I think it would originally have been Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Exchange as it was the L&YR route. Manchester Exchange was LNWR and it's Liverpool trains went to Lime Street.
The route from Hindley to Liverpool was part of the route taken by the Liverpool and Bury Railway in 1845. In 1846, that railway merged with the Manchester and Leeds Railway and this was then one of the companies that amalgamated to form the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
