Of course it is, a career I'm sure all of us would gladly accept. One day Louby, one day.

I've only been trying a yr to be fair, and didn't really put any effort in on my app first time, but I spoke to hr on the Leeds one and they said they pull so many and don't look at the rest so it is down to luck in a way , if they get what they want from the 1st lot the rest is bye bye I'm afraid ! And my notice is a month rigid so I will be pushing it if I do get through

Pay is is a smidge under £18.9k for trainee drivers in the NW region of Northern. However, you do get to follow your instructors rostering once practical handling - which includes sundays. So roughly once a month you'll get an extra £100 on top of your pay from about month 5 onward. It took me 9.5 months to 'pass out' and move onto the 80% pay bracket. Well worth the struggle.

I wouldn't like to say to be honest, I've always enclosed an updated CV with any application I make but I'm unsure if they even get read. Lots of application forms to go through probably keeps them busy enough.
Why do you ask?

Congrats on the interview. Bearing in mind what has been said about the sifting, I am assuming they were inundated with applications on the 27th. I got my confirmation email at 3.07pm. Do you mind me asking what time you got your confirmation. It would be interesting to know whether they are literally working down the list and if so, how far down I may be if I even have a chance that is lol.

Thanks.

Fingers crossed that they are working through them and I may still hear. I managed to get through to the assessment stage for FGW which is in January, but would much prefer to land this and stay in the Northwest. Hopefully I may hear today or tomorrow, If not, back to keeping an eye open, or hoping I can get in with First and transfer back up here in a couple of years with TPE? Who knows.

Im not in the driving grade how ever I do know there are about 6 people leaving/have left so quite a few posts to fill. I know they have brought RD work back to clear the backlog of road learning required. There are also quite a few drivers doing 12 hours too. The previous group of drivers are passing out now so at least that will be some relief!

Hope you get in Martin. Vic is a great place to work :D

If you get rejected keep om trying. I cannot tell you how soul destroying it is to get to Doncaster and balls it up at the final hurdle. Good luck to all who get that far, dont give up!

As one who missed out with Northern in January by only managing a borderline on reactions, and consequently getting passed over by other TOCs all year citing that as the reason ('we appreciate you passed but no anyway'), I'd echo this.

Cos I'm just nipping to the post office to return a contract. Like you said, don't give up.

Is it normal to be trying for a long time for a trainee driver position before you are successful? By successful I suppose I mean that you pass the interviews required etc and are offered a position. I only ask because i'm an impatient so-and-so!

So were you asked to do any test online, or is it definitely straight to interview? If so, have you done the test with other TOC's already? Just wondering whether they are minimising costs by recruiting people who have already passed the tests.

Also, what time did you get you confirmation email fro your application Wall88? Might show a logical progression from Sunday Morning's application to yours and may give us an insight whether we may still be in with a shout or waiting for the thanks but no thanks email. Ta

I got my confirmation email at 14:40 on the 27/11/13. I attended the assessment centre in april but failed on mechanical comprehension. I didnt do an online test this time even though it had been 12 months since i last took it so my guess would be no one will do it this time around

I think you are getting confused. Northern usually do an online test for all applicants. Presumably they do this to whittle down the numbers so it is at a more manageable level for HR to trawl through.

For the Manchester Vic vacancy, as it was only open for 24 hours or so I presume they have left this out?

Hope that clears things up for you.

Did anyone else apply for the Barrow role? Sounds like I am the only one on here, but not heard anything yet :(

Hi all, I'm another one that applied for the Trainee Train Driver at Victoria and haven't heard anything about whether I'm through to the next stage yet. I got my email confirming my application had been received at 2127 on 26 November, which I think is after the ones who have already been invited to an interview? There's still hope...:)

There is no online test for man vic this time, has anyone else been for assessments?

I've had the pleasure of attending the assessments, then realising that trying to set some kind of speed record on the reactions test wasn't such a great idea. The other tests aren't all that bad, although I'm totally unsure about the new tests. To my knowledge Northern haven't used the new assessments yet, unless someone knows differently?

Have you anything back yet Louby?

Northern are definitely using the new tests, as I sat stage 1 a fortnight ago and stage 2 yesterday in Leeds. I believe the tests changed in October but I'm unsure how many groups northern have put through them so far as I'm an external candidate.

No but I rang them this morning, I haven't done any assessments apart from the online one which isn't being used for man vic, I got my confirmation email 2107 on the 27 th ! So well down the line, after a long and very knowledgable chat I now know where I'm going wrong, hence I'm not expecting an invite, but least now I can prepare for round 3 :)

Ah gd luck with your results, what did you make of the new style tests? Any that stand out as being particularly tricky?

Sorry to hear that, but at least it seems you've received some constructive criticism that you can use going forward. Good luck with your future attempts :)

I think as long as you're properly prepared for them and read the practice material sent to you, it would be pretty hard to fail. I passed both stages and nothing seemed particularly tricky but the interview at the end (MMI) is very tough and I'm still awaiting the results from this - should hear next week.

Yes I've heard that said a few times with regards the new interview, seems they have stepped the level up from the previous CBI. Anyway I'm getting way ahead of myself. Best of luck with your results!

It's nice to be told I have all the acquired skills they are looking for, my downfall is not putting them in writing !! Good luck to all who get through and I will be seeing you when I do!! :)

Got an email on the 12th inviting me to interview next week.
I have to give 2 weeks notice to book a day off work so that's going to be difficult, especially at this time of year.
This will be an interesting conversation with my boss.

I've just had my interview confirmed for next Wednesday but no sign of an online assessment as yet. As for giving notices to current jobs. If you got the position would you be really bothered about not getting paid for not handing your notice in? I know I won't be

I would imagine that is the case, the Vic positions were always going to be rushed through due to the imminent start date. So I wouldn't start to worry just yet with regards Barrow.

True but I suppose it would depend on the situation and the company you work for. The notice period is agreed upon when you sign the contract so by failing to honour that notice you have broken the contract. Now I'm sure lots of employers would be understanding and allow people to leave earlier than their notice period. Without good dialogue and your existing companies best wishes could at worst see you in court or with a bad reference. Seeing as most Trainee Train Driver roles at Northern are filled "medical & references pending" a bad reference could suck big time :-/

hello, first post after lurking/gathering info for a while!
only decided to pursue the train driver role fairly recently, and the vacancy at manchester vic probably came a bit too soon if anything - would've ideally liked a bit more time to prepare and research - however, I thought with it being almost as local as can be, and unsure when next ones would be, that it was too good an opportunity to pass up, so applied and have an interview on Tuesday afternoon - can anyone confirm that it is just an interview or will there be tests on the day too?
many thanks in advance for any advice
