Did one ever go over the Woodhead?

May have done bits, but I'm 99.9% certain that there's never been an HST across the whole route or through the tunnel. Given how much it was photographed in its final years, you'd think there'd be ample evidence if it ever happened.

One travelled back in time to 1964 when it briefly appeared in the background in the film Quadrophenia.

There's quite a few serious anachronistic blunders in Quadrophenia, I don't think they went to much effort at all to ensure period details were authentically represented. There's several scenes featuring what is clearly early 80s traffic, with a huge number of vehicles present that hadn't been thought of in the sixties.

I was travelling from Glasgow Cen to Bristol Parkway when XC HSTs were seen on the West Coast Main Line when we were stopped and held at Stafford North awaiting a route conductor to travel from Bescot and due to a problem at Penkridge, we were diverted via the Cannock line.

I'm wondering what were some of the more unusual routes the HST has ever travelled in service?
Has one ever been South East to Canterbury, Dover, Ramsgate or Rochester?
Thanks for any answers.

So, not down Dover way as I've not seen it mentioned?

Back in the early days of VXC, a 2-carriage VXC HST set made its way to Manchester Airport from Glasgow Central/Edinburgh (covering for a 158).
That must've been somewhat brisk!

Have any XC ones ever been through Nuneaton?

Certainly did during VXC days as I drove one. 43049 and 082 on a football special carrying Villa fans to Manchester for an FA cup tie. It also went into Victoria. I was relieved at Stockport and a Manchester driver took it into Vic.
I have also had Voyagers into Vic around the same time

Cambridge is on a diversionary route from the East Coast, but i've me we known the diversions to call here- always just passing through
Believe it or not, a HST service actually started at Cambridge, not once but twice !

Can't remember the exact dates, but both services where Merrymakers and ran as one off's in the late 70's / early 80's. The first service ran to Edinburgh and the second went to Dundee. Both ran on a Saturday.

Other than that, you are correct, Cambridge is on the diversionary route which has been used when the ECML has been closed for engineering work.

I remember around 1995 seeing an HST on the Penarth branch. Not sure if it was part of a rail tour or what, but I distinctly remember seeing it while passing on Windsor road, sat at the signal prior to cogan jct and passing under the train as it was stopped on the 'brains bridge'. Was very exciting at the time

Probably a "turning the set movement from Canton". They had to go behind the signal at Cogan Jn coming off the Penarth Branch to reverse having turned round the triangle. I have seen such a movement myself.

In BR days I’ve Ben on a Sunday diversion of XC Leeds to Plymouth HST which travelled south from Sheffield via Leicester, Nuneaton, Coventry, Leamington, Didcot West, Swindon, Bristol Parkway and then normal route. Very interesting!

Grand Central also officially started and terminated at Cambridge in 2009 during Stevenage weekend engineering works, offloading pax onto Liverpool St trains. I don't recall if they were officially accepting Cambridge to York and further north tickets, I seem to remember they were only officially conveying through passengers into and out of London to the north.
