It can if the senior management is under pressure to focus on a health and safety issue.
But the 4G and 5G is being done as a private concession, I can't see how that can impact it unless they don't give access to the track.

I suspect something has went horribly wrong with this project at this point.

They will really be suffering:

a) i suspect complexity is much worse than they expected
b) this will be driving costs up
c) interest rates have skyrocketed
d) they probably only get paid per GB or something of the MNOs that are live on it

this means they will not be getting the projected revenue to cover their debt.

If it's like the rest of the network coverage rollouts, there are a number of factors and some might be impacting the work with TfL, the coverage on the BML, and other projects that include shopping centres, airports and the like - much of which is new equipment to replace ageing kit at places that already had coverage but wasn't keeping up with modern demand (recently I believe Victoria station has got new kit, Manchester Airport and more).

Things like companies buying out others that own the masts and land, negotiations on the future of network collaboration/sharing contracts with the merger of Virgin/O2, and the possible merger of Three and Vodafone (the former being part of an association with EE, the latter with O2), the ongoing timelines to remove Huawei kit, interoperability issues with Ericsson and Nokia equipment, delays to the launch of 5G SA, the switch off of 3G and the impact of that, a lack of qualified staff in the industry, issues getting access to sites to do upgrades because landlords want to be paid huge sums of money for access if it's not just routine maintenance.. need I go on? I have probably forgotten a few things.

In the grand scheme of things, most passengers don't know about the rollout schedule for phone coverage in London or care that much if some of them are delayed.

The cyber attack probably hasn't helped either, given TfL made the (sensible) decision to freeze out and reset access to most of the computer systems.

I don't get the concern about 5G when there's enough capacity to give speeds of up to 500 megabits on 4G. 5G bands will come and some 4G bands will be switched or they'll use DSS that shares spectrum for both. That's likely just a software update at this point.

By design the service is perfectly fine and you can absolutely stream live right now if you so desire.

I think in this context, the terms 4G and 5G are being used interchangeably to simply mean "phone signal" - which is very much lacking on most of the below-ground sections of the Underground network!

Well, that's going to be quite confusing and misleading if so. People can by all means talk about phone coverage, which is what people want, but when people talk of not having 5G, it reads as if this is a dealbreaker and the service is unusable.

Given the environment these networks are working in, there's plenty of capacity using either type. For what it's worth, 5G shows on most phones even though it won't connect to a 5G band, suggesting it's just waiting to be enabled. There's a flag restricting access for now.

And yet, TfL and the Mayor are still convinced that both 4G and 5G is on track to be rolled out to 80% of the network by the end of 2024 according to this poster which is popping up now on platforms and in stations. I'm not convinced myself....

I had a chuckle to myself when I saw that poster appear in the last few weeks. Note the poster says 80% of STATIONS, a cynic would suggest that Khan has already got a head start on that by virtue of the fact that some ~55% of stations already have phone signal by virtue of the fact they are above ground.

Indeed most of the Tube being 'overground' helps quite a bit!

I can already see 5G underground but can't connect to any bands (or use 5G standalone) but it should just be a simple software switch at this point.

Not that you need worry about 5G so much when they have a high capacity 4G service already. Obviously you want it eventually to add more capacity but I don't think there's any significant load yet.

Yes that figure needs questioning. Does existing signal coverage on the existing subsurface lines count too? - this signal is coincidental rather than there being any specific assets installed to provide it.

Hi all,
Has anyone on EE had no service on the jubilee line extension recently? Was working fine for me until a couple of weeks ago - now I'm getting nothing. Others on the tube seem to be connecting fine though.

I'm on Lebara (Vodafone), and I have seem to have issues at Westminster / Waterloo recently. No signal at Westminster and the tunnel between Westminster and Waterloo. When I was on Smarty (Three), I had no signal on the entire JLE.

Didn't work on EE when I used the line a few weeks ago, but Vodafone UK worked.

On the Victoria line I get the opposite where EE works and Vodafone UK doesn't

Latest edit to the TfL page has removed the 80% coverage by year-end commitment

Amusingly the poster campaign has attracted media attention for reasons other than the 80% claim

Are they still living in the 90s? It's pretty normal to be using a smartphone today. If you whip out a Nokia 3310, people are going to find you... not normal...

On the assumption that you aren't under 16 years old, maybe you just haven't noticed the issues in the serious conversation about the damage uncontrolled smartphone acces is doing to children.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before (I couldnt see anything), but travelling Eastbound as a passenger last night from Liverpool Street to Abbey Wood, I appeared the have 4G reception on the secrion between Liverpool Street and Custom House. There was a very brief drop for about 10 seconds after leaving Liverpool Street, but the signal picked up again after Stepney Green junction. This is with id Mobile (3).

I was unable to check the section between Stepney Green and Pudding Mill Lane later as I was actually driving the train (well - sort of!) but it can't be much longer. (You'd hope!)

Not having 4g on the 90 seconds between Oxford Circus and Bond Street is not going to stop a 15 year old girl using social media lol

You've missed the point of the post LOL!
The comment is part of the discussion about the poster normalising smartscreen browsing as part of the TfL rollout. Those posters are visible to any children on the system - even if theyy are with their parents who might be trying to opvercome the issues with under-age excessive smartphone use.

Adults are just as much at risk these days, perhaps more so. I am not sure that an advert showing someone looking at a phone (of any age) will make an existing issue any worse or make any difference at all.

The issue of smartphone (and in particular social media) addiction are beyond the remit of TfL to solve.

I agree, but I was commenting on @DC1989 's post missing the point. It is however possible that posters such as shown, really don't help attempts to address the issue.

Not directed at you AM9 - as I do agree smartphone/social media usage is a problem and is I believe the main reason for young adult and teenage depression. BUT have we really become such a nanny state country that we can't show a poster of someone looking at their phone. TFL already have this crazy rule of no fast food advertising allowed leading to stupid things like having a comedian needing to change a picture of a hot dog with a cucumber

Most airlines are starting to install starlink on their planes for free wifi for all flights. Someone should tell them to think of the children

On the fast food thing, I am guessing that the waste from those eating junk food on the tube is worse than that left behind by those consuming healthy alternatives. Thus TfL who has to clear up passengers' detritis would see that as a way to reduce the problem both for themselves and all passengers.

Quick update. 4g now seems live between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Jct. So I think the Elizabeth Line is totally covered.

From the latest TfL board papers:
We now have coverage in 36 per cent of stations and 28 per cent of underground tunnel sections. We will complete the full coverage of stations and tunnel sections on the Elizabeth line by the end of November. We will also be starting coverage on the Bakerloo line and the southern end of the Northern line by the end of the year, as well as further tunnel sections in Zone 1.

If 45% of the Underground is below ground, surely 36% of stations is too low if you include all stations? Then presumably the "28% of underground tunnel stations" equates to 28% of that 45%?
