I'm wondering what were some of the more unusual routes the HST has ever travelled in service?
Has one ever been South East to Canterbury, Dover, Ramsgate or Rochester?
Hows about North West to Barrow-In-Furness? Or South to Brighton or Portsmouth?

Thanks for any answers.

I once saw photos of a Great Western HST at Norwich and Great Yarmouth back in 1998 I think.

Around 1987 (I think) one was diverted from Peterborough via Ely, Cambridge and the Lea Valley to Liverpool St. I was working there at the time and remembered it arriving just before the evening peak. ECML must have been blocked south of PBO.

An HST has visited Exmouth a couple of times including at least one trip as extra capacity for an Exeter Chiefs game - therefore used as a service train.
Here’s one near Exton for the Avocet 150 celebrations.

There have been a couple of Portsmouth - Cardiff or Swansea? HST operated football specials in recent years, running via Eastleigh.

Cotswold Line Promotion group have organised HST specials to Bournemouth (for Swanage Rly) and to Portsmouth.

There are videos of all above on YouTube...

Perhaps not as unusual as some, but there've been HSTs to Llandudno.

Has one ever been to Manchesterr Victoria?
Don't know about HSTs, but one of the weirdest things I ever saw in Manchester Victoria was a single, solitary, brand new Mk3 DVT at the blocks (pre-rebuild, so there were many terminal platforms)... never did work out why it was there though.

There used to be a daily ECS run of a VXC HST along the Standedge route from West to East... I used to hear it passing Gledholt each evening from my childhood home which was a good half-mile from the railway.

They occasionally divert between Exeter St Davids and Castle Cary via Exeter Central and Yeovil, some even calling at varying locations such as Exeter Central, Honiton, Axminster, and Yeovil Junction.

A few pictures from St James Park, Exeter Central, and Honiton from the last time in June follow:

Did one ever go over the Woodhead?

Good point. There are a few routes that have been closed or mothballed since the HSTs were introduced. From memory, E-W between Oxford and Bletchley was being used for stock moves and the odd XC diversion right up until the early 1990s.

The NMT HST gets almost everywhere, I've seen it at Oban.

I used the Channel Tunnel Link service between Edinburgh and Waterloo when it was running, and it wound its way around London, including past the TVAM sudios in Camden.

It was common for GNER examples to run from Neville Hill standedge way to Manchester to spend a weekend contracted out to VXC, usually on newquay workings and ending the diagram at Craigentinny ready for monday morning. VWC sets worked out of London Paddington and Bournemouth on XC diagrams on weekends as did FGW examples out of Paignton/Newquay and Penzance ending up at Edinburgh or Glasgow before making their back workings to their home depots. fairly recently I observed a FGW set in Durham which had been hired out for an entire week to AXC so it still happens on occasions, tho usually its AXC and EMT hiring to VTEC/LNER these days.

FGW examples were also occasionally used on thames valley duties up to manchester. I remember one weekday after the remaining XC HSTs had been handed over to the SRA we "borrowed" a GW HST under the instruction "we need it back for the evening peak!" So it was booked to do a reading - birmingham and back run deputising for a voyager. However the job was stopped at Banbury. By chance the TM was one of the last Reading based TMs to still sign Stroud Valley AND HSTs so off via swindon and to cheltenham we went to be met there by a birmingham route conductor and we carried on..... to manchester! Suffice to say it didnt make it back to Paddington in time for the evening peak and Im not aware of any GW deputisations after that but that was probably down to traction knowledge expiring. It is also not know how it got back to Old Oak Common either!
