Mercedes have sandbagged enough in the past that i doubt any of the other teams believe them. Its a good thing for issues with the car to become apparent now though of course, better than during a race weekend!

Out of interest, and not that it really makes any difference, but does anyone know why Lewis has the Yellow T-cam this year?
It means nothing, especially in testing. Some say it’s because George was announced for this year first.

That’s great. The only better news I could see coming is Hulkenberg getting a permanent seat.

But Lance Stroll won't get dropped as his dad owns the team. Its a real shame Hulkenberg doesn't have a seat as he really deserves one, but Lance isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The biggest surprise for me was Haas qualifying 7th and 12th. An especially good effort from Magnussen considering he only came into the team a couple of weeks ago. Bottas also did well to put an Alfa in 6th, only one place behind Hamilton.
McLaren and Aston Martin were down among the also-rans and look like having a lot of work to do to get into contention.

The speculation is that the new E10 fuel is really not working well with the Merc engine.

Even ignoring the last lap controversy from 2021 - I'd say that was a better race than Abu Dhabi!

Indeed, it was a rather good race, especially with some (non controversial this time) drama. Red bull have failed at that whole to finish first, first you must finish thing. All 3 of the retirements were "HRC" (should really be called WNHH - We're Not Honda, Honest!) powered cars, so that's not looking good. Ferrari are definitely looking favourites, with Mercedes a distant third. Like has been predicted, the nopods work well in corners but not elsewhere. McLaren have dropped the ball with these regulation changes. Other than that, an excellent return for KMag.

As a lifelong Macca fan, my hope is that they are only held back in pace due to the brake problems.
Never thought I'd say this but I am genuinely rooting for Ferrari this season. Perhaps it's because he came through the ranks as an engineer, but I have been rooted for Binotto to do good things. RB, on the other hand. I find myself disliking the attitude of their key figures more and more.

red bull are a struggle to like. Something about them ever since their domination of the early 2010's has just felt off, almost like they're overly arrogant. And that's excluding how they've publicly treated several drivers over the years.
I can't say I feel sorry for them. I feel bad for Checo missing out on a podium though.I would say: "Mr Horner... that's called karma!"

My disdain is worse than it was ten years ago, perhaps Webber was providing some level-headedness.

I'm a casual follower of F1, and watched the highlights on Channel 4 last night.
Having seen the new standards on the cars used in anger for the first time, it was clear to see the changes made for a thrilling race rather than one person leading the race half a minute ahead of the pack like last season. But to me the cars looked slower and less nimble than previous years, unless it was a trait of the circuit ? Before all the too and throwing between the first two cars where the lead changed at every corner the commentators were saying that DRS was less effective, and the 18" wheels would make for longer pit stops as the wheels were heavy and not as easy for the pit crew to manage, yet we were still seeing 2.x second changes.
It was quite an exciting race, and one where tactics came into play a lot. Clearly 70c tyre warmers played their part in pit out laps, as Hamilton showed ! - Maybe this season will be more interesting?

The cars are the heaviest they have ever been apparently. So much is new of course so will suffer in comparison to the old regs which had years of refinements. I'm sure before too long the new cars will be looking more nimble.

I enjoyed the race, it was great to see Leclerc and Verstappen race so closely. Sad to see McLaren fall back though.
It does seem that the new design does allow closer racing than the previous generation.
