GWR Intercity EMU?

That has been tried, originally had Thames Valley Trains, Wessex Trains and Wales and West.



Yes wires stop about mile east of Chippenham, but many masts were erected (but never been fitted out) for about 3 miles west of Chippenham too.


As many trains terminate at both Bristol and Cardiff (and Oxford too), had the electrification been completed would have (and still would be) possible to have electric IETs. Originally would have included Swansea trains too (but extension there seems unlikely now)

However I suspect the huge growth in Devon and Cornwall, and on Cotswold line, along with the disposal of castle HSTs probably means GWR could utilise many itself to avoid the current crowding, and not give away many.
Thanks for the detailed response.

The fact GWR need IET for replacing Castles etc is what draws me to the idea of using EMU on these shorter routes (though only Cardiff is presently possible).

IF GWR could get one of the off-lease classes (e.g 379, 350 etc), or more 387, then that would relieve a lot of pressure.

I don't believe that IET's have been approved to run on third rail tracks
IETs have run quite happily under diesel power between Basingstoke and Eastleigh depot or works for quite a few years, so that rules out problems with the third rail specifically.
In addition to Basingstoke-Eastleigh they can also run on diesel over third rail around Hunts Cross, though obviously that's TPE 802s rather than GWR 80xs.

Could the 379s be fitted with 3rd rail shoes?

And could it be possible to Install some overhead wiring say at the Bedwyn turnback siding ahead of full electrification to allow a emu fitted with batteries to be used away from.tje wires providing the batteries had enough range?.

The wires could be fed off a battery pack connected to the main grid .

Certainly if as GWRs MD has said a lot of the work has already been done why not just get on with it. Frees up a lot of dmus and possibly allow 379s/387's to be used on the North downs line or Cardiff to Portsmouth hbr

There is a need to electrify to Bristol, but the main Bristol service is via Bath, not via Parkway, so there's a fair stretch to do. Just wiring Parkway-Temple Meads wouldn't actually remove any DMUs at all as things stand.

Indeed and I overlooked the franchising debacle at the moment so it's probably unlikely anyway. Wasn't there Alphaline in the SW too?

Alphaline was a brand name adopted by Wales and West for what were previously known as Regional Express services (basically those operated by 158s).

I suspect there wouldn't be too much difficulty getting approval for IETS to run on the Southwestern, a 12 car class 395 (same family of trains)is 10 metres longer than a 9 car 801.
Route gauging is not quite as straightforward as you make it out to be.

The IET depot at Bristol is near the NE curve of where the Seven Tunnel line crosses the Bristol Parkway (Badminton) line. If only electrified from Chippenham empty EMU stock wouldn't be able to access Bristol Temple Meads (except by reversing at Swindon).

As stated above, just doing Bristol Parkway - Temple Meads on its own is fairly useless. Could actually convert the Bristol TM - Filton Abbey Wood shuttle to EMU (saving one DMU) but this is due to be extended to Henbury so would need to add the SE curve and the short section to Henbury.

Any of the conversions still leave problem of what to do with the DMU local trains, a battery EMU could probably do certain distance from the wires, but have 3 trains an hour going to Westbury, which sort of suggests wiring makes sense.

Also have 3 trains per hour towards Gloucester, and 3 going south from Bristol via Yatton (but one is XC that has no bimodes), so there is a question of where any changeover to diesel or battery should end. There is such a surplus of (non Battery fitted) EMUs that there is strong case for taking wires but further to Henbury, Weston-super-Mare, Frome, Warminster for local stopping services.

On other hand a dual voltage battery EMU fitted out for 3+ hour journeys that can get to Gloucester, Weymouth, Portsmouth, Worcester, is what GWR Bristol area really needs to cover their hourly regional services.

At this point it will be obvious now got 3 types of train, a local one, a regional one (with batteries), and a high speed electric IET for London services. I am not convinced a one size fits all solution is the right answer.

The IET Depot at Filton/Stoke Gifford (Bristol) is in the “diamond” junction between Bristol Parkway and Patchway. The normal entrance and exit lines are at Stoke Gifford West junction.

