Yes, it was used during the Chorley Arches works...

When the chorley arches where being done, services where being terminated short at Chorley (2tph), sent via Bolton & Wigan 2tph, via Atherton 1tph, and all the Lancaster services went via the Chat Moss, so yeah, I'd expect the chat moss route to be used during diversions.

Hopfully TfGM will engage their brains and have more and longer services calling at Atherton with Rail tickets being accepted on buses between Atherton and Bolton, with more frequent services being provided, and continuing to Bolton Interchange rater than Moor St Bus Station.

I get the feeling there might need to be block closures when the Farnworth Tunnels need doing...

On further thought, how difficult would it be to re-instate a curve between the Atherton line and Lostock Junction.
Here

Maybe (wishful thinking) extend it up to blackrod so that wholesale closures are a possiblilty, or pair in the old curve that loops round at Lostock.

If the Atherton line could take 6tph then it would be helpful to have 2tph to Bolton and 2tph up to Preston, during closures between Bolton and Salford Crescent

Coming from the Wigan direction, there are the two existing routes at Crow Nest Junction that serve the lines through Bolton and Atherton. There used to be a third route, branching off to the left that you can still see the line of the railway from its earthworks. This line eventually met the line to Chorley, just past the area of Lostock Junction. This is the only disused line in that immediate vicinity. I have a feeling that you are looking for a different route to my historical clarification, but I thought I would let you know what this disused line was.

You are looking to come from the Manchester direction, not the Wigan direction. I have researched proposals for your route in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway archives that I hold, in the hope that I might have found some references on whether or not your line proposal may have been tentatively discussed, but have found nothing.

Yeah, done some digging and it would be a new (and useful) curve. Depends on how much theres going to be in the world of closures...

My wife and I were visiting in Westhoughton today, so I persuaded her to drive to the area where your "map" suggests for a link from the line from Daisy Hill towards Crow Nest junction to the Westhoughton bound line.

The land is mainly fallow, so the purchase price would be that paid for agricultural land. There is a minor road, Jacks Lane, that leaves the A58 and proceeds to cross over both stretches of these lines, that would require diversion, as it lies on the line of your projected curve.

I trust that this information is of help with your deliberations on this matter.

Without reading all of this if the Yorkshire to Warrington service is stopping it will pee off a lot of rugby fans.

Yorkshire - warrington central will stop under the northern hub planns where they will go via newton instead.
However, these will likely be replaced by extending the hull - manc trains to chester. As there is an asperation for more chester - manchester trains. This would run via warrington bq
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
ps. This is more to do with the northern hub than the electrification
