We always count the DVT as a vehicle in the set. The 19.00 is going to be cosy with a load 9. That train has at least 100 standing with a load 10 on a Friday. Only hope is that a TSOB is in the formation.

I believe that that 06:48 ex-Norwich this morning (if on diagram will be the 19:00 ex-London this evening) was advertised as having an at seat trolley service only. It would have the same number of standard class coaches if an RFM was in the set but just less standing room !

Having travelled on the 19:00 before on a Friday, never again (and I had a seat!).

Shouldn't stop at Colchester. Always used to be first stop Manningtree until NX ruined the timetable. Took years to rid the 19.30 of Chelmsford.

I'd agree with that, there is plenty of capacity on the 18.48 (12x321) and 19.08 (8x321) from LST. Creates a 20 minute gap which would be unpopular, but sometimes unpopular decisions are needed.

8 carriage 321 appeared in Norwich today and that included the demonstrator

The short form GA 3 car set was out again top and tailed by 47s doing the Yarmouth run, did notice the DRS set in the sidings with the 37s detached

It's only 37402 & not been attached yet. Arrived with refurbed MKIIIs earlier this week.

Are they planning to run both sets then, the new DRS set and the current one

Seems odd that there is only one 37, surely time wouldn't allow a run around in Yarmouth

Will only be one 37 when the DBSO arrives. Until then will be top&tail 47s as now. Norwich crews have not been trained on 37s or trained/refreshed on DBSOs yet. Will be nearer Summer TT change when full working commences.

Who would have benefited more from our 322s? Northern or GA, was just curious

I've got an engineering degree if that helps this argument?!!

You may take exception but you may also not have to suffer the consequence of GA's shortsighted approach to handing back units it needed on a daily basis. The Mk3s are in a state with no capacity to cover the latest round of overhauls, 321s needed go cover the gap from a fleet that already struggles.

As 87015 has said reliability is now pretty grim including the Mk3 sets, more units stopped more short formations. I'd rather stand on a 12 car 317/7 than try and wedge into a short formed bin set.

Race to the bottom is about right.

I have suffered the consequences, I have been on some very ugly peak-hour trains. Reliability will improve with better weather and when the refurbishments are finished :)

156416 has today travelled ECS from Norwich Crown Point to Wolverton for refurbishment and PRM work, this is the last class 156 to be done.

156417 is already at Wolverton and is half through its refurbishment and PRM work and should be finished in around 4/5 weeks.

This means GA currently have 153314, 156416, 156417 out of service - plus any 170s that are out of service for maintenance or damage repairs.

The diagramming for the Sprinter fleet is:

class 153 - 4 diagrams for 5 units (1 spare for maintenance).
so they are technically running 3 units a day instead of 4, I presume the spare unit for maintenance will be back in service ASAP each day depending on any issues with the unit.

class 156 - 7 diagrams for 8 units (1 spare for maintenance).
so they are technically running 4 units a day instead of 7 with, I presume the spare unit for maintenance will be back in service ASAP each day depending on any issues with the unit.

Good they are finally doing 156416, it's external paintwork is in an appalling state :P

I wonder if it was intentional sending 321448 to Norwich because it has air-con and better seating, including some 2+2 seats. If it was, kudos to GA but it could well have just been in the right place at he right time.

Yup, it was deliberate. Slight hiccup saw a pair of 321/3's go this morning, but some shuffling of the pack will see 321448 finish at Orient Way tonight ready to kickstart tomorrow with 1P04 06:25 ex LST.

Now doing 06.50 Sov-Lst then back to the Car Sheds.

Obviously I understand that this is neccessary for certain things (staff knowing how long the total consist is for fitting in platforms, for example) but to advertise it as being a 10 car formation including the DVT to passengers does strike me as slightly misleading!

In that case should we announce the DRS short set as 2 & a half when it starts? ;)

That's being worked on to get it removed, but it's proving somewhat difficult.

that's fine for regular passengers, but "training" occasional passengers is rather harder.

Get so many who tell me they are reserved in coach A. After telling them that they must be a bicycle I check the ticket which shows seat 35A for example. This means seat 35 Airline style & next to that it states 'Coach C'.

they're unlikely to be regular users. You can't train them. The continued inclusion of that "A" on trains where all seats are individually numbered (no 46F and 46B for example) is yet another "legacy" feature that can only add confusion.

Though yes, the bit saying "coach" is bloody obvious.

Just need to train the punters better & let them know that's how it is like or lump.

Or maybe just provide the service the 'punters' pay for. Standing on a train home after a days work is no ones idea of fun.

So say loads and loads of people want to board the 17.50 and the train would need to be 25 coaches long for everyone to get a seat how is the TOC possibly supposed to provide seats for everyone on the train? It quite clearly state in the National Rail Conditions of Carriage that you pay to be transported to your destination, you do not pay for a guaranteed seat unless you have a specific seat reservation.

I think you are missing the point somewhat - The TOC has committed to provide a timetabled service with rolling stock in their Bid, in this case the TOC is consistantly providing short trains - is it therefore acceptable for passengers to short pay ?

At what point does a service provision become unacceptable ? - say GA provided 4 car trains instead of a 12 car on every one of its services and suddenly said - well it's the passengers fault for all wanting to travel at the same time. Is this acceptable ?

If the TOC only has so many coaches but has to send some of those coaches of for essential maintenance what option do they have except short form or replace the intercity set with an 8 car 321?

I think you are missing the point as well. The intercity sets are popular because they take like 10 mins less to Colchester, people all crowd onto those services then complain they don't get a seat, even though the train would have to be like double the length for all to get a seat.

Another one bites the dust today after an incident outside Bury station involving and individual and a push bike

Don't know all the details but the train was shunted in Bury at 5mph after the incident

Hopefully this one should just need cleaning down.

Great job with the Upminster branch today, 315838 broke on the first trip and is still stuck down the branch having been detained a few hours later.

Now on attempt two to rescue, 16 cars down the branch in one go must be a record!

I was about to post something about this. What exactly is going on that has taken all day to rescue one train?

Fitters where sent to the original failure but unable to repair so passengers detrained. Due to nearby neutral section an 8-car was sent from Ilford to assist. This then also failed with one pan in the neutral. Yet another unit was sent from the Car Sheds & eventually the 16-car formation was finally shifted off the branch. One of those days I think.

Thanks, sounds like a fun day for all involved!

Another question, why was an 8-car sent to recover it and not a 4-car?
