I think it depends on the business. It was fine for their airline, as planes aren't generally that late and when they are - you have a load of accepted reasons, like weather, congestion or whatever.

For cans of cola and other items, it can be amusing. It's harmless. A little joke on the side of a bottle that you notice one day and it makes you chuckle.

For trains, this is something that can go wrong a lot. It can make people miss appointments, flights and generally have a crappy day. It's hard to get the right balance, and when things go wrong nobody wants to hear a joke even if they might ordinarily find it funny.

Striking a balance is difficult, but I considered this to be quite a mild, inoffensive piece of humour. Certainly some of the other instances of "humour" are poorly thought through and I would say are no help at all in difficult situations with passengers in that they are likely to just rile them.

I agree, I thought it was funny. And if it's relating to a timetable, it's fine. Less fine when you're posting memes and animations on Twitter/Facebook etc whilst you have people stranded during major disruption.

Their Twitter page is a right piece of work

My partner finds the "go on, give us a smile" on the toilet mirrors offensive in the extreme. As a medical professional, she's regularly dealing with patients suffering from depressive illnesses and their sometimes dreadful consequences. As she comments, "how dare anyone presume to know what sort of day someone else is having".

Jokey announcements must be really hard for people whose English isn't great. You're trying to pick out some keywords over a crackly, static-hissing speaker and you're actually listening to a joke about how awful Bournemouth is.

I had a conductor/OBS/whathaveyou on a London Victoria to London Bridge service a few weeks ago who added a bit of colour to station announcements ("This is for the guys and girls of Gypsy Hill", "brilliant Brockley") which was interesting and different without overwhelming, or losing useful information.

Depression is a very destructive illness, you would have thought that Virgin would have known better considering that they also have dibs in healthcare too (Virgin Care).

Found this somewhat entertaining notice at a few points on the Southern network recently.

Quite entertaining given the experiences that are well documented on these very forums. :/
