That's certainly quite a different day! I bet your dad was well chuffed getting 43182 in, and well glad you did the run for that train!

Bristol has one attraction in particular for me still, the Harbourside Railway. Never seem to get time to do it! SS Great Britain does look worth a look mind.

Dad was really glad to get 43182 in for haulage.

I do like the look of the Harbourside Railway but I am guessing I won't be able to do it any time soon. Shame really, It looks good.

The SS Great Britain is definitely worth a look. It is really good.

Just to say I am away for the weekend (leaving at about 11:00) in North Yorkshire. I was going to go for the gala but due to the shambles, I have decided to go for a West Yorkshire day Rover instead. And I might as well say now that some time in July/August I have a big trip coming up which will hopefully knock down my required East Coast stuff considerably. Can anyone guess what it is? A North East Rover (4 in 8).

A West Midlands Day Ranger

I decided I wanted to get out on the bash and get a few more of my London Midland units in the book so on the 11th of April, 2 days after the trip to Bristol, I called up Nathan to ask if he was free to do a West Mids Day Ranger which would include a trip to Hereford on a tram. He agreed to come and mum picked up Nathan on the way to the station and got there in good time for the 09:25 to Moor Street which came in as double duds 168112 and 172102. All Chiltern 168s are duds until the 170s come in. But they aren’t really 168s. As I write this report, my mileage on 168112 is at 99.50 meaning all that would be needed to clear it for 100 miles is a Snow Hell leap (from Moor Street). I spent the ride down talking to Nathan and about half an hour later we were getting off the units at Birmingham's nicest station, ready for the walk to New Street.

The barriers were open, much to my surprise and after about 5 minutes we were entering the main concourse. Nathan still wanted a ride on a 390 by himself as the last time he tried that I ended up on his train as it was a winner so this time he chose 10:30 to take to Coventry. Since it was a dud (I can't remember which one), I flagged it and while he headed over to board that one, I went to platform 11b and got on dud 323216 which was working the 10:12 to Longbridge, hoping for a winner back from Five Ways. Unfortunately after a tight connection I found out that my train back was another dud, 323214.

I didn't know what I wanted to do next yet. I could go and annoy Nathan by getting on his 390 or I could hang around on the Cross City line and see what shows up. That was a tough decision but after seeing that the 10:30 to Cardiff had a winner on, option 2 won and before I knew it I was sat on 170522, my first winner of the day. Just to see Nathan's reaction I texted him to say that I was on the 10:30 off New Street. Now this text was true. But I wasn't on the 10:30 that he was on. I was on a 10:30 going in the opposite direction. The text I got back asked if i was joking and if not why I got on the Pendo even though it was dud. I text him back saying that it was true but I was on the 10:30 heading towards University, not London. He didn't reply. By now, the 170 was approaching the Uni so I had to get to the doors to get out as quickly as possible because the connection is a very tight one onto the Nottingham bound one, which was pulling in as we were. I was the first one off the train and within 20 seconds was on my connecting service, winner 170105. It seems the run wasn't necessary, as the unit’s doors didn't close for about a minute after I had leaped on but you never know. The run back to New Street was the same as always and we arrived back at Hell 2 down at 10:47.

This gave me 3 minutes to see if the 10:50 to Euston was needed and sure enough it was! I managed to get on the rather full 390002 just in time. There was lots of people standing in each of the standard class coaches but listening to the PA when the guard is speaking really does pay off sometimes as he said that coach G was declassified so I got a nice seat for the 10 minute ride to Birmingham International. I called Nathan en route to ask what Pendo he was on back from Coventry but it was a few minutes late so he didn't know at that point. I decided that if I didn't see any winners heading back to central Brum before Nathan's train then I would wait for it. The plan wasn't needed though as the first thing I saw at Birmingham International was double winner 158s on the 11:09 to Holyhead in the form of 158828 and 158826. Easy to say I boarded and we left on time back to New Street.

