A rapid update on the Northolt TBMs today.
Shushila and Caroline are now (June 26) at 1838m and 1473m respectively.
That's 28m and 53m in the last week - not impressive, compared to the Chiltern machines which can do 20m+ a day.
I did read a conveyor was due to be set up in that area... This may also be a factor in delay while they test the system is working correctly.

Yes, I think that was originally due in service by the end of March but they gave themselves another 3 months to finish it, ie about now.
Plus all the portal HGV movements were to continue until it was ready.

Very different geology, and also different consequences if it goes wrong, especially given what is above them.
Indeed. HS2 were out in force yesterday on Herlwyn Avenue in Ruislip, dealing with an amount of drilling mud being forced up to the surface and spilling out over the road. From the video, I suspect it's through one of their test boreholes.

Another quick update today for just 3 days for the Northolt pair of TBMs (June 26-29).
Shushila has advanced 66m in that time, Caroline 9m.

Pictures on the HS2 site of the first steel segments of the Wendover Dean viaduct.

EDIT:
An update posted today for the Chiltern TBMs (for 4 July):
Florence is at 11773m, Cecilia at 11577m.
So Florence has hardly moved (2m) in 12 days, and presumably is at the Little Missenden shaft.
Cecilia has moved 146m in the same time, and is steadily closing in on Florence.

Edit 13 July:
Another Chiltern update, for 11 July, has been posted.
Florence is at 11877m (+104m), Cecilia at 11673m (+96m).
So Florence seems to have restarted after its pause at the Little Missenden shaft, while Cecilia is still approaching the shaft.
Both TBMs are now well away from the River Misbourne complications.

Edit 17 July:
An update for the Northolt TBMs for the last 18 days:
Shushila is at 2111m (+207m), and Caroline is at 1528m (+46m).
I think that puts Shushila just prior to crossing the West End Road (A4180), with mainly green space above the tunnels for a spell.
Caroline is moving slowly and is still alongside Herlwyn Avenue.

Exciting stuff,
this will be something to watch out but there is the Chesham shaft left before the north portal (time has flown for these TBMs) so i expect it to be somewhat fat down and miss it easily but who knows.

Also, is anyone else finding it weird we are getting no updates from Lydia? The last update was last month and it still has some way to go.

Another update for the Chiltern TBMs for the week July 11-18:
Florence is at 12015m (+138m), Cecilia at 11729m (+56m).
Looks like Florence is close to the 75% mark and on its way to the final vent shaft at Chesham Road, while Cecilia is still negotiating the Amersham shaft.

HS2 has revealed the new tunnel lining segment plant at Hartlepool is now running. Producing segments for Northolt tunnel East and Euston tunnels

Over 83,000 precast tunnel segments will be produced for HS2 in order to construct the Northolt tunnel east and Euston tunnel.
They will be used to construct 3.4miles of twin bored tunnel for the Northolt tunnel East, and 5miles of twin bored tunnel for the Euston tunnel between Old Oak Common and Euston. Each ring has an 8.8m outside diameter, is 35 centimetres thick and weighs seven tonnes.

The Hartlepool facility will be used to produce HS2 tunnel segments for around three years

The weekly update for the Chiltern TBMs shows (25 July): Florence at 12163m (+148m), Cecilia at 11733m (+4m).
So Florence is moving well (20m/day+) towards the Chesham Road shaft, while Cecilia is stopped near the Little Missenden shaft.
Chesham Road shaft is at about the 14.5km point, so at the present rate Florence could be there by November.
Then just 1.5km to go to finish.

wonder how the contractual and planning are set up for this in regard to the Euston tunnels being delayed. Are they going to have to hibernate the plant unless they get another client order in to fill the gap?

Are the Euston tunnels delayed, I thought they had to be dug because they can't fit out eastern end of Old Oak Common station if the spoil extraction is still going on.

Happy to be corrected, but I am under impression the TBMs need to be away from OOC, even if it is left as bare (not fitted out) tunnel.

This is my understanding also - the tunneling at OOC had to be done before the station opened, so it's either get the TBMs through to Camden now or be locked into OOC forever.

The Euston tunnels are delayed, by up to 2 years, but the TBMs will be installed at OOC and ready to go during 2025.
I expect the segment contract will deliver a stockpile for the 7.2km Euston tunnels to the OOC access point (or maybe the Willesden rail terminal).
Segments for the Northolt East tunnels, which at 5.5km are somewhat shorter than the Euston tunnels, will be delivered as to the original plan.

