From an earlier thread, isn't it just circle = "check railcard held" and diamond = "check it's really a child".

Or something like that. Has anyone seen any different symbols? Perhaps they could just print 'Railcard' or 'Child' in the same place, unless it really is a cunning plan to catch out some types of fare evasion...

As far as I've been told (and have seen), only the circle and diamond exist. However ... if you buy a ticket for which both a Child and a Railcard concession applies, both symbols will be printed! I've attached an example from Irlam, kindly bought by one of my north of England-based fellow ticket enthusiasts. This example is a Child travelling with a Disabled Railcard - the equivalent of the old status code "CHDSB". Other examples for which both symbols would appear would include CHFAM, CHRCD and CHNSE.

That ticket shouldn't exist. it is no cheaper than the child discounted ticket that any child could travel on. Disabled Railcards don't offer chlld discounts.

I believe that some TISes have a bug where if the clerk attempts to issue for the same journey a DSB discounted ticket and a child ticket, the child one will print as a CHDSB. This costs the same but tends to confuse conductors

It occurs to me that it is appropriate, because the child may be the railcard holder, rather than an adult. In this case the non-existant discount needs to be indicated to make it clear who would hold the railcard for the accompanying adult to have the discount.

I don't see why it's needed for that, unless there are people claiming two adult discounts on a child's Railcard (when the child's disability is not obvious)....

My friend bought his ticket from the machine at Ben Rhydding today and it came in a very strange format. Are there no rules about following the standard format?!?

They couls do with having had some sort of passenger information as the trial started.

I was quite surprised the first time I got one from Steeton and Silsden - and I knew about the new ticket format.

I suspect a few passengers could be quite worried - and several of the machines are at unstaffed station.

Nice to see it's still printing text over the orange section. Makes me wonder why the new ticket design didn't have a slightly thinner orange band top and bottom - or they couldn't have moved the text down a few pixels? Heck, ideally the software could have centred things vertically so there wasn't such a huge gap on some tickets.

I mean, when Google moved two characters by just one pixel it made the news globally!

It's definitely a much nicer design (and I'm a huge fan of them printing advice about restriction codes on the tickets, perhaps this could sort out FGW's claim of blanket restrictions out of Paddington etc?) but I agree that it could confuse passengers - I haven't seen one of these in person yet and I'm going to be really thrown when I get my first few!

Surely any machine issuing the new style tickets will have some sort of notice on it to warn people that they might get something they're not familiar with?

Likewise, posters on walls and possibly even leaflets to take away?

Nothing at Steeton and Silsden. Just the usual machine with unusual tickets. Haven't seen anything about the new tickets anywhere but on here.

That's bad.

Sure, they're pretty self explanatory but the current tickets have been around since the 1980s? There will be a lot of people who may be rather put out by a sudden change. Some people don't like change, and it's a little more important with something like this than when Facebook changes its look and people whinge.

Nothing, anywhere that I have seen, and I have visited a fair old number of these stations since the launch.

Northern did put some posters up about the new TIS in their ticket offices though.

PMSL, not likely, this is the railway you are talking about. I don't even get engineering notices to put out these days, nevermind anything that might seem sensible.

When it comes to engineering, it does seem that a lot of places on the railway just tell users to check the website.

I guess it's safe to say that most people have Internet access these days, many when on the move, but by no means all.

Putting lots of info on a single ticket is great but not for those with a visual disability or sight problem who would struggle reading the smaller text, such as the seat reservation details. I hope the designers have given this consideration.

Any idea when this is likely to be rolled out nationwide, at TOD machines and ticket offices?

I picked up quite a few tickets today from Salford Crescent and I have to say, it seems this new design has been rolled out purely to lower Northern's bill with Lexmark for the ink.

I could fit a whole town in the middle of that ticket.

Perhaps - but I don't think people worrying about whether their ticket is valid because its like no other ticket they've had in 20 years is a problem that should be ignored because there are worse problems in the world.

Fascinating results today.
FGW guard number 1 looked at the ticket and said it was a receipt. Then it sunk in and he said he had never seen or heard of such tickets before, but stamped it and handed it back anyway.
FGW guard 2 was very shocked. He did know of the ticket redesign and recalled the brief about them being trialled 'somewhere up North' which he implied had been quite some time ago. He said he never thought he would see one. He checked my return portion too and commented it was good that there was a neat little space in which to stamp, so the usual inky mess had the potential to come out legible rather than stuck on top of the ticket's own printing. He also commented the writing could be made a bit bigger or more spaced out.

Next was SWT guard 1 who was lovely and expressed interest in my tickets and really liked the fact they had the reserved train printed on them which he thought would help his passengers and 'save us both a lot of aggro when people lose or 'loose' the reservation or ticket'.
He didn't seem to have heard that a redesign was taking place, but this didn't dampen his enthusiasm. I mentioned Northern and he said "Well if THEY can do it then we definitely can!" Which I thought rather telling!

SWT guard 2 was clearly aware of the redesign and seemed almost to have taken ownership of it . He clearly thought I'd gotten it from a SWT Machine. He was nonplussed by the mention of the Northern trial. Suggests that Parkeon's products for SWT may be reconfigured now / coming soon? Dunno!

Finally Virgin RPI intially recated with "Whoaaa now" sor of thing, but then clicked and thanked me. The VT guard and I had a brief chat about the new design because whe whwn I passed My tickets her initial comment was "Ooh, now what do you think of these new tickets?" Her main thought was that the fewer coupons passengers were required to carry and organise the better, less important the design, as this would benefit both them (less likely to lose) and her (quick to check, less likely to be errors).

To all the staff who chatted to me about it we all kind of agreed that they are an improvement but need a bit more development in that overlapping writing should never appear, and having them print a bit bigger might be preferable. I think it just goes to show how many aspects to this there are to be considered!

I'd like to thank everyone I spoke to, who gave me an interesting discussion, even though you'll never read this :)
