio of Aston Martin V8s on the M23. Two of them had the registrations 4 JRB and 5 JRB. Couldn’t see the third one unfortunately.

There was indeed an optional hard top available for the Triumph Stag. When fitted with a hardtop the soft top neatly stowed beneath its lift-up cover. There's one for sale on a well known auction site right now.

My photo below shows one, next to a Triumph TR6 also with an optional hard top fitted. Photo taken in Ripley (Sainsbury's car park) on a New Year's Run organised by a Derbyshire Triumph enthusiast's group.

I'm thinking it was a Stag with the hard-top now. Looking at pics of the 2000 and Stag, the car i saw definitely had more a Stag side profile. Whatever it was, it looked superb anyway.

When I passed this little beauty just now, I thought it was a Riley Elf. It's actually a Wolseley Hornet; first I've seen.

1984 Mini HL estate. I like the sliding rear windows!
Good to see an Austin Countryman without the "heritage" wood beading.

The sun brought loads of classics out on the country lanes today, (no pictures, sorry) but three highlights:

1981 VW Golf GTi in red looking like new (and no tappet noises from the engine!)
1964 Bentley S3 Continental (saw it twice in an hour)
1968 Ford GT40, going past me full anead both at ’a rate of knots’, emitting a fine blue haze and around 120dB.

Also, not old, but an interesting and nearly old reg plate - FA57 BMW on an M1 (or poss M2, couldn’t see as it went past!)

For all those interested in seeing "older" cars, this Sunday is Drive It Day. A day that the FBHVC encourages Clubs and owners to get their cars out and go for a drive. For example, my club, the Mid Wales Classic Vehicle Club are doing a run starting from Berriew for breakfast, to Dylife for lunch at The Star. Lots of other Clubs will be doing similar.
