Some train drivers (I think you know which TOC I'm on about) can earn £60,000 upwards with a lot of overtime and Sundays!

Both are too high IMHO

I'd be interested to know why you think it's too high and which TOC you're referring to.... with any job, you take out what you put in, if I'm prepared to do the overtime why should it bother you what I receive for it?

For the responcibility we take on I think we're remunarated very fairly, although obviously it's not consistent across the board. A wizz kid with a lap top could earn more setting up a dot-com business within the first year or two, but if it went belly up wouldn't have that much responcibilty to bear, whereas if I, XCDriver, Driver9000 etc made a horrendous error, we could easily find ourselves with a manslaughter charge hanging over our heads.

I've highlighted the part which seems to have gone over a few people's heads.

Presumably good old Roy travelled a fair bit, and wasn't always slumming it in "Standard" Class or booking his tickets a month in advance...

I bet I could rack up tens of thousands of "expenses" quite easily if I was doing that

(of course, if McNulty had any "Priv" arrangements then the true cost wouldn't be counted)

none of this post has anything to do with how much and of us in the rail industry are paid.

My point is the guy that wants to skin you alive is being paid far more than you ever thought of.

Not sure why people are side tracking the thread to what each toc or grade is being paid.

Forget the pay and protect your job.

If some of that £200k or so included First Class Anytime tickets, then I suppose it could be considered a benefit since he (or more specifically, the government) is giving money to TOC's - part of which in turn goes to staff!

Before or after August...Judging by the ballot outcome...
I think some Enthusiasts get it in there head that because the WCML or ECML are Big Trains and Big Speeds its more money.. Maybe under mileage payments in BR days. But thats against DOO.
Nowadays the gaps are all over the place. East Coast have Sundays inside the working week. Although XC have committed Sundays its still extra pay.

I wonder how many times McNumpty has had to report for duty at 3:30 a.m. to earn his £218,215. Or how many times he's had to deal with drunken yobs on a late night train, or how many dead bodies he's had to scrape off the track, or when he last had to do a PTS or safety critical examination.

And he has the gall to say drivers are overpaid ?

Ah, good old jealousy. a) Could any of the correspondents here have done the McNulty job? The answer is "probably not", certainly with a strong dose of "no idea, because I have no idea what the job actually entailed". b) How much less money could have been paid to secure the services at a similar level? The answer is "probably not much" with a strong dose of "I have no real idea what the market rate for these jobs is". We would all like more money, and we all have our personal views on whether job x is worth better pay than job y. But they are just that - personal views.

Well to be fair some of us (not me) probably could because lets face it he didnt say an awful lot. And mayeb thats why people cant understand why he got paid so much for a bit of a half arsed job.
