Some train drivers (I think you know which TOC I'm on about) can earn £60,000 upwards with a lot of overtime and Sundays!

Both are too high IMHO

People will receive wages commensurate with the value of the work they do. That's life.

Not true i think police and nurses deserve a lot more than bankers :)

But yes unfortunately that is the way it is. £60K that is a lot more than i thought it almost made me want to give up on civil engineering altogether!

And after much complaint, the government will no doubt have to launch a report into the money earned for compiling the report and so on and so forth.

Only in this country........ <(

£218,215 though, for telling most what they knew already and trying to insult as many as possible in the process. Ridiculous.

For choosing to work their rest days and sacrificing their free time to make that money. It isn't their basic. And no it isn't too high IMO, other people are underpaid.

Too high in your eyes but if you was a train driver I bet you wouldn't take a voluntary cut in you wages to pay the underpaid workers, they may earn 60k but pay a huge amount in tax and NI to fund others - too much in my book!

Oh yes - that would be Eurostar! (Although I can guess which TOC you're thinking of! ;))

XC pay (almost) as much as VT, as do East Coast, so you can't put all the blame on Virgin!

Doctors get paid £100k+! Being a train driver is also a very responsible job that involves a lot of training. £60k (which would involve plenty of overtime) may be slightly high, but giving train drivers a pay freeze for a few years would be far better than giving them a pay cut.

How have we reached the conclusion that £60k is too high? What are we comparing it with?

Isn't it illegal to work on rest days, as it is "compulsory" to "rest" on those days?

I think your figures are a bit out of date there

Can someone point me to where these £60k basic wage train driving jobs are please? Because the last time I checked at my local depot the basic was somewhere between £35 and £38k. Just so as I know where to put my next application in for a train drivers job.

consider how often a train driver is supposed to hit someone (once every 10 years no average) i think drivers deserve good pay.

Why would it be illegal to work a rest day? It happens all the time.

Because I thought train drivers were supposed to "rest" on rest days, so that they wouldn't be tired when performing their duties.

I meant TOCs sorry

Let me guess... XC pay far less than VT? Is that correct? ;)

Rest days aren't compulsory in the UK (they are in Ireland and some other European countries).

Ooo I didn't know that!

Its interesting, Mcnulty compared our fractured system of Privatization, to much cheaper to run (and arguably better quality) European systems. All of which where state owned and unified. Yet he doesnt recommend changing the system, merely swapping guards for RPI's.

Maybe he got a penalty fare sometime?

Can I just point out that McNulty chaired the first meeting in Dec 2009, so he was working on the review for 18 months, there was also a huge amount of travel involved both in the UK and around europe to compare systems. This works out as an actual wage of 120-130k per year. In his previous job he was also paid 100k over 15 months to run the Londondery urban regeneration company ILEX, was paid 90k per year as head of the Civil Aviation administration and before that he was the boss of Bombardiers aircraft division!

As if that's chicken feed?! So, he's been paid all that money to write a load of twaddle that a GCSE student could tell you doesn't add up. Funny isn't it - nobody ever mentions how much money is wasted on consultancy by the transport industry. Obscene amounts of money given to University graduates with no actual operational railway experience to offer their sometimes flawed opinion on what the company should be doing. Why in the name of sanity do we stand for this nonsense? It's our money after all....