Until then there's no realistic chance of EMUs on the GWML, unless you want to miss out Bath & either call at Swindon twice, either side of Chippenham, or do something 'interesting' at Wotton Bassett Junction by stopping there & the driver changes direction they're driving

I think that you have to make sure that electrification is done for local routes such as the following, before looking at InterCity Emu:

Local routes:

Didcot Parkway - Oxford
Oxford - Banbury
Oxford - Worcester Shrub Hill/Great Malvern
Bristol Temple Meads - Bath
Bristol Temple Meads - Stoke Gifford
Bristol Temple Meads - Gloucester
Bristol Temple Meads - Yeovil Pen Mill
Bristol Temple Meads - Taunton
Bristol temple Meads - Severn Beach
Bristol Temple Meads - Exeter St David's
Bristol Temple Meads - Westbury

Doing the above, will help with replacing Class 158, 165 & 166 but also with making InterCity Services quicker as well.

As pointed out to myself earlier in this thread current electrification stops short of Chippenham station, so you would also need to miss out Chippenham on an EMU to Bristol, but on the positive side it would save calling at Swindon twice:smile:

Basically GWR refused saying that the loss of First Class and catering revenue on the more express service couldn't justify it. I don't believe that's true in any way.

I do miss the Newbury IET services. Best way to get a carriage to yourself between Paddington and Reading on a non-stop service, even with a 5-car unit :lol:

That was partly in my mind when starting the thread, there are EMU with first class.

However, since Cardiff to London would still be hourly on the IET from Swansea* the first class market would still be catered for irrespective of the stock on the other service per hour.

I suspect it was a case of finding a reason not to bring back Bedwyn.

Agreed. Sadly it seems GWR have gone back to the old FGW attitude of 2005 aka if we don't have to do something we won't.

You could have a battery 387 but it would need to loose a traction pack and as such will not be able to do 110mph.

Thinking about all the problems with the IETs and the number of shortforms on the GWR mainline is there scope to make more of the services EMU?
GWR's 21 nine-car class 800s were originally ordered as class 801s (which some refer to as Intercity EMUs even though they are technically speaking bi-modes but operationally they are EMUs). The one silver lining of the GW electrification truncation was that a variation was made to the IEP order so that GWR got some 9-car bi-modes - if it had all gone to plan we would have wires to Swansea etc. but when the Severn tunnel was closed all diverts via Gloucester would have had to be formed with 5-car sets since all GWR's class 800s (and thus the only bi-modes in the fleet, except perhaps the 7 nine-car class 802s which if I recall correctly were a GWR initiative as part of the franchise bid for the London-Cornwall services to replace IC125s) would have been 5-car sets.

I understand the Lumo class 803s are EMUs (no diesel-gensets) but otherwise not really much different from LNER's 800s and 801s so presumably the diesel gensets (and/or the coaches containing them) could be swapped between class 800/801 units to give GWR some Intercity EMUs (which would effectively be 9-car class 803s) if that was desired. However, until the missing bits of electrification are completed this is largely a non-starter.

added an extra train into Paddington which cannot be done so this only works if the EMU I added can be a westwards extension of the Didcot terminator.
Another aspect of the original IEP/GWEP plans was that an extra 2 Intercity services per hour would run between Paddington and Bristol Parkway. At peak times, I think one of these extras was intended to extend to Cardiff as a third train per hour while off-peak both would have run to Bristol Temple Meads, providing 4 trains per hour between Bristol and London off-peak (the existing 2tph via Bath plus the new services via Bristol Parkway). However due to COVID I understand the two extra services to Bristol Parkway have never run, which I understand is why GWR had a few spare IETs which they claim can allow them to ditch the Castle HSTs.

I would suggest that a better idea would be to remove the extra services to/from Carmarthen which GWR introduced recently (another thing supposedly enabled by the spare IETs left as a result of the extra Bristol Parkway serivces being abandoned due to COVID, despite them apparently being used to replace the Castle HSTs). Unfortunately a 9-car class 800 won't fit in Carmarthen station (I think the signal is right at the end of the platform so SDO isn't an option sadly) so these all have to be 5-car units screwing up what in my mind should be a uniform 9-car Paddington-Swansea service.

That's an interesting one. While Cardiff-Swansea electrification was outright cancelled, if memory serves the Oxford and Bristol routes were part of what was known as the 'Hendy tail' - schemes which were pushed back to be delivered in a subsequent control period after the 'Hendy review'. Therefore aren't those schemes are technically just delayed and should still be happening?

