I travelled on the ill-feted 70000 Britannia hauled 'Cumbrian Mountaineer' yesterday Wednesday 8th April and all the subsequent failures that occurred

I was just heading to end of Platform in the morning and Britannia arrived very early, so i was unable to get a decent photo of her arriving
so i walked up to the other end of platform hoping for a decent photo only to find a overhead mast right alingside 70000 Britannia, Oh well i should be able to get some decent photos at Carlisle, little did i know what was going to happen later!!

Some very high speed running especially around Morecambe Sth Jct & Carnforth, (i won't mention the speed), then approaching Oxenholme things started to go wrong, we were approaching a stop signal, which was unusual, we found out the footplate crew had requested a stop to check out some banging noises, 70000 went into the loop and was taken off and removed into the engineers siding for inspection, where we heard that it was a failed big end, photos show the support crew inspecting the loco.

and then removing the connecting rods.

37409 was summoned from Carlisle to take over the tour and we finally arrived at Carlisle well over an hour late.

I decided i wasn't going to bother with the return trip back to Crewe behind 37409 i went home via the S&C to Leeds, then on to Huddersfield, which in retrospect was a good idea as 37409 itself failed at Tebay, luckily 2 class 20's sent to rescue 70000 at Oxenholme were able to get to Tebay to collect broken 37409 and train, with a 1 hour late arrival back at Crewe. (Has there ever been a tour where the rescue loco also failed and had to be rescued?)

I went over early to the ELR today for the first day of the Legends of steam gala
To enable me to get photos of 60163 Tornado on the goods train and 34070 Manston & 34092 City of Wells double heading the first passenger train of the gala, to do this i went to Bury as normal Train & Tram, then got a bus to Ramsbottom
60163 Tornado with the goods train & Brake Van rides

34070 Manston & 34092 City of Wells double heading the first passenger service of the gala 09.30 Bury to Rawtenstall at Ramsbottom

While the 2 Bulleids were in P1 60163 returned with the goods train, so i was able to get all 3 pacifics in the same photo (Just)

34092 City of Wells & 34070 Manston double heading the first passenger service of the gala 09.30 Bury to Rawtenstall leave Ramsbottom for Rawtenstall

Back at Bury 600163 Tornado arrives from Heywood with its first passenger run of the gala

I did a couple of trips to Heywood behind each of the Bulleid Light Pacifics
34070 Manston
34092 City of Wells

Also taking part in the gala was the railways own LYR Tank 11456

Lastly i did a Bury-Rawtenstall-Bury round trip behind Tornado, unfortunately at Rawtenstall the sun was directly into the camera

Second day of the ELR Legends if Steam gala, my plan was to just spend a few hours at Ramsbottom, photographing all 4 locos there, sadly the time table slipped so City of Well's run was cancelled, so i caught the bus back to Bury in time to get some photos there.

Taken at Ramsbottom Bury were
34070 Manston
60163 Tornado
11456

At Bury was
34092 City of Wells
60163 Tornado
11456

Final day of the ELR Legends of Steam gala ON Sunday 12th April 2026, I arrived at Bury station during a heavy downpour which later turned into a hailstorm!!
I had noticed that there was a changeover from Manston to City of Wells due to take place on P3 at Bury, but as has happened a few times this Gala the platform was changed to P2
No worries just slightly different views than i anticipated
You can see the rain belting it down in this photo of 34070 Manston
34092 City of Wells came off its service from Rawtenstall
34070 Manston meanwhile was waiting on the curve out of the station, and i was able to get photos of them both, not the best time for the photo as the drain cocks were open on Manston

60163 Tornado arrived about 10 minutes later to a blue sky, weather changed that quickly on Sunday morning

Of my 3 round trips to Rawtenstall on Sunday the 1st was behind Tornado

I travelled back to Ramsbottom to get on Manston service to Rawtenstall.
34070 Manston arriving at Ramsbottom passing 11456
2nd round trip behind 34070 Manston
3rd round trip behind 34092 City of Wells

A great 3 day Gala put on by the ELR, many thanks for 2 great days travel & 1 day photography

I finally arrived at the SVR steam gala 3 hours later than I should have arrived due to the wires down at Manchester Piccadilly so in total took 6 hours from Huddersfield to Kidderminster!!!, which included a journey back to Huddersfield onto Leeds to get train there, which was cancelled due to trespassers in the NE, anyway enough of my woes here are a few phone photos taken this evening/night at Bridgnorth, Arley and Bewdley

After an overnight stay at the Great Western Guesthouse in Bewdley Friday night, for Saturday i decided to spend about 4 hours at Highley
Starting off at Bewdley with the early morning prepping of Judy & the Pug to work with 1450 to Kidderminster.
I then moved to Highley behind the Stanier mogul and 2 shuttle coaches.
Seen in order they appeared at Highley were :-

4930 Hagley Hall appeared somewhat strangely with no passengers and not in the timetable with 4 GWR coaches which it took into the loop and ran round and later departed back South.
At this time i didn'y know about 1450's problem

7802 Bradley Manor was next running tender first

Then 4930 Hagley Hall departed back south

D8568 gave us quite a shock when we were expecting a steam locomotive!!! Standing in for failed 1450 which has a broken spring

Next up was 71000 Duke of Gloucester heading back to Kidderminster

75069 was next heading to Bridgnorth

Then D8568 heading back south

13268 was next with a Bridgnorth to Kidderminster service

7714 with the LNER teak set approaches Highley was next and my last loco photographed at Highley
before i made the trip back to Kidderminster behind 7802 Bradley Manor and then a 4 hour journey home

Seen at Kidderminster was the withdrawn 1450 and you can see the problem in the photo

Due to the time of day 4pm the sun was directly in front of me!!

and a few TPE 185's & 802's

Collection of photos of the last leg of GBXVIII tour from York to London Euston with 34028 Eddystone York on Saturday 25th April 2026

Also scheduled through York was the Blue Highland Pullman, but power car 43059 Loch Shiel failed at Colton Jct, it eventually limped into York station
It eventually departed back south behind the rear power car 43058 Loch Eil for turning at Gascoigne wood so that 43058 was now leading (it later passed back through York 4 hours late but eventually reached Inverness just 39 minutes late!!)

I went down to Doncaster this morning to see the 2 Class 99's going up to Boness, but a mixture of ill luck i was on the wrong platform when they came through early

also seen
56049 Robin of Templecombe (was supposed to have left earlier in the morning for SVR Diesel Gala but no driver)

To be blunt i was just on the wrong platform as everything was going into platforms that were not originally designated for them

66124 & 66007 at Doncaster station heading to Belmont yard from Knottingley
66780 The Cemex Express with a container service passes 66847 Terry Baker stabled at Doncaster

I went to the SVR Diesel gala today, just as a photo day, spent on the foot bridge all day, i have day rovers for the weekend, weather was all over the place
Just look at D9009 Alycidon departing in the mother of all Hailstorms
and it got worse after this!!

But earlier we had lovely sunshine

Visiting locos were

56049 Robin of Templecombe was sadly only on display as no Colas driver

Lots of locos together taken from the footbridge

D9551 & D8568 formed a double header from Bridgnorth
&
D9551 & 33108 also worked double headed
