Taken around 1996/97 at Old oak common ( pic marked as 43018 )

I'm guessing it was involved in the Southall crash but thought the power car had more damage

Looks like a crash of some sort.

Get some glue and paint and it'll buff right out

Looks like it's hit something fairly substatial that was on the track, but off to the left a bit, judging by the damage.

Anyway, just get a bit of T-cut on it and it'll be fine.

Tree on the side of the track again?!

It was involved in an accident at Royal Oak on November 10th 1995 when it was in collision with 165 unit.

It's not from either of those accidents.

At Southall the front power car was in GW livery, and while the rear power car was in IC livery it was basically undamaged.

At Ladbroke Grove both were in GW livery.

Possibly from the Newton Abbot crash in 1994 where a 158 ran into the back of an HST in the platform, but I'm not certain.

Theblackwatch has it - a SPAD with minor injuries.

I'm sure now that it's from the Royal Oak crash mentioned above by theblackwatch. If I get a chance I'll have a look to see if I've still got issues of Modern Railways from then, which may possibly identify the power car.

OT, but does anyone remember the Class 50 that arrived at Paddington at approx 70mph with the up Night Riviera, on its side and on (literally) platform 6(?), around 1983? Quite spectacular pics in the evening papers!

There's no need to identify the power car, the OP did that in the initial post but then bizarrely further down asked which one it was! :???:

I know one book it'll be in, 'HST Silver Jubilee'. Unfortunately, we've just moved, & I'm unable to locate the book at the mo. Sods law, I need the book, & I can't find it! <(

It can only be one of two as only three have been written off, one in FGW livery, so I'm guessing this is the one involved in the Southall crash, Ladbroke Grove practically destroyed it so it can't be that.

Cant be...

Southall HST's were in Great Western Trains Merlin livery at the time with the rear power car being undamaged...

My guess is that its the Newton Abbot acident, where the class 158 ploughed into the back of the hst, not the later acident where the HST derailed on the bridge just outside the station...or the Royal Oak crash - while i think of it, can anyone enlighten me as to what actually happend at royal oak?

some of XC`s power cars were in a condition like this!, goes to show how much affort they put in, I think 43121 was the one that had to be re-built

That was 43101 (301) - there is a pic on the Railway Centre

As other posters have said, not Southall or Ladbroke Grove. Southall written off PC was 43173, there are images of the damage to it in the official report at:

I don't think it's the Newton Abbot accident. I believe this photo shows that incident and you can see the damage to 43071 is not as severe and also the powercar number is on the front under the driver's window unlike the picture in the first post.

Severn Tunnel, 1991? Rear power car hit by Sprinter. (Either 43134 or 43158 )

Calton Tunnel, Edinburgh, 1994? 43180 struck by runaway loco.

Paddington (Royal Oak?) 1995? Collision with class 165 which had SPADded a signal. Either 43018 or 43138. This seems the most likely if the picture was marked as 43018.

It's not Ladbroke Grove as the leading power car involved was burnt out by fire, and the picture above shows that the damage at Newton Abbott wasn't as severe.

The PC in the first pic looks to have buffers (well, looks like it had them), but then that pic of the 158 damage, you can see mounts for the buffers as the bottom skirt has been demolished!

Ladbroke Grove: 43011 (can't recall what the rear power car was)
Southall: 43173 (rear power car, IIRC t'was 43169, suffered no severe damage), 173 lost the entire right-hand-side of its body after being involved in a nasty side-swipe with a Freightliner train (not 100% on the last bit)
Ufton Nervet: 43019 (rear power, 43029, was OOU for a bit to check it over but still runs to this day)

If the pic is marked as 43018, I'd say that was it. theblackwatch appears to have the correct incident, although I don't recall hearing about it.

These appear to be present on all PCs, see this pic of 43090 and 43100 at Brush during refurb. Begs the question why they were there, perhaps mountings for conventional buffers as contingency, or protection from minor crash damage, or structural support for the weight of the cab structure...

Thanks for your Ideas guys and gals

If this was the result of a collision at Royal Oak in 1995 the thing that hit it must have also scraped the side as there is a rip in the bodywork.

As far as obtaining any info on the actual crash there is nothing out there that I can find.

This has me stumped, whichever power car it is is still in service so it wasn't written off. The yellow roof would suggest it was one of the power cars converted into DVTs, or were they all painted yellow?

My thought on that was that it must have fallen onto its side and been speared by something on the ground, then been hauled to vertical by a crane and whatever it is has snagged. Hence the bodywork is ripped outwards around the grille and "RC" areas

Yep this is a standard PC, standard Swallow livery. Some of the DVTs had full yellow ends (and one or two standard PCs did briefly too) Maybe this is what you're thinking of?

I think new cabs weren't too hard to replace, they come off back to the engine room bulkhead (as evidenced by the pic I posted earlier) Beyond the cab, the damage appears cosmetic.

Haven't found any info on the accident, presumably there would be an HMRI report somewhere.

heres a pic of 43018 at Crewe in August 1996 with what looks like a new cab fitted.

Snapper also has some here
