Could East Midland's trains Liverpool to Norwich service be HST in the future?
Would HSTs be more suitable for Waterloo-Exeter if they were reconfigured to 2+9 with 8 standard and 1 first? That that would give about 640 standard seats and maybe ok for peak time Waterloo-Salisbury displacing more 158/159s to strengthen Exeters?
I was chatting to a mobile tech recently who had some 'interesting' gossip/rumours. Allegedly Angel Trains have actually looked into the feasibility of fitting panto gear to their 43s, along with AC traction motors. Highly unlikely to happen I would think, but presumably it would be technically possible if they wanted to do it. Plenty of space in the luggage van end, and nothing much up on the roof above it. Still, I'd be very surprised if an AC HST appears anywhere!

How much would it cost to rebuild the Class 43's to have a pantograph on top with the AC traction motors etc... in the luggage van?
I would suspect also that the Mk3's would have to be rebuilt to have the luggage area included within the same coach as the Guard's office and if you do this the doors could be changed to be power operated like the Chiltern Mk3's?
The attempts to save HSTs are getting more desperate and creative... I'd face that they've had 40 years service which is pretty good going for a diesel and now their time has come...
Now if IEP was specified with interiors like the German ICE I'd certainly welcome them...

Which is fine if they are replaced with some better for a passenger comfort point of view, which they wont be. That is a sad indictment on the designers of today.

No, some of the platforms are too small on route such as March
Short answer: No
Medium answer: Have you been reading any of why HSTs are not suitable for most routes that have been suggested?
Long answer: the western part of the service may need a bit more capacity, or at least needs to be four carriages consistently, but most of the time the eastern end of the route is fine with two carriages on an hourly basis (there's also hourly GA & XC services Peterborough-Ely and hourly GA services Ely-Norwich).
The eastern part of the route contains very long stretches where trains using SP speeds can travel faster. This is unlikely to change. The route has very little, as far as I know, where anything can do more than 90mph. 158s are near ideal- perhaps 3-car ones, doubled on the western half, would be perfect.

Presumably the last HST to grace the metals will be the NR 'Flying Banana', which by their fleet standards is pretty cutting edge! Would they have any use for another one I wonder?
That would be the 125 Group, the leading proponents of HST preservation. Is there even a heritage outfit that could save them, take the best powercars and least rotten carriages and make say two sets to preserve, break up the rest for parts?