Nat and I had arranged a meeting place when his 390 arrived so after I got off the Arriva units at The big black station I walked over to platform 4c to wait for him there. Luckily the train Nathan had got back from Coventry was dud for me so I didn't miss out on a winner there. We had plenty of time to get over to the platform for the 11:49 to Hereford, which we were to take as far as Worcester Foregate Street. The unit was dud 170633 but we managed to get good seats for the slow journey to Worcester. The journey was uneventful and I was glad to be getting off at the winner shack 40 minutes later. I scooped a winner 158/9 while waiting for the onward train to Hereford, and the only other train we saw before the tram rolled in was 172222 which terminated before working a train back to Dorridge. A single 2 coach is definitely not suitable for a journey of that length when they probably have 3 and 4 coach trains working from Stoubridge to Whitlocks End.

After what seemed like an hour, the ex Paddington train rolled in with dud 43133 leading and I later found out at Hereford that it was dud 43186 up back. Annoying. The route from Worcester to Hereford was quite scenic and all winner track after Great Malvern, which was a bonus. I spent the whole journey from Worcester stood in the vestibule getting tram thrash. It was over too soon but I still have the journey back for more thrash. Both of us were hungry by the time we arrived so we decided to go hunting for some food but luckily we didn't need to go far as there was a Morrisons just outside the station so 20 minutes later we were back at the station with lunch.

After lunch I headed over to the ticket office to try and get an upgrade to first class on the WAG for my trip in June but the lowest price the ticket clerk could find was an upgrade for £21. Yorkie on this forum said that he got them for much cheaper so I said thanks for his help but I was going to try and find it cheaper elsewhere. He asked if he could help with anything else so I took that opportunity to get out my Great Escape voucher for that Thursday and asked if I could get it for just a child (as I had to print out a form for a child and an adult). He said that was fine and after getting my tickets sorted, I headed back over to Nathan and sat down for about half an hour waiting for the tram to return. When it came back in, we got back on the same set as earlier and got to the windows in coach B. I sat down for a bit after departure from Ledbury but after Colwall I was back up getting some thrash. It was a shame to have to leave them at Worcester Shrub Hill.

The plan was to get the 16:14 Great Western 158 back to Foregate Street to meet the 170 back to Brum there so we just had to wait on the same platform for a while before we saw the unit coming around the corner and much to our surprise it was South West Trains 158888 on hire to FGW! A winner too. The seats were really comfy on it and it was tough to leave them about 2 minutes later at Foregate Street for the London Midland unit back to New Street. Luckily the 170 back was a winner, 170502. But it was quite full because it was a 2 coach and there were a lot of people waiting for it. Nathan and I managed to get seats though so we were comfy enough for the ride back. Nathan decided to go for another 390 ride to Birmingham International when we got back to New Street. Since the 390 he was on was a dud, I hung around New Street but due to a shambles on the Cross City line a lot of services were caped so I actually ended up going nowhere in the time Nathan was gone. But, once again, his 390 back was dud.

After Nathan had arrived back, we both wandered over to Moor Street together and got on the first Snow Hell bound 172, which was in the hands of dud 172335. The reason we decided to head to Snow Hill in the end was because there is always a huge crowd waiting to get on the service at Moor Street but you are almost guaranteed a bay of 4 if you board at Snow Hill and sure enough, we managed to get the best seats on 168003. The bay of 4 right at the back (or front) of the unit.

Half an hour later it was arriving back at Leamington so we walked over to the car and got in for the ride home.

Sounds like you enjoyed your adventure to my neck of the woods! I was no doubt working on the other side of town when you came to Hereford, depending which day it was.

You thought it was a slow journey to Worcester? Trust me it's worse doing Moor Street to Worcester via Kidderminster, and New Street to Worcester via Bromsgrove is fast compared to the rest of the journey to Hereford! Sounds like your luck with 390s is about as good as mine is usually

A solo 172/2 is a little unusual on journeys to Worcester, when they come down it's always in pairs normally. Can only assume a failed train was the cause.

Bring on the 168/3s I say, something else for me to get in the Midlands! Mind you, also bring on the new line to Oxford Parkway!

158888 gets around, I had that unit yesterday coming back from Waterloo (attached to 2 other 159s to make a 8-car set)

Sounds like a good day :)

The day was a Saturday.

I guess the journey to Worcester isn't too bad and you are definitely right about it being much slower via Stourbridge and Kiddy. I agree there but having the run to Hereford on an HST makes it feel quicker! For the winner 390s, it depends on the trip. I might have some where every 390 I get is a winner but others where I get none.