I think that you have to make sure that electrification is done for local routes such as the following, before looking at InterCity Emu:

While all of that should indeed be wired up eventually, not all of it is that high up the priority list, particularly Oxford-Hereford/GreatMalvern which is way behind Oxford-Coventry in my view. As stated above, I don't think Didcot-Oxford, Swindon-Bath-Bristol and Bristol Parkway - Bristol Temple Meads have ever been officially cancelled and those (plus Cardiff-Swansea) were originally considered sufficient to justify a fleet of 21 nine-car class 801s and wiring just those Oxford and Bristol bits would therefore enable GWR to have a number of class 803s (ie. Intercity EMUs). The way I'd do it is:
  1. order 126 new AT-300 EMU centre cars (a mix of motor coaches and trailer coaches as appropriate, but no driving vehicles or diesel gensets)
  2. take GWR's 36 five-car class 800s and reform them into 18 eight-car bi-mode sets, leaving 18 pairs of orphaned driving vehicles (ie. 36 cabs) with no centre cars
  3. combine the 126 new centre cars with the 36 orphaned class 800 driving vehicles, creating 18 'new' nine-car class 803 EMUs
  4. send the 18 eight-car bi-modes created in step 2 to XC
GWR's Intercity fleet would then consist of:
  • 22 five-car bi-modes (class 802)
  • 35 nine-car bi-modes class (21 class 800 and 14 class 802)
  • 18 nine-car EMUs (class 803) for PAD-Oxford, PAD-Bristol, PAD-Cardiff and PAD-Swansea services

Ultimately electrification through Bath to Bristol would release a lot of diesel IETs to the point that maybe even Cross Country could have some for services into the South West from the North East (being as that would also pass through other regions using IETs)
This is exactly why I don't think there is any need to build more bi-mode Intercity trains for the likes of CrossCountry, Grand Central etc. - there are plenty of bi-mode 80x units (or diesel IETs as you put it) around to cascade as electrification progresses.

I believe the Alphaline brand was actually created by Regional Railways for services which provided certain facilities (such as a catering trolley and on-board pay phone) although as far as I know it was only ever a symbol on the timetable in BR days and never made it onto the livery of the trains. Wales & West (and their successors Wales & Borders and Wessex Trains) went further and applied the brand to the livery of the 158s (their other stock was NOT branded Alphaline, only the 158s are Alphalines).

Got to be slightly wary that no going to reopen a debate similar to Portsmouth direct line where 450s and 444s operate, is it reasonable to mix IETs and 387s and charge same for what is clearly different experience.

Even GWRs fleet of 158s are near end of its life (already about 33 years old), much older than the first generation DMUs or mk1 hauled stock they replaced. The turbos are all 31+ years old too. Even if replace them in 5 years time (and most are leased to 2028) any replacement that has same lifespan will be around to 2060s, so a replacement that is a diesel (only) train is unlikely.

The more I think about it, almost seems as if the proposed new battery EMU and current 387 is going to be a bad compromise because they will be used on everything from local stoppers /busy commuter services to longer distance services with advance tickets and seat reservations, and one interior layout and configuration won't fit both. It becomes case of do you have fleet which does 2 jobs poorly, or create separate commuter and express EMU fleets.

Compromising the interior layout with wide doors is necessary where you have very frequent stops and lots of passengers getting on and off at most of those stops, but not on an express service which can go for 20 minutes or so without stops. Dwell times are (or should be) of much less concern when there are fewer stops to begin with. My view is that 387s/350s/379s should provide the local stoppers on the electrified routes*, 800s/802s and 803s for Intercity services and a fleet of 90-100mph tri-modes (3rd rail, OHLE and battery/diesel) with a configuration similar to a 442/444 should be built for Cardiff-Portsmouth, Bristol-Weymouth and Waterloo-Exeter.

* these local EMU services could include a new Bristol-Oxford stopping service calling at Keynsham and Oldfield Park, along with some possible new stations and the obvious ones like Bath and Swindon.

  • 35 nine-car bi-modes class (21 class 800 and 14 class 802)
  • 18 nine-car EMUs (class 803) for PAD-Oxford, PAD-Bristol, PAD-Cardiff and PAD-Swansea services


This is exactly why I don't think there is any need to build more bi-mode Intercity trains for the likes of CrossCountry, Grand Central etc. - there are plenty of bi-mode 80x units (or diesel IETs as you put it) around to cascade as electrification progresses.


I believe the Alphaline brand was actually created by Regional Railways for services which provided certain facilities (such as a catering trolley and on-board pay phone) although as far as I know it was only ever a symbol on the timetable in BR days and never made it onto the livery of the trains. Wales & West (and their successors Wales & Borders and Wessex Trains) went further and applied the brand to the livery of the 158s (their other stock was NOT branded Alphaline, only the 158s are Alphalines).



