Fitters where sent to the original failure but unable to repair so passengers detrained. Due to nearby neutral section an 8-car was sent from Ilford to assist. This then also failed with one pan in the neutral. Yet another unit was sent from the Car Sheds & eventually the 16-car formation was finally shifted off the branch. One of those days I think.

An 8 car was sent from Ilford, seems strange

8 car was used as a if a 4 car was used, it'd stop with a Pantograph in a Neutral section, thus rendering it useless... it turned out useless as an 8 car set anyhow, by the seems of it.

Thanks, sounds like a fun day for all involved!

Another question, why was an 8-car sent to recover it and not a 4-car?

As I stated it was because of the close proximity of a neutral section. Other could always pan-up & pull clear. Thing didn't go according to plan though.

Having seen 170272 at Ipswich this evening, this unit will need to spend some time at the depot having the newly applied "livery" removed.

I cant account for the GE side but on the west anglia we have had dozens of failures recently related to GSMR radio. Basically there has been a software upgrade accross alot of the fleet and according to our fitters there were still bugs in the update which causes a GSMR failure code to arise which in turn makes the unit unfit for service. Ive had more train failures recentley due to GSMR problems than I have in past 5 years with other problems combined. 2 weeks ago there were four in one day on the 315s.

You didn't upgrade to 3.4 en masse did you?
