If the 14 9 car 802s and 21 9 car 800s kept their kitchens im sure that would provide enough resilience to provide the majority of Padd to Penzance services. The 5s would then have additional seating and would be more or less perfect for many Oxford, Cardiff, Cheltenham services plus I suppose some Swansea and Exeter stoppers.

I would argue that the 9 car 800s could lose their kitchens. More seats are needed in them

Trouble is with a small sub fleet on GWR is that it would inevitably cause big problems at Paddington and totally lose the ability to swap sets as required which would be detrimental to the Penzance route. A kitchen is needed in my opinion certainly on all 9 car sets. Perhaps bin them from the 5s and keep the 5s away from the south west?

The seating on the other hand is beyond bad now for as you say 5 hour journies (many passengers are doing at least 3 to 4 hours and many between 4 and 5). That puts the route alongside anglo Scottish stuff and I'm not sure those routes would settle for such poor seating in standard. The worst thing is they have got much worse with age, and we are only 4 years in! What will the padding be like in another 4 years?! Something needs to be done.

But there are the SAME seats on anglo Scottish in standard surely ? Even if we will not stand for it as you say what can we do except drive or fly ?

There are trains joining the two, albeit most with the Fainsa Sophia seat too!

They need an LNER style buffet in them. The fact they don't is criminal. The trolleys never appear and is a shambles of an idea. The amount of times you here "I will be located in carriage a for standard class customers wanting hot beverages etc". It may as well be a buffet.

Carpets need replacing they are in a horrendous condition. And obviously the seats everyone knows about that.
