If I get to the train just as the doors are closing, I just grab one door by the edge and yank it back open again. The door recognises the obstruction and fully re-opens anyway, allowing a few more people to run onto it. The dispatcher always starts yelling but what can he do which wouldnt delay the train even more?

I always find the train drivers never open the door on latecomers if they tap on the drivers window as they are walking past. I've saw old women, posh boys and children try this and not once have they opened the doors.

Please feel free to do this on my train at some point, so that I can come and have a not-very-discreet word with you in front of a train carriage full of punters. Will look forward to it, cheers

He can have the BTP meet you at the next station for one thing.

Or even on the train. Have seen a few instances of passengers running for the doors where BTP happen to be standing. The officer simply shakes his head and the people stop dead

I'll be honest. If I was the dispatcher I'd have you removed off the train. I think that you getting on the train very last minute is no ones fault but your own and I'm curious as to the long term damage this does to trains/doors. It may sound asinine but it's one of those things that drives me up the wall.

Your actions are idiotic to say the least. If I was the dispatcher there, I would be standing by the doors closest to where people come onto the plaform and stop people trying to still get on when the doors are closing.

Train doors are closed at 30 seconds (sometimes 60) before departure for a reason...to be able to achieve "Right Time Railway" so that the train can leave the station on time. So if you are late getting onto the platform then that's your own fault, wait for the next train!

Really? that's interesting. What would they be likely to say, you think? Would they arrest a person for doing that or a caution/fine?

I'm pretty sure there is some byelaw offense for either obstructing doors or forcing them. You probably won't get arrested for the first time but they would probably take your name etc etc and the guard will more than likely request your removal from that service.

One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the time, trains on the Conwy Valley line starting at Blaenau Ffestiniog are often held if the Ffestiniog Railway service from Porthamdog is running late. That's fair enough in my opinion, as Conwy Valley trains are hardly plentiful!

One thing I did see quite a while ago at Carlisle, was a 156 heading to Barrow-in-Furness about to depart. The doors were closed, and the guard was about to close his door and give the right away. Then he noticed an elderly couple waving and shouting from quite literally the other end of the station, and held the train for 2-3 mins...

That is a nice gesture, and one which the Guard clearly felt he would be able to justify when queried (or he was of the mindset that all this delay-chasing is a big pain in the a*se!). Sadly, as much as it's nice when this happens, the harsh reality is that TOC's are religious about delay minutes and the substantial costs incurred demonstrate why that is. A Guard who frequently shows a complete disregard for this issue is likely to be on the wrong end of a disciplinary, as unreasonable as that may sound to a passenger!

I agree that it was a nice gesture, although I hope the service would've been able to make up time - there are a lot of stops on the Cumbrian line!

I would think a stern word or two, and enough inconvenience to make you wish you'd accepted defeat and waited for the next one!

I saw a cocky looking "youf" doing that at Moorfields a couple of weeks ago. The doors were fully shut and the train was making that "about to pull out" noise, yet he dashed up and yanked them open then squeezed through the gap.

The train didn't move off for about two minutes, during which time I could see the lad becoming visibly more nervous, looking all around him and squirming in his seat. I'd love to know what happened to him but the train did eventually depart so I never found out.

Interesting viewpoint, especially when it was clear in the OP that it was not the passenger's fault.

Interesting insight into the railwayman's mindset, especially when it was clear in the OP that it was not the passenger's fault.

It was clear in the OP that it was not the passengers fault was it? For reference this is the OP:

I fail to see in there what couldn't be blamed on the runner!

You are clearly looking at a different post to me. The OP said the connecting train was delayed arriving at Lichfield.

Hate to burst your bubble but you might want to read what you are quoting before quoting it. If you do decide to re read it, you will realise I was not referring to the op's post but to the post by skyjuice06 at the top of page 5. In that situation I think what I typed was totally fair. Please read before quoting :p

Really? that's interesting. What would they be likely to say, you think? Would they arrest a person for doing that or a caution/fine?

How about the following to consider:

Byelaw 10 Section 5

In the case of automatic closing doors, no person shall enter or leave by the door when it is closing.

Byelaw 11 Section 5

No person shall move, operate, obstruct, stop or in any other way interfere with any automatic closing door, train, or any other equipment on the railway:

Except in a emergency, by means of any equipment on or near which there is a notice indicating that it is intended to be used in a emergency.

Byelaw 24 Section 2

Any person who is reasonably believed by a authorised person to be in breach of any of these byelaws shall leave the railway immediately if asked to do so by a authorised person.

Any person who is reasonably believed by a authorised person to be in breach of any of these byelaws and who fails to desist or leave when asked to do so by an authorised person may be removed by an authorised person using reasonable force. This right of removal is in addition to the imposition of any penalty for the breach of these byelaws.

Authorised Person is:

A preson acting in the course of his duties who:

(a) is a employee or agent of a Operator, or

(b) any other person authorised by a Operator,

or any constable acting in the execution of his duties upon or in connection with the railway.

All that said, do you still think it's acceptable to delay trains/hold doors with your disruptive behaviour? I'm sure the majority of passengers being told why their train was late would be very happy with your selfish behaviour.

I hope the rail staff here find my post informative.

You see once a person like you makes a train late, i can absolutely guarantee that the train will run late throughout its entire journey no matter how much slack is put into the timetable. Also i will go straight up to you in front of everyone else and publicly blame you for the delay. That is if i am in a good mood, if i am in a bad mood you will be off the train and if you dont get off the train wheels do not turn until you do, by which time the other passengers will be on your case.

Have you ever considered that by yanking the door open can cause the doors to remain open, which will mean the Traction Interlock Switch is isolated all passengers off and train empty to the depot. This has happened to me twice on a class 378, the first time the group of lads who did it had gone from the station before the Police arrived (called by a passenger), not bad considering that it was the last train of the night and everybody is blaming me! On the other occasion i pointed the person out who broke the door and told other passengers that if they have a problem with the train being cancelled to go and speak to the gentleman and ask him why he broke the doors.

There is a word for people like you..................... Its called SELFISH.

So passengers can not operate the passenger door buttons on trains equipped with them? that's interesting!

Ah, there is a line missing from that ;)
(i) in an emergency, by means of any equipment on or near which there is a notice indicating that it is intended to be used in an emergency; or

(ii) any equipment intended for the use of passengers in that way in normal operating circumstances.

Not sure what bubble you think I might have, but I did read before quoting and am fully aware which post you were referring too.

My point is that you seem to have automatically assumed that skyjuice06 was at fault in arriving at the last minute. Their post gave no indication as to the reason for the last minute arrival. It may have indeed been their fault, but equally how do you know they had not been delayed on a connecting service as in the OP?

The reason for the last minute arrival is not, in fact, relevant to the question of forcing back a door, so why add an unnecessary assumption which implies that the offence is somehow the greater if the late arrival is the fault of the passenger?

I hope when the day comes that you get it wrong and your clothing gets trapped in the door without triggering the detector, or the safety systems fail to operate correctly, the guard or dispatcher spots your plight before the train moves off!