All the HS2 tunnelling is delayed, the question is to what extent...
OOC station box construction is also very behind and you wouldn't be able to get the TBMs in there till early 2024 at the earliest (but station box still not structurally complete), but doing that would then a) slow progress on the rest of the station box completion and b) the incomplete station box which would make TBM launch and operation logistically even harder for the first 20-30% of the tunnelling.
Hence the solution is to structurally complete the OOC station box, then deliver the TBMs, then start tunnelling so all the teams aren't getting in each others way. The TBMs will arrive in Camden well before they cause any issue on the critical path in the Euston area.
(TBM manufacture is also running slightly late)

There's a rather confused PR item from HS2 on the progress of the Northolt TBMs, Shushila and Caroline, boring the western and eastern tunnels respectively.
They are both said to have passed the "first mile" post, though this is not yet confirmed in the weekly progress data which is still dated 21 July, with Caroline at 1552m and nearly 600m behind Shushila at 2141m. But they have indeed bored over 2 miles of tunnel between them.

Even odder is their description of Shushila boring the "downline" towards London, and Caroline the "upline" towards Birmingham.
Unless HS2 has adopted right-hand running (not that it will matter with bi-di ETCS), Shushila is boring the down (Birmingham) tunnel and Caroline the up (London) one.
The tunnel being constructed by Sushila is the “downline” and will be where trains travelling south towards London will run once Britain’s new high speed rail line is operational. Caroline is constructing the “upline”, where trains will travel to the Midlands and North.

EDIT:
Update for the Chiltern TBMs today (1 August):
Florence is at 12339m (+176m in the last week), averaging 25m a day.
Cecilia is stationary at the Little Missenden shaft at 11733m, so now almost 600m behind Florence.
Florence would now appear to have made its only crossing under the GC/Met route, some 2 miles west of Amersham station.

Following the "unachievable" red flag for the HS2 project in the IPA report, environmentalists have been active again protesting at the perceived damage to the Chiltern aquifers.
The TBMs only have green fields and the odd minor road above them in the remainder of the tunnel drives.

Is this not also against the usual rule of "up" being towards London?

99% sure HS2 is using the conventional descriptions of Up = southbound/Down = northbound. Inaccuracies in the press release are sadly not unknown.

It is difficult to describe what TBM Shushila is doing, as it is boring the Birmingham-bound Northolt tunnel, but towards London.
Similarly for the Chiltern tunnels, TBM Florence is boring the London-bound tunnel, but towards Birmingham.
These things can get a little Alice in Wonderland at times... ;)

HS2 Ltd has a piece on the Chiltern TBMs reaching the Little Missenden shaft and the 75% complete mark, as we were aware from the weekly progress updates.
HS2 today confirmed that ‘Florence’ and ‘Cecilia’ – the two giant tunnelling machines digging HS2’s longest tunnels - have reached the Little Missenden ventilation shaft, more than three quarters of the way through their 10 mile drive under the Chilterns.

In parallel the TBM progress map shows Cecilia at 11805m (+82m in the last week), and so is moving again after its pause at Little Missenden.
No update on the other TBMs.

You'd think this was the time to announce the start of the Bromford tunnel bore, but apparently not, and the map graphic does not yet show "Mary Ann" at work.

EDIT:
Florence now updated to 12443m (+104m in the last week).

In the Northolt tunnels (for 18 days, 21 July-8 August):
Shushila is at 2432m (+290m and moving well at 16m/day).
Caroline is at 1711m (+158m, and improving progress at close to 9m/day).

I think that puts Shushila level with the south end of Ruislip Gardens station, finally past LU's Ruislip depot, and with green space above for a while.
Caroline would seem to be alongside Lawn Close, Ruislip.

Buried in the HS2 web site is an August update on progress with the Northolt West tunnels, and aimed at local residents.
It contains an area map showing the TBM positions relative to properties in the area, roughly corresponding to the TBM positions posted for 8 August.
The map also shows the location of the cross-passages to be bored at 500m intervals, starting with CP34 in mid-September.
Also shown is the location of several boreholes adjacent to the tunnels, which are used to monitor ground movement.
The maps also have the km points from Euston marked (the area is 21-22km from Euston).
Despite some problems early on, the tunnelling process now looks to be well in hand.
We have carried out extensive monitoring along the route and will continue to do so. Please be assured there has been negligible ground movement as a result of our tunnelling works.

