That's also very useful. After returning from the war having been gassed Jimmy was rejected by Sunderland who thought his lungs would never recover. Jimmy was doing a bit of labouring and feeling sorry for himself whenm out of the blue (in July 1919) came a letter from the manager of Mid Rhondda FC who offered him a chance to play in the Welsh valleys - Tonypandy, to be precise.

In Jimmy's 1957 auto biography he describes a long and gloomy journey to Tonypandy via steam train. It's interesting to hear that he could have travelled to Cardiff via Newcastle, without too much trouble.

Reached Cardiff (in 1906) at 6.13pm so virtually nine hours on the train, and then the journey to Tonypandy.

Reached Cardiff (in 1906) at 6.13pm so virtually nine hours on the train, and then the journey to Tonypandy.

The through train ran in July 1922: 9.30 from Newcastle and 18.40 in Cardiff General; it included coaches for Barry and Swansea (n.b. this was summer so it might have terminated at Cardiff out of season). He would have been able to get a train from there to Tonypandy; the latter train was operated by the Rhymney Railway. He would probably have been able to get a ticket all the way, but it would be best to advise the booking clerk several days in advance as it would not be a quick calculation.
