Saw a class 800 for the first time in the flesh yesterday at York Station.

Went past while I waiting for my train home. Very impressed by the external looks of it.

Didn't catch the number but it was all over white and was definitely running on diesel only.

That would of been 800016 on its delivery run from Hitachi Aycliffe - Doncaster IEP depot.

Please remember that the vast majority of passenger kilometres on the IEP fleet will be done under the wires where there would be no need for the diesel engine to be active. On the East Coast the worst case scenario is the Highland Chieftan but that will still spend most of its journey under the wires - currently there are 4 hours and 39 minutes (London-Haymarket) under the wires compared to the total 8 hours 6 minute journey time. With EGIP wiring up to Dunblane, this becomes 5 hours 28 under the wires around the same time that the IEP fleet will replace the HSTs on EC. As the rolling programme of electrification continues this under-wire journey time increases more and more and so there will be less and less time spent with the diesel engine running.

With The current position of the electrification of the GWML these new trains for the cardiff swansea route will spend about 50% of their time underperforming whilst in diesel mode ( a noisy 95 mph max) and those who will be on the 802's will have to suffer this for up to 80% of their journey as the wires run out at newbury just around 50 miles from paddington and the train will never exceed the HST in quietness at your seat when compared to XC,class800/802 and 159's

I feel as though:
  • "underperforming"
  • "noisy"
  • "95 mph max"
  • "never exceed the HST in quietness"
All require sources, which are not yet publicly available. In fact the IEP specification casts doubt on some of them...

-I can assure you 80x's are faster than 95mph in diesel!

-HST are loco hauled so no nothing will be as quiet but the 80x's are very close second!!

Well now that it will have to be diesel operation between Cardiff and Swansea, they'll be getting plenty of use in this mode! ;)

Just seen a few photos showing 800005 and 800006 working 5X85 Stoke Gifford to stoke Gifford yesterday evening, with the first run up to Oxford and up the Cotswold line to Worcester.

Is there a link to the photos?

Another Cotswold Line visit is planned for tonight, this time on a magical mystery tour from Stoke Gifford to Stoke Gifford via Cheltenham, Worcester, Oxford, Reading, Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon and Bath.

Anyone know why it's been split into four different stages as opposed to one long stage? I suppose it's for flexibility reasons?

I have to say one thing about the new Hitachi Class 800 et all. The design of these new trains has had some thought put into them as they are a nice looking passenger train that is state of the art. As long as the toilets do not pose a foul sewage smell to the whole carriage or in some cases. The whole train consist. I will be perfectly fine with that as the 220/221's suffer from this problem and to be honest, that is the reason why I try my best to avoid them if I can do so :).

I personally will be looking forward to riding these brand new trains next year and to be honest. It is one of the modern era trains that isn't ugly in my opinion. So I am giving the designers at Hitachi a big thumbs up already. I would have like Hitachi to have used the Cummins QSK19's for diesel mode. But MTU's will do the job reasonable well.

I am hoping that we won't hear that mind numbing drone on those train when going on a long haul trip like you hear on the 158's between Liverpool and Norwich.

Just a question here. Would anyone know if East Midlands Trains are getting any of those new trains in the future? As I think some of these trains would look great in the East Midlands Trains colours :).

The MML announcement commits the next franchise to order new bi-modes by 2022.
Stagecoach would have to win the franchise again for the present livery to continue.

Thanks for the explination on that mate and I hope that Stagecoach will bid and win it again as they have done a better job than the previous bidder in my opinion.

What the advantage be if they were Cummins engines?
Cummins is a popular world engine maker and most of their diesel engines have amazing reliability. If the 4BT and the 6BT is anything to go by :). The ISC's are mostly okay too.

From what I hear on these forums the QSK is pretty much unloved as far as reliability, noise and fuel consumption are concerned. However, the fact that it was used by all three DMU manufacturers in the UK in the early 2000s suggests it may have been the only design to meet emissions requirements. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't meet the current regulations so is not an option anyway.

Indeed. Perhaps those advocating the use of Cummins engines should start here:

Does anyone else agree with me though that the First Class looks a massive downgrade from the current luxury of VTEC's leather first class?

No VTEC sets have been in traffic yet, so insufficient data to base an opinion on.

Any trains seen all have the GWR spec as defined by the DFT, this includes both 801 5 car sets which are for virgin currently at Doncaster.

I wouldn't take that image as gospel mate. Its just an impression of how the train "might" look. The final product will likely be different.

So what does a photo of a 3 year-old mock-up prove?
Exactly because from what I have observed in many cases is that the final product is a lot different to the "proposed" train at the beginning. A prime example was the IEP was an integrated bi-mode locomotive with a fixed rake of coaches and a driving saloon and trains that made up the rest of the train. The actual train is very different as it is a bi-mode passenger train with underfloor diesel engines and pantographs on the roof on the end driving trailers. So more passenger space and seating in place of a locomotive :).

I believe the mockup is correct. The seats appear to be similar to the TPE First Class seats, which by all accounts I find quite comfortable.

The Standard seats are in my experience (they are the same ones that were in the ScotRail AT200 mockup as 1st) are not quite as nice, but haters of high-backed seats will approve, the backs are quite low, about the same as original Class 158 seats if I recall.

800006 passing Gloucester on its way from Stoke Gifford to Worcester last night. Video shot by Mark Appleby.

And pictured further on in its journey at Charlbury station at about 23.30

There are pictures online of actual interiors on 800s, which are almost unchanged from the design studio mock-up, e.g.

Having had a look inside when an 800 stopped right in front of me on a trial run this week, there looks to be plenty of legroom and the seats look similar in design to the current GWR HST interiors. No idea what they are like to sit in, as I haven't actually sat in one.

The standard class seats are alright, being lucky enough to sit in one at Newton Aycliffe a few weeks back. The charging ports are pretty much the same as a MK3, but there is a tad more legroom, about the same as the priority access seats in the GWR MK3's. There is more room overhead, and I'm 6 ft exactly and can walk fine through the carriages. As for 1st Class, it looks very similar to standard (sadly) and could really do with better seats, especially since the price difference between standard and 1st is huge, and I wouldn't say it's worth it for what I looks like.