EDIT August 21:
HS2 has today updated the position of TBM Caroline, boring the eastern bore of Northolt West tunnel.
It is at 1949m, +238m since August 8, or over 18m/day on average, a much better rate than latterly.
That puts Caroline south of Roundhays, and about to leave the domestic property zone on this section of its route.
Another similar push would put it, like Shushila, past West End Road.

Late on August 21, HS2 posted the positions of other TBMs (for 13 days from August 8):
Northolt: Shushila: 2546m (+114m)
Chiltern: Florence: 12550m (+107m), Cecilia 11901m (+96m).
All of these show slower progress (about 8m/day) than previously.

Mary Ann, launched at Bromford on August 4 is not yet shown on the map*.
*PS It appeared on the map on August 22, with a launch date of August 14, not the 4th as on the local progress page.
Anyway, Mary Ann is shown at 74m (as of Aug 21) so is under way.
If we count Lydia boring the logistics tunnel at OOC (no report since June 7), there are now 6 active TBMs at work on the project.

Thanks for the update. There has been a further update today on the Chiltern tunnels with further progress:

Florence 12645m (+202m since 8 Aug),
Cecilia 12036m (+231m since 8 Aug), now moving away from Little Missenden ventilation shaft with one more to reach.

Must remember the new tbm Mary Ann progress going forward...

Those Chiltern updates are for August 22, only one day later than yesterday's update, but an unlikely 100m further.
Sometimes you wonder if the numbers are correct, or maybe the timestamp they refer to.
Anyway, some good overall progress.
With bank holiday coming up, I'm completely unsure if they will work through or not.

TBM updates:

Chiltern (Aug 22-29): Florence 12778m (+133m), Cecilia 12173m (+137m).
Bromford (Aug 21-30): Mary Ann 118m (+44m).
Steady progress all round.

Updates for 4 TBMs for today (September 5), in the Chiltern and Northolt tunnels.
Chiltern: Florence 12918m (+140m since Aug 29), Cecilia 12375m (+202m).
Northolt: Shushila 2629m (+83m since Aug 21), Caroline 1967 (+18m).

The usual good progress at Chiltern, 20m/day or more, but rather limited at Northolt.
Cecilia looks to have just passed under the Met/GC railway near Little Missenden.
Shushila looks to have reached Bridgwater Road in Ruislip and is now entering a built-up area on the surface, about 300m short of the South Ruislip vent shaft.
Caroline is almost stopped near Bell Close.

Edit: Sept 9:
Another update at Northolt for only 3 days to Sept 8 (why?).
Shushila is at 2674m (+45m), Caroline at 1997m (+30m), so at least moving forward.

Edit Sep 12:
More progress reported today on the Chiltern tunnels (Sept 5-12):
Florence 13012m (+94m), Cecilia 12537m (+162m).
So Florence has now gone past the 13km mark, and Cecilia having a good week is catching up somewhat.

Edit Sep 15:
Another update for Northolt for a week (Sep 8-15) - maybe we are going to get weekly updates now:
Shushila: 2762m (+88m), Caroline: 2107m (+110m).
Looks like Caroline's best week so far (15.7m/day).
Shushila is now well into the industrial section of its route.
Caroline is now out of the residential zone and close to West End Road.

Edit Sep 19:
Updates today at Chiltern and Bromford.
Chiltern (Sep 12-19): Florence 13126m (+114m), Cecilia 12709m (+172m).
So continued good progress, 16m and 25m/day respectively, with Cecilia further catching up Florence.

At Bromford, Mary Ann is now at 216m, +98m since the first report on August 30, so about 5m/day.
It will at least now be wholly underground.

Edit Sep 22:
Another week's progress at Northolt to report (Sep 15-22):
Shushila is at 2882m (+120m), and Caroline is at 2226m (+119m).
Both of these are good figures of 17m/day, the best so far from the pair.
Shushila is now close to reaching the South Ruislip vent shaft, and Caroline is under the open green space next to Yeading Brook.

Thanks @LNW-GW Joint for keeping track! What do those metres convert to in terms of % total tunnelling required?
Well, Chiltern is 16km/10 miles, so if you average the current positions at 13km, the tunnels are 81% complete (after 2 years 4 months).
Northolt (West) is 8km/5 miles, so after a slow start they are 31% complete (after almost 1 year).
Both these tunnels should finish next year, Chiltern around Easter and Northolt maybe in the autumn.

These figures don't include the cross-passages every 500m of tunnel length, being excavated without TBMs.
They are following some distance behind the TBMs and will finish maybe 3 months later.