Hopefully the ex TPE 170s (I'm not ready to call them 168/3s yet) will stray to Leamington a lot so I will get them for haulage quite quickly.

Wow, I didn't know you ever got 158s at Waterloo! You must have been quite happy to get an 8 car set!

Definitely would have been at work then!

I've had some very slow HST runs between Worcester and Hereford, but aye generally having an HST makes it so much more bearable!

Better than a single 159, that's for sure (or even a double 159) :)

How do you find the seats in the SWT 158s?

Definitely would have been at work then!

So you wouldn't have been far at all!

Agreed. Much better to have an HST than have a unit for a long journey. (imagine a diesel unit on a run like Padd-Penzance, or Kings Cross-Iverness/Aberdeen)!

In terms of SWT DMUs, the seats in the 158s are better than the 159/1s but not as nice as the original 159/0s

Although all the seats are nice for long trips.

Ok then.

I could have sat in that 158 seat all the way to Malvern and back easily!

I guess it is an excuse to come to the Chilterns again and get a lot more cats in the book too! I guess it helps that the Heart of England is Valid to Banbury on them as that would help maximise mileage!

Here is the next report. Sorry it took so long!

A London Midland Great Escape

I had had this trip planned for about a week after printing a form off for it and getting it redeemed at Hereford station on the 11th while doing a West Mids Day Ranger. I had a vague plan for the day, starting at Rugby. So with my alarm set for 07:30 I went to sleep.

On the morning of the 16th of April, I got out of bed and went though my usual morning routine before leaving home at 09:00 bound for Rugby. My plan had me on the 09:53 from Rugby to MK where I would pick up the 10:22 from there. The 10:22 was an ex New Street service and is actually scheduled to leave Rugby 20 minutes before my service, but since it goes via Northampton my train was quicker. Luckily the 53 minutes past was on time meaning I should easily make my plus 8 at Milton Keynes but the dez was dud 350123, last had on a complete stagger from New Street to Coventry coming back from a trip to Liverpool. The train was quite full but I managed to get a bay of 4 (on the left hand side) although there was someone already in it. Other than that, the journey to MK via Weedon was uneventful and it wasn't too long before I was getting off at the last stop before London for that train.

Once at MK, I crossed over the footbridge and waited for my onward train, noticing a 12 coach 350 arrive on the terminator with 2 350/3s, 350375 being one of them (my penultimate 350 for sight). About a minute after that had arrived winner 350104 rolled in on the service to Euston. I got a bay of 2 on the right hand side for the journey to Watford and other that seeing 92038 in Bletchley yard there was not much of interest about and a long 35 minutes later it was arriving at Watford Junction.

I baled and immediately headed down to the ticket office to get my ticket on the WAG for the 12th of June upgraded to 1st class from Causton on the forum. He was very helpful and 10 minutes later I was back up on the platform with my new tickets, waiting for the 11:26 to Tring. The reason I was going to take this service was because there was a +10 at Kings Langley onto a pair of 321s back up and I wanted to get a bit of mainline 'Dusty Bin' action before they head up to Scotland. I was also going to do the St Albans Abbey branch but you can never have enough 321 mileage (can you tell that they are my favorite unit?). My dez to the winner shack was dud 350118. I wasn't on it for long and soon I was back out in the fresh air waiting for a couple of Dusty Bins. They arrived on-time with winner 321416 leading dud 321415 and I made sure I got a good seat in 321416 for the ride back to Watford. Once I was back at Watford, I walked the million miles to platform 11 for the St Albans train and due to platform 11 being so short, I had to confirm it as winner 321417 using the coach number.

I got a bay of 4 on the very lightly loaded 321 for the ride up the fairly dull branch line. If felt like a long time but listening to the Dusty Bin made it a little nicer. The return journey is only 37 minutes but felt so much longer than the journey on the dez from Milton Keynes. That is probably because on the dez I was able to watch the 390s, other 350s and whatever else was there, instead of trees, a station and then just another row of trees until the next station. The St Albans Abbey branch would definitely be good for one kind of spotter though. A vegetation spotter! Anyway, it is very safe to say that 321s are much better on the mainline than little branch lines coming out of Watford. I was definitely glad when I got back to my starting location.

