Not good trying to cool down the world.
I'm with Ian Warmsley from Modern railways magazine in that the hoppers should be removed to both stop misuse and encourage maintenance to prioritize a/c faults.
K

I'm of the opposite view. I've been on too many units without any opening windows with the air-con packed in.

Unless there are suddenly lots of passengers carrying T-keys now, its surely down to staff education.

The Leeds-Sheffield/Nottingham's interwork however there has been an increase lately in 150s on the route. AFAIK there should be 3 158s out for refurb/PRM mods at a time which will put some pressure on the fleet. Once the Sheffield's extend to Lincoln it will be interesting to see if the route will see a greater mix of 150 and 158 operation
The Nottinghams will be moving to the Wakefield Westgate and Moorthorpe route, and extending to Bradford Interchange. I'd expect this to end the interworking due to them using different sides of Leeds station.
Once "Northern Connect" is launched, use of 150s will presumably end. Nottinghams and Lincolns will be Connect services, so presumably the Sheffield terminators (which as far as I know WILL remain, giving 2 semi-fast tph via Kirkgate and Barnsley) will be too.

Sorry, I meant from May when the Sheffield-Lincoln route is being joined on to the Leeds-Sheffield semi fast.

How many of Northern's 156 fleet is still unrefurbished (still in the old livery)?

Is the reason for 150s appearing on Sheffield-Leeds via Barnsley Express's because of the current shortage of 158s at the moment only I've seen a couple on there recently and also seen a 150 on a Nottingham diagram as well
A couple of weeks ago a 150 got nicked off my Knottingley service to go to Nottingham when a 158 failed. After a delay, we were treated to the luxury of a refurbished 155 in its place. Presumably they did it this way round as Sheffield drivers don't sign 155s?

Well the breeze was nice to have, but not knowing how long the hoppers had been opened for, I couldn't say if it was actually necessary for them to be open, I'd agree that removing the hoppers would encourage effective aircon to be maintained/installed although i've experienced 158s in the past that quickly heat up when sat in the sun beyond the ability of the aircon to keep a decent temperature.

155347 is back and in service. Seen at Leeds about half an hour ago looking very shiny in new livery and refreshed interior with latest version of seat coverings waiting to go to York.

Is 155347 the only one done so far? Had 155342 on Saturday and it was absolutely horrible!

345 & 346 were the first two to go (in reverse order). Not sure if they're even the same as each other and it sounds like 347 is different again!

155341 - 155344 still untouched (though presumably one of those is either due to go to Killie or is already there, if 347 is back).

155345 and 347 are refurbished to the same latest spec. 346 was in the earlier spec.
347 was in service on the Calder valley for at least the last 10 days to two weeks so has been out in service a bit longer than just a couple of days.

155346 was 13 months up at Kilmarnock.
155345 was 7 months
155347 was 4 months so very much getting quicker.

Had 155347 on a busy service to Knaresborough on Friday 24th, which it was working sans 153.View media item 3086
The legroom is still tight as ever! I think the top part of the seat cover will dirty quite easily, being a lighter shade.
Is there some pressure from up on high (DfT maybe?) to avoid reducing the seating capacity of units any more than is absolutely necessary for 2020-compliance?

I ask because the legroom on 155s in particular is universally criticised on here, so to an outsider looking in the sacrifice of 4-8 seats per vehicle seems a "no-brainer"...

Or perhaps the folk of the East Riding have shorter legs on average!

The leg room on 155s is inconsistent between different seats, some have quite reasonable leg room if you know where to look or try out a few different seats if you board a fairly empty train.

If I do board an almost-empty set, I always head straight for a table bay (one of the ones with decent window alignment if possible), and hadn't noticed any difference in legroom in the airline seats- other than the priority seats.

It's all very well refurbishing the interiors of these Northern Units but what about the cabs ???

I've heard that the work was planned and then cancelled!

The cabs are appalling, especially the 150's! The brand new 195's & 331's cabs look very comfortable, but I'm sure my depot will get shafted and still work the old stock far more than the new.

Nothing worse for morale than driving a unit where the seats are more comfy in the passenger saloons than the cabs.

Well this is new...

Nope, been there since they were installed. Tend the be the only thing that scrolls across apart from the final destination on the train.
It is rather amusing on West Midland Trains where a Class 153 can have a false illusion of grandeur when it has `Class 170` scrolling across it.

Never been that on any of the units I've travelled on for the last several months, always just said the destination.

I did actually have a 156 on Saturday (156471 from what I recall) that when I boarded at Askam actually had a proper route code in and announcement going "This is Askam, this is the Northern service to Barrow in Furness..."

Shame it was actually going to Lancaster!

I do remember boarding a 156 at Darlington in December 2015 when the first PRM refurbs came out, and it was doing the full announcements on that journey to Saltburn but alas they were never heard again.

That said: "This train is the Northern service to Saltburn, the next station stop is...Eaglescliffe. This train will shortly be arriving at Eaglesclffe, if you're leaving us here at Eaglescliffe please ensure that you take all of your personal belongings and hand luggage with you. This is Eaglescliffe, this train is the Northern service to Saltburn, the next station stop is...Thornaby." and repeat for every single station was absolute torture so i'm glad they've at least made it more concise.

Agreed granny Jones. The cabs on the refurbished ones are untouched and awful

Yes - About the most they've done is given the Driving desk a bit of a repaint in some of the refurbed 150's - but even then it's still in that awful unsightly ex-LM cream!

I expected better from those ex-FGW 150's we've recently got - turns out they're rubbish, same old crappy drivers chair, same lack of leg room, poor drivers desk still having to lean forwards to touch the controls (Not ergonomic), air con works only in some of them and for how long, heating doesn't work in some of them.

I'd even rather drive a 142 than a 150.

Bring on the 195's & 331's, if my depot is going to sign them then I can't wait. They look as comfy as the cab on a Voyager, they really are designed for the Driver, not for some crappy cost saving space-saving cheap-as-possible scheme like most of the junk we've got now. The sooner the 150's go to booths the better.

The powered door next to the drivers cab on the 150/2s are white with Northern. Does this mean passengers can use them? Arriva Wales are the same with an offset colour and the old first great western, some are blue the same as the body side and some are the pinky-red to match the other doors.

Theory would suggest so, as there are no notices to forbid passengers using them. Though it does seem weird as those single doors are very narrow for passenger use.

Not at all unusual to see passengers board through the end doors and then have to walk through the connecting door into the passenger area. Even when it's quiet and the normal doors are available. I reckon I see it at least twice a week on my commute.
