There won't be another trip report for a while because tomorrow I am on my way to the north. But here is one for now.
June big bash day 1: The Wales Wanderer
Finally! The day had come. I had tickets for this trip sorted more than 2 months in advance and all of the non-optional moves for the first day were loco-hauled. I was really looking forward to first class on the WAG as the food sounded really good and it would be nice to meet up with a few forum members again. The date was the 12th of June, the first day of a 4-day trip (although the Sunday was just spending the day with Granny and Gramps) that went like this.
I woke at 07:15 to the sound of my alarm and immediately began to finish getting ready for the day (and the rest of the weekend) ahead. My train wasn't until 10:04 from Leamington but I wanted to be up in good time and get a bit of forum time in before heading off to the station. The 2 hours on the computer went by quickly and it wasn't long before I was sat in mum's car for the drive to Leamington for my first train of the trip.
After arriving at the station, I bought my ticket, a single to Moor Street and headed up to platform 2 ready for my loco to Brum. It arrived bang on time with dud 68011 roaring away up front for the journey to Moor Street. The driving was nothing special (for a good run on a 68 you need a good driver) but it was good enough that we didn't loose any time (although that would be pretty hard for a journey that is scheduled to take 38 minutes). It passed 66502 around Solihull but other than that I saw no other locos while on the familiar trip to Moor Street where we arrived on time. I exited the barriers and then called dad as I began to walk over to New Street to ask if he could see me away from New Street. He said he could and I only had 5 minutes to wait outside the M&S for dad to show up. His new job is in Birmingham so he takes the train to and from Brum every day (165 down, 68 back). It also means he could come down to see me off.
We headed over to platform 12 via M&S where dad kindly bought me lunch to eat later on and when we got to the platform it was only a wait of 5 minutes for the 11:17 to Plymouth to arrive. It did with the familiar sound of an HST. Even better hearing it arriving at New Street because the station is in a tunnel (does BHM count as a tunnel station?) I got on board, standing in the vestibule on the left hand side until we had left New Street so I could talk to dad and wave as we left the station with double duds (all Cross Country HSTs are duds) 43303 and 43357 providing the power.
It was a slow ride until Kings Norton where speed picked up as we were put onto the fast lines for the ride up the Northern Cross City line. I hadn't had the track after Blackwell towards Cheltenham in ages so it was nice to get that again, with a race through Ashchurch. 60010 hammered past a tank train somewhere around Cheltenham but 20305 and 37259 were the highlight of the trip. This pair was seen on a flask train coming off a branch somewhere around Yate. It was nice to watch the back of the train go around the corner at Westerleigh Junction before we joined the other track shared with FGW for the last 5 minutes of my enjoyable journey from Brum.
We arrived at Bristol Parkway 5 minutes late meaning I didn't have time to get to the ticket office before the service to Cardiff that I wanted to catch arrived perfectly on time. I went to find the guard before boarding to ask if I could by my onward ticket to Cardiff on the train. He told me to get on the train so I gladly boarded a mk3 with dud 43023 up front. It wasn't until Cardiff that I found out that the back unit was also a dud, 43087.
Unfortunately, when the guard came to me, he had nowhere to put my cash and the machine didn't want to accept my card (apparently it had been having problems all day) so he told me to go to the unpaid fares place at Cardiff Central. 56303 was seen just after Bristol Parkway with 70003 in Stoke Gifford. Apart from 66154, which was at Alexandra Dock, and quite a few trams, they were the only locos I saw on my train, which I got off 40 minutes later at Cardiff's biggest station. After getting the number of the rear power car, I went down to the subway and over to the unpaid fares desk and told the lady behind the counter what had happened and about a minute later I was going up to platform 1 for my first ever ATW service from Cardiff. The trains to Queen Street (Cardiff, not Glasgow!) are every 5 minutes but some services are 150s and others are 142/143s. Since I won't travel on any pacer, I had to wait for a 150 but since the first train had one on, I didn't need to wait long. Dud 150264 took me forward on the winner track (but not very much of it) to a winner shack at another of the 3 stations with Cardiff in it.
The first train to appear was a single 142, with the second being quite late, so I headed over to the bay platform and waiting about a minute for the Cardiff Bay shuttle to appear. The unit would obviously be a winner, as I had never even had an Arriva 153 before today. It came in with a refurbished one, 153327.
