I highly doubt that they wouldn't use rheostatic braking if the kit is there. There is nothing that stops the resistors being used whilst the powerpacks are on as the powerpacks merely function to provide power to the electrical traction circuits, so I can't see them not using it. It would also make it easier to setup the braking logic, rather than having to check power mode, receptivity of the OLE, and all the other factors, they can just set it to check the line and divert to resistor banks if necessary. Add in the fact that braking otherwise would involve using the disk brakes (which would wear out) and suddenly it looks like a very daft option

The DfT specified the train. Do you expect any different?

TS261 The IEP Trains must have a maximum service speed of at least 125mph and shall be able to achieve that speed on the whole of the IEP Network. The requirement to be able to operate at 125mph applies during operation in Standard Mode and Locomotive Hauled Mode
That pretty-much rules out braking, as only the air brakes would be available when hauled. In fact the spec. does not mention the service speed for bi-mode, other than that they do not have to reach 125mph. They have to meet the specified journey times, and the maximum sound levels in bi-mode are specified at 100mph (which implies that this is an achievable service speed, but not a maximum.)

You need to have some strategy for dissipate the heat though. Remember that energy cannot be deleted, only converted to a different form or transferred.

Yes you do, and the same laws of physics apply whether on diesel power or on electric power when the line is not receptive.

The resistor grids on the roofs of Voyagers and Meridians do not appear to have any forced cooling, but these are probably dissipating less power than they would have to on a locomotive. If they were underneath somewhere they would probably need fans to provide enough airflow. There's probably a sensor somewhere to trigger a change to disc braking if the resistors get too hot.

Worth adding that the 22x resistor grids are probably less densely packed than most grids, hence they don't require any forced cooling.

On the new Hitachi place in Doncaster will it be of a operator who will run these for example bounds green is to ECML or Virginia now or will it just be Hitachi or even one of the leasing company's like porter brook ??

It's Hitachi who are contracted to provide a minimum number of trains in service each day? Much the same as with the Siemens contract for the Thameslink Class 700 from what I know.

Reports suggest that testing passed without incident.

I still find it weird that it was regularly coupled to 47714 during testing. Felt like seeing a vision of the future in which 47714 hauled GEML 801s to Great Yarmouth during the summer :P

Variations to base IEP specification for the East Coast IEP revealed in franchise agreement.

Secretary of State ordered variations
Reduction of kitchen on five car sets from 6 meters to 5 meters to add a further 3 first class seats.
Pantograph camera on all sets.
Installation of a speed limiter that limits speed to figure input by the driver (looks to refer to ERTMS functionality).

Don't know why they'd bother when we each always carry a charger and cable ;) The cost shouldn't even be a drop in the ocean, I don't see why they wouldn't fit it from the get-go...

It won't be that long until all people need is USB ports, allowing the charging of phones, watches, tablets AND laptops (the new MacBook being perhaps the first).

If you had the type that can output 5V, 9V and 12V at varying amps (based on what the device itself asks for) then you're pretty much sorted and having two or even more ports would be more useful than someone having to bring a transformer (seems like a waste of space in a bag).

For the short term, people will still carry power adapters but I do think that in time they'll become rendered obsolete. Even homes will hopefully get USB ports fitted within power sockets, and offices the same.

Thus, it seems rather odd to limit the USB ports to first class.

It won't be that long until all people need is USB ports, allowing the charging of phones, watches, tablets AND laptops (the new MacBook being perhaps the first).

I'd say the Microsoft Surface 3 is the first. It can be charged via its Micro USB port. I appreciate it's a tablet with detachable keyboard, but it is Intel based and runs full Windows so I'd say it's valid.

I'd still class that as a tablet, and I think Apple announced the MacBook slightly before (not entirely sure now).

But, yes, that's another example. I've got a Surface Pro 3, but the Surface 3 is an excellent device for the money.