Thankfully I didn't have too long too wait before my train back to MK arrived as winner 350241. Neat coincidence that the 12:41 to Milton Keynes is dez 241 (for those of you who don't understand, take the time it is scheduled to leave Watford and take the 1 at the start away). The time flew by and the 40 minutes journey time felt only like 10. I wish that would happen when I am sat on Cross Country 170s. But that isn't how it works. For me it seems to work that the journeys I hate on units I hate seem to go really slowly but when I am on a journey I like with a loco or something it seems to go really fast. Anyway, as I said in what felt like no time at all I was getting off at Milton Keynes for the 2nd time that day. I had a +4 here onto my next train which was winner 350117.

This was on the 13:25 service bound for New Street. I alighted a quarter of an hour later at Northampton. I have had this station many times before, most of which were on London trips from Rugby where the train has been caped here and all of the passengers from the 8 coach dez were thrown onto an already full 4 coach dez. That is how I remember Northampton anyway. My train back to MK was already in the other platform but it wasn't scheduled to leave for another 9 minutes so I taken a look at the new concourse before heading down to the platform for my next train, dud 350114.

The journey back was an uneventful as the journey there (very uneventful) and a few minutes later we were arriving back at Milton Keynes. I had 15 minutes until my next train so I popped outside the station to grab lunch from Greggs before heading over to the platform for the 14:19 to Crewe. This service should be a 350/3 so while doing my plan I decided to tie in a return to Rugby on a couple of 350/3s.

My first of the new LM 350s rolled in on-time with 350373 so I grabbed myself a right hand side seat in the front coach to eat my lunch (a chicken bake and a custard slice). It arrived at Rugby a couple of minutes late (as always) but I had 10 minutes until my train back was due so there was no worries there. But 10 minutes passed and there was still no sign of any 350 and the PIS screen still said that my train (the 14:53 to Euston) was on time. In the end winner 350371 arrived about 5 minutes after it was meant to leave before setting off down the WCML via Weedon.

Once again I got off at Milton Keynes and just like this morning I crossed over to platform 1 ready for the 15:22 to Euston which was in the hands of winner 350263. I took this to Berkhamsted a station 25 minutes down the line in order to get the 15:55 service to Tring. Berkhamsted certainly looked different not covered in snow (that is how I remember that station as the last time I was there it was early February 2015) but there isn't much to do there for 10 minutes while waiting for another train to appear. An EWS 66 came through with a London Overground 378 coach while I was there so at least I managed to see something while waiting. My onward train rolled in 1 down as dud 350107.

I got a seat for the very short run to Tring where I had another 10 minute fester for my next train. The reason I had chosen Tring is because it was a good connection onto a 12 coach 350 and 2 of the units should be 350/3s. In fact they should be the 2 I saw at MK before boarding 350104 earlier in the day. My train arrived on time (at 16:10) with triple winners 350102, 350377 and 350375. Why this service needs 12 coaches is unknown as if the people in the train were evenly distributed there would be 1 in each coach. But I did get my own coach in 375, which was nice, but I couldn't enjoy it for too long, as I had to get off at Berkhamsted 4 minutes later.

Another 10 minute wait and I was on dud 350110 leading winner 350247. My plan had me on this to Leighton Buzzard but since I had time I continued to Bletchley deciding to take the first available back to Leighton Buzzard. It was dud for the day 350117 but on its journey to Brum it had found itself a friend in the form of winner 350101. I took this pair to Leighton Buzzard, ready for my last train of the day which arrived about 5 minutes later (at 16:58) with dud 350125 and dud for the day 350107 with winner 350251 sandwiched in the middle. I was on this train for less than 5 minutes as my stop was the first one up and a winner shack, Cheddington.

I saw dad over at the car park so I ran over to him and got in the car to head for dinner at a pub on the way home. The only reason I could finish at Cheddington is because it was on dad's way home from work so he could easily stop off to pick me up. After a great meal and a rant at the pub we got back in the car for the journey home.

Overall, a really great day!

Definitely agreed on the 321s being far better on the mainline than the St Albans Abbey branch! They're not much better on the Braintree line to be honest!

Good day had there though! :)

Thanks guys!

My North East Rover dates are for the 1st of August (travel up) to the 8th of August (travel back).
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
A Saturday spin to Sheffield

The only reason for this outing was because Vintage Trains had caped the tour to Brighton on the 30th of May due to favoring a steam tour (which was then caped anyway!) Because of this we could extend the boat trip (which started on the 18th of May) but I wanted to get out on the rails some time soon and with the tour gone I decided to head out on the 16th, with Nathan so he wouldn't miss out.

