"UTC" is the same thing as GMT right?

In most of those places, no-one would have a clue what GMT means.

I suspect that an increasing number of young persons in the UK don't use the outdated expression 'GMT' as well. Maybe Brexit champions will promise to legislate its use from some future date.

What has Brexit got to do with anything. GMT is still used as a time zone just like every other country has their own time zone (or multiple) it's just GMT is no longer a time standard. GMT is still used for legal and social aspects within the UK.

Ah, a reasoned argument there.

For 13 years I worked for a company with sites and offices in numerous time zones from California in the west to Hong Kong and Australia in the east. Conference calls and virtual meetings often had people joining in from four or five time zones, some of which observed daylight saving (aka summer time) and some of which didn't. Even those that change do so on different dates - last week Europe was back on winter time but the US stayed on summer time until last night, so the difference between here and the US was an hour less than usual.

The only way to keep control was to schedule all non-local calls and meetings in UTC, as everyone knew their own current offset from that.

There's nothing to stop you staying in your own Anglo-centric bubble, but don't expect international organisations like F1 to do so. Especially as it's now owned by Liberty Media, which is not based here.

In other news, rain in Sao Paulo is shaking up the qualifying order. It could be an unusual starting grid!

anyway back to the F1 - Sunday qualifying is fun today. Wet. 2 red flags, big names out, minor teams at the front. This afternoon/evening should be fun

PS the race time was brought forward an hour due to rain but because of all the drapeau rouge action the start will have to be delayed to give the 4 hours time between qualification and start time!

PPS - Perez has been very stroppy today about the rain and qualification cock ups. Bet Vertappen is having a massive paddy about it also. Both are out in qualification 2

I haven't heard any mention of that on the R5SX commentary, but indeed it's looking like being a 16:00 start (our time) at best.

It should be well worth listening to, with a mixed up grid and more rain expected during the race.

In a way, GMT and UTC are used identically as far as timezones go. But UTC was a new definition for how civil time is defined that replaced a definition related to solar days used by GMT.

With about half a dozen cars needing to be rebuilt, some teams may not be able to get both cars ready in time. Williams will presumably prioritise Albon, but would Aston favour their higher scoring driver or the son of the team owner

The BBC website is saying that the start remains at 15:30 (our time), so the "4 hour minimum gap" has evidently been reduced to around 3 hours. That might have contributed to Williams' decision.

That should be a penalty for Norris. 5 seconds perhaps. Failure to follow start abortive start procedure - he should know the rules. Chaos - superb. More rain coming and it will be getting dark soon.

EDIT - however many cars breached the start procedure. Verstappen also I think. Give everyone 5 seconds and get the race on! Also, to save time: Prepare the safety car.

Max Verstappen has won the São Paulo Grand Prix after starting from 17th on the grid. Esteban Ocon was second & Pierre Gasly third in a great day for Alpine which has moved them up to sixth in the Contructors Championship.

Still under investigation are:
Norris, Russell, Tsunoda, Lawson for the aborted start issue.
Hamilton & Russell for adjusting tyre pressures on the grid when the tyres are attached to the car.

As much as I despise Verstappen, you have to admit that was a championship winning drive.

I do wonder where the challenge to Verstappen will come in 2025:

• Perez - next joke please (!)
• Norris - possibly but gut says he's missing that last bit needed to be a champion
• Piastri - too many "missing" weekends now, I had high hopes for him
• Leclerc - Fast but cracks under pressure
• Hamilton - past it, I think Ferrari will rue letting Sainz go
• Russell - just not champion material
