I'm currently writing a book about my grandfather, footballer Jimmy Seed, who played for Spurs and England in the 1920s.
On Christmas Day Spurs played Huddersfield at White Hart Lane, but rather than playing in the return leg on Boxing Day we believe Jimmy attended his sister's wedding up in Whitburn (near Sunderland). She was munitionette footballer, Minnie Seed.
Footballers in that era seemed to have spent half their lives on trains as the road network was still very basic, and motorised vehicles unreliable.
However, it might have been a tall order to get up to Newcastle (or Sunderland) in time for an afternoon wedding, so I was wondering if he might have caught a sleeper train from King's Cross on Christmas Day evening.
My research to date has been inconclusive, some saying that a full service was scheduled over holiday periods to meet the huge demand, but others have said that wasn't the case.
Any help gratefully received.