Mum dropped us off at Leamington for the 08:23 to Brum and after buying a return to Nottingham, we headed up to platform 2 for super dud 168003 pulling dud 172103, this move making it a super dud. We sat in the 168 (because the interior is a lot nicer than the 172) for the ride to Moor Street where we arrived on time. The walk over to New Street was uneventful and 5 minutes later we were walking through the main entrance and towards platform 10A. Winner 170107 was due to leave about 10 minutes at 09:19 but that time came and passed and we still hadn't left. 5 minutes later it was still sat in the platform and finally it pulled away 11 minutes late at 10:30.

We were still 10 late by Burton but departure from Derby was only 3 late due to the reversal being very quick. Derby RTC housed a winner 66 (66753) but other than that, a couple of Peds, an ED and a pair of tractors there wasn't much. Between there and Nottingham I managed to miss the number of 2 class 60s. By Nottingham we hadn't made up any time since Derby but with arrival at 10:31, there was enough time to get a return to Meadowhall before the EMT 158s that we were to take to Liverpool were due. The 158s EMT had provided for the job were double winners 158788 and 158777, with the front unit (nearest the stairs) quite full and the back one pretty much deserted. It was an easy choice of which unit to sit in.

The journey north was very dull as the route was definitely not the nicest and also didn't have too much of interest at all. No. In fact it had nothing of interest at all. After what felt like a very long journey, I was glad to get off at Sheffield, a winner shack. I taken a look at the departure board and saw that there was a 10:41 service to Scarborough, which would almost definitely be a 158 so I could take it to Meadowhall. Nathan decided to come with me and a couple of minutes later we were leaving Sheffield on obvious winner 158844. This is obviously a winner because I had never had a Northern 158 before. En route to Meadowhall, we passed a cement train with a freightliner 66 up front but other than that all we passed was a dud Northern 142. Once we got to Meadowhall, the first thing we did was check the departure board to see when the next few services were due. We saw that the next service was due off platform 1 so that is where we waited, seeing a very unexpected Cross Country HST race past while waiting.

The train to Sheffield off platform 1 was a winner, 158907 and loads of people got off it here. And by loads, I mean about 3/4 of the people on the train. I was beginning to get hungry now so I popped to Burger King to get something before going back over to the platform for the 12:18 service back to Meadowhall in the form of winner 158860. Once we were at Meadowhall again it was time to head to the trams so we headed over to the tram stop at Meadowhall and boarded my first ever Sheffield Supertram, 103. We bought a day rover on board the tram and took this tram to Granville Road after getting the PSUL curve in. It was a 10 minute wait until another tram came, this one on a Halfway bound service so we boarded winner tram 101 for the ride to the end of the line, to get some winner track.

The journey was very long and tiresome but most of the journey was along the road, which was nice. I don't really want to do that journey for a while! Once the tram arrived at Halfway, I got off to take a few pictures before getting back on the same one to take this time to Gleadless Townsend. The plan was to get off here so we could get the branch to Herdings Park in so we didn't need to head down to get that again for a while. It was a wait of about 15 minutes at the little shack next to the busy road but we weren’t the only people to board the tram there. The journey from Gleadless to Herdings Park on winner 104 took 2 to 3 minutes with a stop between the 2 stations but after getting to Herdings Park and looking at the timetable I got very irritated to see that there was 20 minutes until the tram was going to leave again. Nat and I spent the time chatting to an HNRC driver though so it was nice to chat while waiting for 104 to leave again towards Sheffield. We took the tram all the way to it's terminus at Sheffield station before heading down to the platforms to do a bit of spotting before out train to Nottingham arrived.

There was a Northern 158 to Notts before the EMT one I had planned but because it was rammed we decided to go for the ex Liverpool service. This came in on time as duds for the day 158788 and 158777 but I fell asleep on the journey to Nottingham so it meant that I didn't feel the time. Nathan had stayed awake and said that nothing had passed except a few units so I didn't miss anything. Once we got to Nottingham we headed over to our next train, the 16:32 to St Pancras which was winner 43048 leading dud 43050. The race down to Leicester (window hanging of course!) was fun but the 20-minute wait at Leicester for the Brum bound 170 wasn't. During this time I went to the WHSmith on the platform as I needed a drink before getting on a Cross Country turbo for an hour. After that we just hung around on the platform wanting to limit our exposure to Cross Country.

