Define recovery time ? It should only have time added into the schedule if a) there is something in front of it and the sleeper is on a sub-standard headway, therefore it will be padded out to keep that headway (which should be doubtful considering the time of night) or b) engineering recovery time which is fixed in the schedule regardless of whether work has occured and a TSR is set up after it.

The only recovery time anything up that way should have Northbound is 1 minute approaching Tebay and 2 approaching Carlisle unless weave movements occur.

In this case, recovery time = response from member of staff when I remembered to ask what the recovery time was (although we were talking about a Pendolino rather than the sleeper, which perhaps I didn't make clear (specifically the 1830 Euston departure)).

I would assume they meant time that would be (time journey timetabled for) - (time expected to be taken for journey) but that's only an assumption on my part.

That's Virgins conundrum to answer then, if they can beat the timings they are given then they should be pushing to reduce them as a single minute off a journey time is a considerable earner for them.

Maybe all these people that put threads up moaning about everybody elses jobs would like to post what jobs THEY do so we can all have a go at them.

Next they will be moaning about the Condem government and all the savage cuts to the transport budget, but then they will realise the folly of there action by realising they probably voted them in and were doing the same when labour was in power. :roll:

I do think that the moaning about all things railway should come under the 'What makes you proud to be British' thread................

But as end users, why shouldn't people criticise and complain on the way the railway does things?

Fine, there are those that can rebuke or give an insight as to the "whys" of how things are decided, but nevertheless this is a rail forum where these kinds of subjects can be discussed.

There are roads and road safety related websites where people discuss similar things and those of us in the industry put forth our reasonings. Do we take it as an affront or a criticism or get all defensive and brand the site a moaners paradise? Not usually.

Those who are not in the industry are usually the end users of our work. Most of the time it is not clear as to why we are doing things or why things are, but there are those who think they know because they have an interest in roads or simply are users of the roads. Tis the same for end users of the railway and those who have an interest; just a different subject matter.

Nothing wrong with people having a moan and a rant. What's important is that if someone moans and is given a full, detailed and honest explanation, then they can accept and change their view as appropriate.

What annoys me is people who continue to spout one view over and over and don't care if they're proven wrong. They'll continue to moan, or do so elsewhere and pretend they were never corrected. It's certainly not unique to the rail industry!

There are some very important threads going on here that highlight a number of issues in the railway - and those who care about the industry they work in most likely agree.