Bromford (5.5km) has just started, and Northolt East (also 5.5km) should start up early next year and finish in 2025.

I see an update has been posted today for TBM Lydia, boring the logistics tunnel across the OOC site to enable the Euston TBMs to be placed.
This is the first update since 7 June, and is at 113m, only 33m progress in 16 weeks.
So while the tunnel is short (853m), it is unlikely to finish in the 6 months planned.

Also an update for Chiltern's Cecilia (Sep 19-26), now at 12863m (+153m).
Just to keep us on our toes, TBM Mary Ann at Bromford has vanished from the map graphic.

Edit Sep 29:
Another update for Northolt/Bromford TBMs:

Northolt (Sep 22-29): Shushila is at 2915m (+33m), Caroline at 2373m (+147m).
Shushila is probably negotiating the vent shaft at South Ruislip.
Caroline has had its best rate of progress to date, 21m/day.

Bromford: (Sep 19-26):
Mary Ann is at 324m (+108m), so about 15m/day.
The TBM graphic is back on the map!

EDIT Oct 2:
HS2 has updated the Chiltern TBM positions today (Sep 26-Oct 2):
Florence is at 13127m (+1m) and Cecilia at 13047 (+184m).
So Florence has essentially been stopped for a couple of weeks, and Cecilia has caught up substantially, now being only 80m behind.
They are both about half-way between the Little Missenden and Chesham Road vent shafts.

EDIT Oct 3:
What to make of today's update on TBM Mary Ann at Bromford?
It is showing a position of 80m, whereas last week it was 324m.
So in the unlikely event of going backwards, it must be an error - maybe it should have been 380m? We'll see.
Or is HS2 Ltd just a bit distracted at the moment, given events unfolding in Manchester...

Edit: Oct 6:
More updates, Phase 1 still making progress despite the project earthquakes elsewhere.

The position of Mary Ann at Bromford on Oct 3 is now quoted at 98m, still a long way short of earlier reports of 324m.

Chiltern (Oct 2-5):
Florence 13340m (+213m), Cecilia 13097m (+50m).

The update on Oct 2 is best ignored, as the wider progress Sep 26-Oct 5 is much more consistent with the usual rates of about 20m/day.

Northolt (Sep 29-Oct 6):
Shushila 2915m (+0m), Caroline 2538m (+155m).
So Shushila is stopped near the South Ruislip vent shaft, and Caroline has caught up strongly at 22m/day.

Edit October 9:
The HS2 web site has so far not acknowledged last week's exocet through its plans (what on earth to write?).
However it is still updating Phase 1 TBM progress.
The Chiltern TBMs continue to make good progress (Oct 5-9):
Florence is at 13497m (+157m), Cecilia at 13193m (+96m).
Both are doing well over 20m/day.

Edit Oct 15:
Northolt TBMs have been updated (for Oct 6-13):
Shushila is at 2915m (+0), Caroline at 2615m (+87m).
So Sushila is stationary at the South Ruislip vent shaft, while Caroline catches up some more.
Shushila has now been stopped for more than 2 weeks, probably for maintenance.

It looks like the first of the Northolt East TBMs has been lowered down the access shaft at the OOC Victoria Road site.
Apparently they will be named on October 23.

The HS2 web site has a header which says the impact of the DfT decisions announced on October 4 have not been applied - and refers to DfT for more information.

Edit: Oct 16:
Chiltern (Oct 9-16): Florence 13667m (+170m), Cecilia 13391m (+198m), both doing 24m/day and more.
The Chesham Road vent shaft (the last of five in the tunnel bore) is at about 14.5km, which at this rate looks reachable by the end of November.

Edit: Oct 19:
At last, some good news to report from TBM Lydia, boring the logistics tunnel across the Old Oak Common site.
It's now posted at 290m, a big jump of 177m in the last 3 weeks, so progressing at 8m/day.
It has now completed one-third of the 853m tunnel, after 6 months, but at this new rate might complete early in the new year.
Whether the completed tunnel will ever see segments/spoil for the Euston tunnels is another matter, of course.

The chiltern TBMs, numbers updated today, have made good progress with Florence 13899m (+232m) and Cecilia 13566m (+175m) in the last week with Florence just over 2km remaining to reach the north portal.

Edit: not forgetting Northolt TBM Caroline updated Friday 2825m (+210m) with Sushilia at 2915m still stationary at the ventilation shaft.

Also the Birmingham TBM Mary Ann updated just now showing 4742m remaining which would mean 858m completed, but is showing 534m completed. A little confusing!