A seat was found 5 minutes before departure on super-dud 170522 which we were sat on all the way to Brum. The plan was to catch the 18:43 from Snow Hill back to Leamington, but Nathan didn't think I knew the way from New Street to Snow Hill (I do!) so we had to walk over to Moor Street for super-dud 172344 to Snow Hill before crossing over to the platform for the Marylebone bound train in the form of another super-dud, 168001. The journey back was uneventful and not long after boarding at Snow Hell we were all getting into Jackie's (Nathan's mum) car at Leam.

Not as many Supertram winners as I had hoped for but that is because I had chosen to aim for winner track this time. Maybe next time I will go for the winners!

This one is fairly short (because it was a short trip) but I hope it is enjoyable :)

An afternoon on a West Mids Daytripper

We had been out on the boats for 5 days when I did this trip (on the 22nd of May). The reason I was doing this is because dad had something on in Solihull for this date and the boat was perfectly located in the center of Brum. After a morning in the Sea-life Center (way overpriced) and Birmingham Library (a brilliant building and well worth a visit), dad and I walked over to Snow Hell for the 14:12 to Marylebone which was super-dud 168219. 168219 may be super-dud but before this 7.25 miles it was only on 32.25 miles (made up from a Leam to Moor Street move and 3 Warwick Parkway to Leam hops) so getting it again was good. I ranted with dad until Solihull where we both got off the unit and after watching a Betty race by on a southbound liner (70015) dad had to head out into town. I stayed behind at the station waiting for my train back to Brum which arrived 8 minutes late at 14:52 (it departed at 14:53) with dud 68008. Typical really. It could have been 68011, 68014 or 67014 and it had to be the dud cat (the shovel would definitely be the best I could have but I had that for haulage 2 days before this trip).

The journey back to Moor Street was uneventful and we were shortly arriving 9 down. I was the first off the train and after getting through the barriers I began my usual run to New Street (soon it will be the New New Street!). Having already bought my Day Tripper at Snow Hell I went straight down onto platform 11 and got the first available 323 out to Five Ways, dud 323243. It wasn't until Five Ways I realized that it was a pair with winner 323211 on the back!

I quickly crossed over platforms and after less than a minute of waiting my train back to New Street (the 15:18) I boarded dud starship number 323207. Once back at Hell, I went over to platform 12 to see what was on the 15:30 to Cardiff and take it to Uni if it was a winner. Score! Winner 170109 was the unit in charge for the run to University where I had to make a mad dash over to platform 1 for the 10:39 to Nottingham. That is the only problem with the hops to the Uni on XC 170s; The connection at University is really tight if the Cardiff bound 170 is late, even by a minute, then the connection is very hard to make. Luckily I managed to make the connection onto another winner 170, 170519! I am doing well with the winners today (excepting cat 8).

Earlier that day I saw that there should be a winner 170 on the 15:49 to Hereford so I decided to try and make that my next move. As my 170 from University arrived at New Street I saw that there was a 153 now on the back of the 170 so that made me want to make it even more as I had only ever had 2 LM 153s for haulage. I was the first person to get off the 170 and i launched myself up the escalator and then down the stairs before running down the platform and leaping on the 153. Here is the bad bit. The units were winner 170503 but the 153, 153354 was a dud and I had already had 20.5 miles on it (a return from Coventry to Nuneaton). At least I got a winner 170 though which is all I was expecting. The train was full but I managed to get one of the fold down seats for the 2.5 mile journey back to The University of Birmingham.

Once there, I crossed over to platform 1 and flagged the first 323 due to it being dud. I then flagged a 170 due to it being dud but decided to go for the next starship whether it was dud or not as I would have a while to wait otherwise. After arrival at New Street, I headed back over to platform 11b ready for another 323 which was double set 323217 and 323213, 213 being a winner. I took this to Five Ways before coming back on dud 323216.

