Out of interest (going off at a tangent), what share of the Wigan services are Pacer run these days?

The Southport - Airport runs generally aren't, but what about the others?

I dont have access to the assignments but from an observers point of view about 70-75% pacers, 25-30% sprinters.
I think their may also be two morning only services from North Western (7:20 and 8:20) not used them to know what they are.

All I have found with regards to Pacer Replacement on searching the internet is the following from Wikipedia and many other places:

Most Pacers are now almost 25 years old. Various train operating companies have investigated ways of trying to replace the Pacer, although little progress has yet been made. Arriva Trains Wales have acquired Class 150 Sprinters from other operators to reduce their dependency on Pacers for Valley Lines services.[5] Northern rail had planned to replace a number of Pacers with cascaded Sprinters, however due to rising passenger numbers the Pacers will remain in operation alongside the Sprinters.

Erm..... right so after 5 pages were no nearer to finding out if this pacer business is true is true or a bluff? Ok heres my 2 pence, whilst the pacers may have seemed a good idea when they were built, they were awful then, in both asthetics and comfort, they are awful now, and no amount of fettleing will make tham less awful. Though with no evidence that this project has even been considered im going to side with the guys who think its a load of balls. BUT!! If any evidence to the contrary comes to light i reserve the right to change sides and poke fun at the doubters.

I think that there is a better chance that the government coughs up the money to replace pacers with Class 172 trains, than rebuilds the pacers and curently that is not likely either!

In a perfect world we would electrify the busiest lines and build ONLY new Electric trains (not necessarily units), then cascade the displaced Diesel trains to beef up the lesser routes, and hopefully cascade the Pacers into store where they could come out for emergencies/growth/summer-reliefs etc.

But I suspect that the rental and fuel costs of a pacer make them too attractive to the decision makers who do not travel on them (probably have not even seen one).

And in the privatised world (which I hoped would remove government interference) no-one makes best use of the resources available. Thats why the new (electric) Pendolinos are going into store and at the other end of the cascade pacers stay in traffic.
