My friend who works for Northern tells me that there were four Class 319s on Allerton Depot this morning - 319361/80 in FCC livery and 319362/64 in Northern livery.

When are these due to enter traffic? Still no announcements yet. Bet Northern are itching to get them into use.

I mentioned this in the Manchester-Liverpool Electrification thread a few days ago.

I spoke to a bloke working for Northern who said they are looking at starting electric services on the Liverpool to Manchester Airport route from 8th February.

Im sure it was mentioned elsewhere but they have every single resource going on the main line to get the wires sorted and so Vic, the Wigan line are on the back burner.

I hope to try and be on the first trip, see you there

Fancy that, I'm in Manchester on the 8th! Looking forward to it, should it go ahead then.

How much time is needed to fully change the livery over from FCC to that of Northern Rail?

It's not just the paint that wants doing. They're having a full refresh inside and out, Brand new PIS installed and C6 exams. Plus the 2 in FCC colours are being used 3 days a week on driver training.

Yes Northern are itching to use them. Driver training for top link drivers at Lime Street is broadly complete (aside from some stragglers) and the drivers diagrams changed in Dec to reflect the new 'electric work'. Once the electrification is complete its pretty much ready to go.

The start date can't be the 8 February as the Airport station is still closed for platform 4 works.

More likely to be the 9 February and the first train into the reopened station is the 0435 arrival from Lime Street.

You are probably right, but it was just that I heard it off a bloke working for Northern.

The 0338 and I'm lead to believe 1816 services from Liverpool to MIA and matching return workings will still be DMUs due to the work falling on lower link drivers. Couldn't have top link men getting up that early.

A paint is normally done during the C6 works, which for a 319 take 20 business days per unit. The PRM-TSI works for universal toilet, seat back handles, audio etc take an additional 10 days.

IIRC the 03:38 runs non-stop between Liverpool and Manchester and if Chat Moss is closed for overnight engineering works then it runs via Warrington Central instead, so probably easier to leave it booked as a Sprinter than to have to alternative diagrams if the service runs via Warrington Central.

According to RTT its not booked to use the Chat Moss route anyway.

Based on the various posts on this and other forums the earliest we are likely to see an electric service is 9 February on the reopening of the Airport Station.

I think it has been said that 3 units are required to operate the service from Lime Street to the Airport. There are currently two refreshed units at Allerton and a third ought to be making its way there soon. When services do start do we think it will be all electric?

That is because of the night-time possessions of the Chat Moss route for electrification work, which have been going on for 3 years now.
Hopefully once the power is on in a few weeks that will mark the end of repeated possessions on that route.
The dislocation will transfer to the Bolton route instead. ;)
Work on Castlefield Viaduct for the Ordsall Curve will knacker both Chat Moss and Bolton routes of course.

Currently if the train doesn't run via Warrington its a bus and with no other alterative route used.

You could argue it could be electric with first route via Chat Moss with second route via Crewe (reverse) but of course it would serve Manchester Stations in the wrong order.

Tuesday 6th January
5Z19 Allerton to Wolverton
5Z20 Wolverton to Allerton

I'd expect 5Z19 to be 319380, as it was previously scheduled to move to Wolverton but cancelled 5Z19 should be 319361 and 5Z20 should be 319365 if the moves go ahead.

Furthermore, if anyone wants photos these are scheduled for morning/afternoon unlike the last two moves done in the middle of the night, 5Z20 due to leave at 15:33.

Standard disclaimer applies with regards to whether it will run or not.

------------

Edited to correct the post with respect to 5Z19 to be 361 and not 380, thanks to information from others.

I've heard that the Huyton to Wigan line is about a month behind Wavetree to Earlestown.

I heard that the number of 319s Northern will receive has gone up from14 to 20. Is this true?

TPE are now going to sublease some of Northern's 156s: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=110490

An option under consideration is splitting some or all Liverpool-Blackpool services at Preston from September so that Northern can free up some DMUs for their own benefit. If that goes ahead Northern will need more 319s than originally envisaged.

Thanks for replying. It makes sense that Northern Rail could use and need more EMUs splitting the route. But has the DfT offered the required 319s? I cant seem to find confirmation of that.

There are 3 ready for traffic as discussed. However one has to be left spare in case a rescue is needed. So that's only 2 in service per day. However another is due up from Wolverton ready this week.

There should have been 2 x 319s in daily service on the Liverpool-Man Airport runs from last month but the electrification wasn't completed on time. One of the freed up units should have been used to extend Todmorden services to Blackburn but the signalling on the chord wasn't completed on time either!