This. The 387s, 379s, 350s etc. bodyshells with their double-width doors are not capable of providing an interior layout that at least equals that possible on a unit with single-width doors. Compromising the interior layout with wide doors is necessary where you have very frequent stops and lots of passengers getting on and off at most of those stops, but not on an express service which can go for 20 minutes or so without stops. Dwell times are (or should be) of much less concern when there are fewer stops to begin with. My view is that 387s/350s/379s should provide the local stoppers on the electrified routes*, 800s/802s and 803s for Intercity services and a fleet of 90-100mph tri-modes (3rd rail, OHLE and battery/diesel) with a configuration similar to a 442/444 should be built for Cardiff-Portsmouth, Bristol-Weymouth and Waterloo-Exeter.

* these local EMU services could include a new Bristol-Oxford stopping service calling at Keynsham and Oldfield Park, along with some possible new stations and the obvious ones like Bath and Swindon.
I have to take issue with the idea that London to Swansea should be fully 9 cars. If this happened then you'd see even fewer 9 car sets on the busier London to Plymouth and Penzance route. In an ideal world , yes everything on Padd to Swansea and Penzance should be a 9, but it keeps being pointed out, GWR is at bottom of the queue for extra coaches so I don't think it'll ever happen.

GWR's 21 nine-car class 800s were originally ordered as class 801s (which some refer to as Intercity EMUs even though they are technically speaking bi-modes but operationally they are EMUs).
The original IET order is fairly irrelevant. Originally the 9 car electric sets were for South Wales and 5/10 car everywhere else closer than Plymouth. This order failed to account for peak time Cotswold demand and doesn't account for Carmarthen services which must be 5 car.
(and thus the only bi-modes in the fleet, except perhaps the 7 nine-car class 802s which if I recall correctly were a GWR initiative as part of the franchise bid for the London-Cornwall services to replace IC125s)
The 802s were ordered after the 800 order was changed. Primarily they were for Cornwall (originally proposed 222s) with a few 9 cars for peak time Cotswold services.

The procurement was led by FG/GWR but still very much under DfT instruction and ended with DfT spec units.
I understand the Lumo class 803s are EMUs (no diesel-gensets) but otherwise not really much different from LNER's 800s and 801s so presumably the diesel gensets (and/or the coaches containing them) could be swapped between class 800/801 units to give GWR some Intercity EMUs (which would effectively be 9-car class 803s) if that was desired. However, until the missing bits of electrification are completed this is largely a non-starter.
To be clear the 801s have 1 diesel generator for emergency use. Hitachi also charge extra if this is used.

That's an interesting one. While Cardiff-Swansea electrification was outright cancelled, if memory serves the Oxford and Bristol routes were part of what was known as the 'Hendy tail' - schemes which were pushed back to be delivered in a subsequent control period after the 'Hendy review'. Therefore aren't those schemes are technically just delayed and should still be happening?
They were only delayed not cancelled. They could be restarted if funded.
While all of that should indeed be wired up eventually, not all of it is that high up the priority list, particularly Oxford-Hereford/GreatMalvern which is way behind Oxford-Coventry in my view. As stated above, I don't think Didcot-Oxford, Swindon-Bath-Bristol and Bristol Parkway - Bristol Temple Meads have ever been officially cancelled and those (plus Cardiff-Swansea) were originally considered sufficient to justify a fleet of 21 nine-car class 801s and wiring just those Oxford and Bristol bits would therefore enable GWR to have a number of class 803s (ie. Intercity EMUs). The way I'd do it is:
  1. order 126 new AT-300 EMU centre cars (a mix of motor coaches and trailer coaches as appropriate, but no driving vehicles or diesel gensets)
  2. take GWR's 36 five-car class 800s and reform them into 18 eight-car bi-mode sets, leaving 18 pairs of orphaned driving vehicles (ie. 36 cabs) with no centre cars
  3. combine the 126 new centre cars with the 36 orphaned class 800 driving vehicles, creating 18 'new' nine-car class 803 EMUs
  4. send the 18 eight-car bi-modes created in step 2 to XC
GWR's Intercity fleet would then consist of:
  • 22 five-car bi-modes (class 802)
  • 35 nine-car bi-modes class (21 class 800 and 14 class 802)
  • 18 nine-car EMUs (class 803) for PAD-Oxford, PAD-Bristol, PAD-Cardiff and PAD-Swansea services
You can't have AT300s with an even number of vehicles.

