The British Grand Prix was won comfortably by Leclerc after a charge from Antonelli came undone... as a result of a piece of his bodywork that came undone.
I find myself once again rather puzzled by the Ferrari strategy during the Verstappen safety car. Pitting Leclerc from the lead, with his clear advantage over Hamilton in second, was understandable. But pitting Hamilton also... why? That was a second place that Ferrari sacrificed to Russell.

If the race had restarted after the safety car and Hamilton hadn’t pitted he would have been on older hard tyres versus Russell right behind on newer mediums. Whereas with the stop he was on fresh softs.
It’s not the stupidest bit of Ferrari strategy there’s ever been, but quite a miscalculation on the chances of the length of the safety car. Especially as following Abu Dhabi 2021, there’s now a rule about the safety car lasting a lap after the cars are released to unlap themselves.

I do wonder if it's possible instead to allow the lapped cars to slip back through the pack instead of having to charge round the track - to get to the exact same position... Is there something about the lap number calculations that would make this impossible and which could not be manually adjusted?
It could be achieved quite safely by an understanding, clearly established before the race, as to which side of the track the lapped cars would pull aside to and let the rest pass.

It was nice to watch a GP as the British Grand Prix is shown on council tv!
just have lapped cars pull into the pit until the safety car train has gone past them let them catch up. They can have a cheap pit stop at the same time. They go into lane 1 with a red light and any un lapped car can use lane two on a green light. easy.
it was a silly decision with so few laps left but Hamilton on new softs would have had Russell (with cold worn tires) on toast on even one racing lap imo ( AND Ferrari have been roasted so many times for NOT pitting under the safety car that I cant really blame them for doing so!
Antonelli got a track limits penalty - there as lots of chuntering about is but imo he DID gain an advantage as taking his own line allowed him to keep cars behind him and/or stop chasing cars cutting the gap.

If the safety car period occurs early in the race it means that the lapped cars will have done one lap less than the others. Not sure if that's fair or not.
David Coulthard suggested (I think he has a point) that if the safety car is at the end of the race, you just divert the lapped cars into the pit lane. They get their final position from when the safety car started. If they were also in the points, they wouldn't have the chance to improve their position in the last laps, but they had already been lapped, drive faster.

Not even that, if a safety car is needed within the last 10 laps then the race should be red flagged and restarted once the track is clear.

I hope the situation is reviewed, and a "red flag if the SC is needed <10 laps from the end" policy is considered. That was an awful way to end a race.

I dont think the FIA want a standing start though. I think the feeling is the rolling start after the safety car is withdrawn is safer. It certainly helps the race leader!
Rules allow for standing or rolling start after either of full SC or Red Flag, at race director’s discretion
And would the lap that they're on for a rolling start count?

Yes, I was thinking of at the end of the race myself; if it's near the start then the present procedure is fine.

Yes. Every lap after the parade lap counts. Giving backmarkers extra fuel by letting them run one less lap is inconsistent treatment to the field.

Imo, if you're able to go 43+ laps from lights out with full fuel load, and keep them alive that late into a race, you've earned that as far as I'm concerned. We're talking going from the start of the race to at best 34 laps at Spa (238 km), to at worst 62 laps at Zaandvort (264km) on a single set of tyres when the car is at its heaviest.
All laps would count just as they do now.
Process is already in the sporting regulations.
To flesh out an example of how it would work now within the current rules
Red Flag thrown on lap 50
Leader would enter the pits at the end of lap 50
Race suspended at lap 50/51 boundary
Track / Conditions made safe
Race resumption time given with 10 mins notice
Optionally, at race director’s discretion lapped cars given additional full course yellow laps to unlap themselves and rejoin formation in pit lane at end of “lap” 50
(Brazil 2023/2024? Piastri and Ricciardo were denied this opportunity which led to some ire)
Pitlane reformed as thus
Safety Car
Then in position order:-
Cars on lead lap (that completed 50 laps upon entry to pit lane)
Cars (previously) 1 lap down
Cars (previously) 2 laps down
etc
Safety car leads cars out onto track for formation lap (Lap 51)
Race director declares rolling or standing start, RS/SS in white with red border shown on trackside light panels and competitors informed through the official timing system
As per any safety car period, at the S2/S3 timing line lights on the safety car go out, Safety car bolts for pit lane, leader becomes pace car with SC delta time in force still
If SS declared, cars then form up on grid in order, start sequence takes place in normal manner and race resumes on lap 52
I really hate the red flag procedure being used just to provide a green flag finish. It feels like a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
Some other options. Rather than waiting for unlapping Indycar tells lapped cars to fall to the rear of the snake if it’s <10 laps from the end of the race. The BTCC adds SC laps to race length up to a maximum, the teams are told to fuel for these additional laps. NASCAR adds laps to the end of the race also, referring to it as overtime.

Problem with adding laps is that cars would run out of fuel as majority are underfueled at the start of the race for performance reasons. Most races except Monaco include the drivers doing some fuel saving during the race.
The INDYCAR way of telling them to fall to the back is a decent idea or you could get the lapped runners to go in the pit lane & wait until the leading cars have gone through then rejoining at the back

I hate the idea of a red flag in the last five laps for excitement purposes. It removes the legitimacy of the seriousness of a red flag.
I personally think that for a race that has a safety car, any laps that are undertaken to allow for unlapping of cars are added to the end of the race.
I would have had no issue with the Silverstone GP finishing under safety car if they were still removing cars from the barriers. But its that the track was clear and then 2 laps were taken to unlap cars.
In that case there should be no risk with fuelling, and the cars save a lot of fuel under safety car conditions.

Teams already fuel their cars based on the chance of safety cars. If a team (and they all do it) short fuel their cars because there is a higher chance of safety cars then adding more laps isn‘t going to help.
In other series the teams are told to fuel for potential additional laps, the BTCC does this. If they want to chance it then that’s their prerogative, the F1 teams already have far too much information, throwing a spanner their way now and then is a good thing. Doing that wouldn’t resolve the issue completely but it would allow for an additional lap for this situation. I agree it is easier in series with refuelling already.

Verstappens rear wing incident again shows the risk drivers are taking going into corners if the rear wing doesn't flip over correctly and provide anticipated down force. Not every circuit has such generous run off areas and FIA should be mindful about the risk some of these gimmicks are bringing to the sport in an attempt to spice up the racing.
