As a Windsor branch commuter, it would actually be a net gain in capacity as the shuttle has been limited to two coaches for some time now. I believe it's due to an issue with the DOO monitors at Windsor & Eton Central, but I think I heard that from somewhere else on the forum, so am happy to be corrected if the situation has changed.
Two coaches is fine for most of the day, except for the 08.30 from Slough in the morning, and the hour from 4pm to 5pm. The shuttle can't be longer than three coaches* because of the platform length at Windsor & Eton Central (there is a spare coach length of platform, but it is fenced off and would require rebuilding to be brought into passenger use).
*During events I believe it runs as a double set, but with extra staff on board as the rear door is off the end of the platform. I haven't actually experienced this first-hand so am not 100% sure.
Personally, I wouldn't mind a 230 on the Windsor shuttle - it has the same layover times as the Greenford shuttle, a shorter journey time, and, if all goes wrong and the 230 needs to be coaxed into a siding, it can be left in the old loop line at Slough, without needing to shunt across the main line. Though, obviously, they'd have to convert a few more of them first! I do hope this idea gets off the ground, but it's looking less and less likely. Which is a shame, because, much as I like the 150s and Turbos etc., I like the environment more!