You are not going to need 9 car trains at all times of the day I don't suspect whether the trains are travelling London - Plymouth, London to Cardiff/Swansea or London - The Costwolds etc....

As there is not enough 9 car class 80X trains, then certainly for the time being you will have two five car class 80x units coupled together, which GWR last I check do seem to have a surplus of in their stock.

Both types of unit are (a) high floor (so assistance required), and (b) compliant with relevant disability regulations.

Carmarthen could take a nine car 80X, it just needs some infrastructure engineering work. Unfortunately, I suspect no one wants to pay for the alterations.

I’m pretty sure if you made it worthwhile for Hitachi, they could come up with a solution to enable an AT300 train with an even number of vehicles.

Sadly part of the reason we are in a mess is the practice of (more or less) buying off the shelf designs of train, rather than having the money and intelligence to put together a extremely detailed engineering specification and then getting various manufacturers to bid to build trains that meet this specification, including mandatory requirements for interoperability with vehicles from rival manufacturers.

Your persistent obsession and repetition concerning double doors and doors at thirds never ceases to amaze (and somewhat tire) me.
Well, the rail industry's persistent 'suburbanisation' of what should be long-distance services never ceases to tire and annoy me. I think there was a time when I had not realised the implications of suburban bodyshells and would have been happy to see 377s just about anywhere; it may have been the 'no 450' campaign on the Portsmouth direct that made me notice, or maybe it was something else. Regardless of how I came to see the light, as a perfectionist I feel any new train should seek to improve upon (or at least equal) the trains it replaces in every respect. Where there are unavoidable tradeoffs (such as standing vs seating capacity) which cannot realistically both be improved upon then, as a passenger, I consider the overal product to be an improvement in quality if it prioritises passenger comfort. Since I find standing still for any significant length of time uncomfortable (and assume I cannot be alone in this) avoiding the need for passengers to stand at all is one of my priorities and therefore standing capacity as a metric is one which I feel shouldn't be seen as important in most cases (because there should be sufficient carriages to ensure little or no standing anyway).

Did you both miss that my proposal involves ordering 126 additional vehicles to effectively lengthen a number of 5-car class 800s to 9-car units (converting them to class 803 EMUs at the same time)? This addresses (at least partially) both the surplus of 5-car units and the shortage of 9-car units. I have not proposed GWR losing any of their existing 9-car bi-modes so if anything there would more of those available for Plymouth, Cornwall and the Cotswolds (thanks to the 9-car class 803 EMUs taking over Swansea, Cardiff, Bristol and Oxford services) the new AT-300 EMU centre cars (a mix of motor coaches and trailer coaches as appropriate, but no driving vehicles or diesel gensets).

Yes, it comes at the cost of the Carmarthen services, but what it achieves is:
  • reduces the problem of double 5-car sets (I can't understand why you think this would be by moving 9-cars away from the South West)
  • makes use of the additional electrification by converting some 5-car bi-mode units to 9-car class 803 EMUs
  • makes a good number of 8-car bi-modes available for cascade to XC's Edinburgh-Plymouth route, which in turn achieves:
    • a potentially-adequate replacement for the outgoing IC125 sets
    • potentially, a hugely significant increase in capacity at XC, unless it doesn't happen before 2035 and you take the opportunity to scrap some Voyagers instead of cassading them internally at XC to lengthen other services
    • a reduction in XC services burning diesel under the wires, since the ex-GWR 8-car bi-modes would be able to run in electric mode from Scotland to York/Leeds, Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads and, eventually, Sheffield to Derby even if I limit myself only to schemes which are apparently currently in the pipeline
The biggest benefit here is probably the cascade to XC, and it does all this without increasing the number of diesel gensets (or driving vehicles) across the AT-300 fleet. The number of units GWR loses to XC is exactly equal to the number of GWR units extended from 5-cars to 9-cars. Given that a pair of 5-car 800s has, if I recall correctly, only 3 more seats than a 9-car set (630 vs 627 I think) there shouldn't be a problem unless there are far fewer diagramed pairs of 5-car sets that I guess.

Since I do not know how many diagrams are needed on each of GWR's Intercity routes (and they are probably interworked anyway) the original IET order (and the subsequent order for 7 additional 9-car class 802s to cover Paddington - Oxford fast services when electrification to Oxford was delayed) is what I have used to try and guestimate how many of the existing bi-modes could be replaced by how many 9-car class 803 EMUs when GWEP is finally completed.

