Would it be crazy to wonder whether they're trying to have a conductor on each set of doubled up services?!

Got rejected for the Driver role at Leeds, although I'm not that dissapointed in all honesty.

I didn't have to do a DSI for the Travel Advisor role at Bradford Interchange because I've done one already(it reached the required standard so any customer facing roles I apply for, I don't need to do a DSI)

It's also about the 4th time this year they have been looking for Drivers in Manchester, so they clearly are going.
Man Picc is one of the more unpopular Northern depots so maybe Drivers are transferring to 'other' depots causing vacancies to appear at Picc which in turn are getting filled mainly by Conductors.

Ooo, my status has changed from 'New Submitted Application' to 'Online Testing Complete' - I've previously done a DSI :)

Good morning all. This is my first post having stumbled across the forum over the past few days. I applied for a job as trainee train driver Sheffield and received an email yesterday inviting me to interview on Thursday 24th. Just wondering if anyone else lurking on here has received the same?

Good luck with your respective applications. Cheers!

Thanks! You too. Have you applied for Sheffield as well as Leeds then? Wonder how many have been shortlisted. Hope to see you next week.

Looking for some advice really

Just noticed that the role of Station Operative at Rotherham is on the Northern site.

How should I go about my application not done northern before, also unsure if I should state my disabilty with my poor eye sight.

Any advice would be very helpful thanks.

No point trying to hide it as it would be discovered at your pre-employment medical.

@SuperOwl86 Added to which an employer is required to make reasonable adjustments. However, not sure if the requirements of ROGS would supercede that... due to safety critical work...

No you are completly wrong about Man Picc. Its the best depot and they expecct the best from any applicants. Drivers are not leaving the depot its because they have increased the number of drivers at the depot. They have been interviewing all week for 8 to start in January 2012

Doesn't help with F-K Transpennine stealing drivers and guards.

Reassuring to know many of those who went over who now want to go back!!

Correct, safety critical jobs are DDA exempt. You have to meet the medical criteria for the job.

I would suggest that the op contacts Northern hr, and finds out what the eyesight requirements are. Saves wasting everyone's time. Including your own.

Hi everyone, I am asking a question for a friend, he has applied for the trainee train driver role with Northern Rail at Manchester Piccadilly.

He passed an interview with them and was told that because he had a valid pass he wouldn't have to do the assessments and they would contact him. I've told him not to worry and that they will contact him, but he made a good point. The start date is January the 9th and he would need to give his notice on the 9th December. Does anyone have any information that I could give to my friend?

I am worried for him as I think he will lose out on this role if things don't pick up quickly.

Picc is an excellent depot, don't knock it until you have been there. Have you ever thought its because our drivers and guards are of a very high standard and that is why they get jobs with ftpe reasonably easily!

It's not my opinion of it, its just an observation from what I've heard others say. Heard them saying they've got the worst route (e.g. Hadfield), worst shift times and awkward car parking facilities (a carpark a 15 minute walk from the station was mentioned??)

They can end up with a surplus of applicants who have passed all stages and then they have to pick the ones with the highest score at Line Manager Interview to chose who gets the job and who ends up with nothing. That is how their system works. What is taking so long is probably that they still have other applicants going through the process.

Every depot has 1 bad route, Picc's is Hadfield, The Car Park is less than 5 mins walk away and as a new guard the earliest start is 04.11 am and The latest finish is 02.10 am which is Pass from Chester on empties, we do not have nights like some depots and we have a very good variety of work and units

Why is Hadfield seen as such a bad route?

A couple of reasons, some of the Areas we go through have more than their fair share of Problem passengers! Gorton, Hattersley, and then the Triangle where we have to change ends 3 times in 20 minutes, the line has got better over the last few years but we have more trouble on that line then any other.

I wouldn't have thought that this route would be trouble. I went to Glossop and back on Saturday and it seemed quite civil and quiet.
What kind of trouble is there? Is it people not wanting to pay and trying to get away with it?

I noticed on Saturday that I didn't get my ticket checked on the out or return journey from piccadilly. I was quite surprised by this.

Is the other complaint about Hadfield route being rather boring/monotonous? Heard drivers say that enough times

Trust me its our Hell route, so much hassle, it has so many things against it, stops every 2 minutes, so many trouble causers, Fare Dodgers, the triangle, the list is endless, I feel sorry for the drivers they usually have to do 3 on the bounce (us guards got rid of the 3 in a row years ago).