I took a seat on board and just after departure the guard came through checking tickets. At Cardiff Bay, I jumped off the train to shack scratch before getting right back on again. I counted this as a winner shack because the train terminated here and changed head-code before reversing and heading back to Queen Street. It wasn't too long to wait before another 150 appeared heading back towards Central but it was super-dud 150242 this 0.75 miles putting it up to 66 miles. Once again I got off Cardiff Central to wait for another 150 back out hoping for a winner this time. Luck struck! 150227, a winner, took me back out to Queen Street where I waited for at least 10 minutes for what I thought would be a pair of 142s/143s (because the announcer said formed of 4 coaches) but turned out to be a pair of 150s. I immedietly recognized the front number as a dud, 150230 which was previously had from Chester to Crewe but luckily the back unit, 150283 was required. I had seen an FGW 150/2 at Central earlier in the day so I knew it would head off in the Newport direction at 15:00 so I decided to aim for that. But after seeing that the 14:55 to Padd had a winner power-car on it, plans changed and I boarded for the leap to Newport on dud 43122 and winner 43056.
The race to Newport was fun (with window hanging all the way) but there was nothing at Alexandra Docks again and not long after boarding I had to get off again. It was a simple island platform change at Newport and I spent less than a minute on the platform because there was a Great Western tram due. It was another winner and dud combo, with the winner being up front with 43035 and the dud being 43005 at the back (I found out that it was 005 at Cardiff). Having asked on the forum if there were any double 150 sets in FGW at Cardiff I knew to try and get the 16:00 from Newport. This meant I needed to get either the 15:25 or the 15:30 out from CDF. Naturally I tried to get the 15:25 as that was a tram but due to my inbound service being a couple of minutes late, I missed the tram by a couple of seconds. My only other option here was to get my first ever First Great Western unit which was a 158, 158961.
I got a seat for the quarter of an hour journey before getting off again at Newport, which isn't the nicest of stations. I got a summer fruits Oasis from the buffet (as I was parched) while waiting for my train back which arrived about 2 minutes early with double winners 150122 and 150106. I got a seat in the rear unit, which like the London Midland and Northern 150/1s wasn't too nice but they were both winners. 15 minutes later I was back at the Capital city of Wales with an hour until my train away, the 17:16 to Holyhead.
I had time to do a Queen Street leap so I headed over to platforms 6 and 7, ready for a winner 150. The first train that appeared was a dud 150 so I flagged it. At the same time, a winner 150 arrived on platform 7. The next one was also a dud 150 so once again I flagged it and just like it had 5 minutes before, a winner 150 arrived on platform 7. Then the next 4 trains were pacers (where all of the trains on 7 were 2 winner 150s, a dud 150 and a winner 153). This really annoyed me as I now didn't have time for a very short leap and I had missed out on loads of winners. I got the little digi camera out of my bag to get a few photos and just after I had taken it out of its case, a 66 rolled through on a Steel train so I managed to get a photo of it along with a few photos of units. At ab
out 17:05, I headed over to platform 2, ready for my onward journey to Wrexham and at 17:10 the WAG came in with ex Chiltern and Wrexham & Shropshire 67012 on the front. I boarded the rear coach (First Class) and found the load of forum members. I hadn't met some of the them but I knew most of them. I took a seat on the right hand side and just after departure someone came through to take our orders. I got Leek and Potato soup with Welsh rarebit as a starter, pork, potatoes, veggies and gravy as a main and profiteroles with chocolate sauce. StickyNicky sat opposite me after Cwmbran and about 5 minutes after, my starter appeared and it was a very good size and very good quality meal. The main course came not too long after that and tasted equally good, if not better. It was good fun to talk with other forum members while having a very good bit to eat at a very good price (£12.50 upgrade for me+£9 to get to Wrexham). StickyNicky pointed out lots of areas on the marches such as good locations for photography or trainspotting and things like Moreton-On-Lugg level crossing. This was very nice and informative. Finally, a mountain of profiteroles appeared and dinner was finished about 10 minutes before Shrewsbury. We all continued chatting for the journey to Wrexham, except around Chirk where I popped up to the window to get a bit of trash from 'A Shropshire Lad' (that is how it will always be known to me even though it no longer carries the name). It was a shame to have to get off the train at Wrexham, where I got a call from my aunty who was waiting in the car park.
I got a few photos and a video of the shovel as it continued its journey north to Chester and then west to Holyhead. I headed over to my aunties car and got in for the short carr journey to Penyffordd where I would spend my night, ready for day 2...