I've dug up this article from August 2015 regarding the first 29 class 802s, which confirms that there were indeed only going to be 7 nine-car 802s at that stage. Indeed, the electrification needs to be done before reducing the number of bi-modes. Since the electrification is meerly delayed, it is a question of when it is completed, rather than if. When it's done though, GWR will need fewer bi-modes and I think the opportunity should then be taken to do all of the following:
  • increase the number of 9-car class 80x units
  • reduce the number of 5-car class 80x units
  • provide XC with a number of class 80x bi-mode units, ideally formed of 8-cars each but at least 7-cars, without ordering any more diesel gensets, since the gensets from the existing GWR class 800s that will no longer be needed as bi-modes can be used
Clearly, given that GWR has a surplus of 5-car class 80x units there should be no need to order additional driving cars, just intermediate motor/trailer cars, to deliver the increase in 9-car units.

Why not?

I suggested eight-car sets for XC for the following reasons:
  • 8-car AT-300 units felt like a useful uplift in capacity compared to their 7-car IC125s and 8-car (pairs of 4-car) Voyagers (while 9-cars might be excessive)
  • AT-300 bi-modes (other than the 810s I think) do not have gensets under the driving cars, meaning 3 gensets per 5-car class 800/802 - thus 6 gensets under each pair of 5-car class 800/802 units which if you put them all into one unit gives you 6 genset vehicles plus 2 driving cars = an 8-car unit
  • the class 800/802 design with 3 gensets per 5-car set and 4-or-5 gensets per 9-car was considered to offer insufficient performance in diesel mode for EMR, hence the class 810 design has 4 gensets under each 5-car unit (I may be remembering some of this incorrectly) - I therefore decided to try and play it safe performance wise for any class 800s cascaded to XC by not including any trailer cars (other than the two driving cars) and putting a genset under all the intermediate coaches
If there is a good reason that 8-cars cannot be formed up then I guess you could rejig in different ways to give XC either 7-car or 9-car sets, but it's not as easy to work out as 2x5-car set = 1x 8-car and one pair of driving vehicles.

I guess it doesn't matter all that much whether it is the 5-car 800s or the 5-car 802s that are 'messed around with' to send to XC. I understand most of the specification differences between them (such as larger fuel tanks on the 802s) have now been eliminated, by upgrading the GWR 800s to the 802 spec, except for one (which I have a feeling might be the design of the brake resistors on the roof?) I did also think that having some Agility units (class 800s) cascade to XC rather than GWR's 802s might actually be a help since Agility has depots at both Bristol Parkway and Doncaster would could provide units for XC, but I suppose that also applies to the class 802s. However, does the train supply agreement also restrict where the class 800s operate? Would there be a problem with them suddenly being used alot more on services to Devon and Cornwall and many fewer services to South Wales (which, summer Saturdays excepted, potentially could be reduced to just one a day to Carmarthen), Oxford and Bristol?

Perhaps not, but I very much doubt there are many IET services, at any time of day, where a 5-car set would be sufficient at the Paddington end of the route. Yes, there are probably a few (back it the day the forums told me that some of the class 180 diagrams could cope with just the single 5-car class 180, but I think there were only five 180s in FirstGW's fleet at the time) but nowhere near enough to justify as many 5-car units as GWR have. A pair of 5-car units on a diagram which would suit a 7-car or 8-car unit is even more wasteful than putting a 9-car unit on such a diagram.

What work would be required, do you know? I imagine it could be fairly significant, as there is pointwork fairly close behind the signal I think.

Isn't that what IEP was to a degree? The specification could have been a lot better than it was though - far too many 'half sets' ordered, uncomfortable seats (but at least that can hopefully be put right by a refurb) and a failure to specify plug doors.

That ridiculous late group of neighbourhood watch Karens is the last thing a person would want to be inspired by. The fact it made the news made me embarrassed to be a local. Travelling to Haslemere on 450s gave me deep vein thrombosis indeed :lol: What tosh.

No but they do have to reach a home depot every so often, iirc it's every 36 hours.

The original 802s for the South West were authorised in 2015 when refurbished HSTs were found too expensive. The additional units were authorised at the same time as the 801/800 change. Nowadays you get both 800 and 802 9 cars in the South West.

You could just extend the 802s to 9 cars and send about half to XC. Far easier than messing around with the 800s. You could probably reuse old gensets in the new cars.

There was never electrification beyond Oxford. The 9 car units were due to a mess up in the IEP order which had Cotswold peak services only 5 car, rather than full length.
