As for Middlesbrough station, whilst the town itself might not be the nicest place in the world (though I don't think it entirely deserves its reputation) the station is very nice, plenty of original architecture in evidence both inside and out, and as clagmonster says it has a very nice NER tile map as well. Shame the Luftwaffe decided to carry out some renovations 70 odd years ago or it would still perhaps have an overall roof.
The only bit of Middlesbrough I have ever seen is the walk from the station to the Riverside Stadium and back. Next time I go I'll wear something warm because it will be a cold day in hell when it happens