I had time to check if the 16:49 to Hereford had any winners on it and since it did I jumped aboard winner 170516 leading dud 170512. Just before University, I got a call from dad saying that he was on his way over to New Street (coming from Moor Street) so I decided to go for the first available from The Uni. This was double duds 170517 and 170634 and was very lightly loaded making the ride slightly enjoyable. I met up with dad at the usual spot (by the M&S) and we walked back to the boat via Tesco to get some food.

Some busy days indeed there! Agreed with the long trip to Halfway on Supertram, it does test your patience somewhat!

I remember the days when 158844 was a Welsh machine, and 158860 was a Wessex Trains one. Good grief that was a long time ago, I think 158860 had gone up to Northern way back in spring 2007!

Definitely!

I have never actually had a 158 before 2014. Happy days!

Tickets to get up and back to Yorkshire are now booked with first class on the Peterborough to Leeds leg (but not back from LDS-PBO). I timed my trains carefully so it should hopefully be an HST to and from Peterborough. With just a week to go I am really looking forward to this 7 day rover. The plan for the days are listed below.

Saturday: Travel up via Leeds (0823 LMS-BMO, 09:22 BHM-PBO, 12:23 PBO-LDS, 16:12 LDS-MLT)
Sunday: Stay with Grandparents
Monday: North East Rover begins
Tuesday: North East Rover
Wednesday: North East Rover
Thursday: North East Rover
Friday: North East Rover
Saturday: North East Rover and travel back home (14:40 LDS-PBO, 16:52 PBO-NUN, 18:36 NUN-RUG)

Enjoy your trip up to my neck of the woods, Im sure you'll enjoy it, if I can offer any local advice, don't hesitate to ask, even though there's a helluva lot more folk on here, more knowledgable than me.
If you do manage to get to Sunderland station to, you'll see what I meant about the comparison's with, your words not mine, Snow Hell:lol::lol:
Look forward to the trip report.

Thanks! I will probably stick to the HSTs/91s for most of the time as getting to Sunderland means either a likely 142 or the Metro which my ticket isn't valid on. I might get over there though!

No ride on a 156 over to Carlisle in your plans? Tyne Valley a lovely line too. Catch it right in the afternoon and you could get the ScotRail 156 on the Newcastle- Glasgow Central too, think it's 13.15 and 17.15 or near that, without checking.. Could always do a Metrocentre leap if your pushed for time, just a suggestion, who am I to alter your trip?. For food, Greggs just over the road from Central Station or walk up the lane to the left of Greggs theres a Subway, or walk straight up past it, that's called Pink Lane, go right to the top of Pink Lane turn right and theres a chippy, less than 5mins walk too.

The thought of being on a 156 for that long when there is trams available down the ECML doesn't really fill me with joy. I might try a Metrocentre leap on a couple of 156s (definitely no 142) but I probably won't take any of the long routes (such as S&C or the Tyne Valley).

Thanks for the food suggestions. They will come in very handy. Do you know if the chippy does donors?

Thanks!

Ok, if your after 142's to click off for sight, keep an eye out on the bottom bays on the right as you come into Darlington, Also after Durham left hand side for Tyne Yard, maybe a couple of Fred's, maybe a GB or DB shed parked up. If you go up to Berwick, right hand side for Heaton, about 3 mins outta Newcastle. Sorry if you already know this.
Food wise, definitely do mate, if your on about Donner Kebabs. Theres also a McD's about 10mins walk away, come out of Central Station, cross over the road, turn right past greggs, past the hotel, turn left, you'll see a statue of a guy, walk past him, cross the traffic lights and continue straight up that road and McDonalds is on the left, straight walk back the way you came, you can practically see Central when you come out of McD's.

Thanks! The annoying thing about Tyne yard is the big bridge that blocks the view. I will try and get up to Berwick as that would also be quite nice.

I will definitely try to head to the chippy for a Donner on one of the days for lunch.

Thanks again!

That big bridge used to be the old hump line, many many moons back, I cant ever remember it being used and I frequented Tyne Yard since the late 70's, (showing my age now:oops::oops:).
However your welcome, have a great time. The rover goes up to Berwick, shame to waste it, stretch your mileage too and if finaces/time stretch that far, may I suggest, a cheeky advance return from Berwick-Edinburgh;)

I'm sure we used to call that place Salmonella Express when I lived up there. First rate kebabs IIRC.
