I see that the Tottenham Hotspur bid of £10.5 million for Leandro Damiao who plays in Brazil for Internacional has been rejected. He is only 21 and played for Brazil in March against Scotland. At least, they are going for youth....similar to Manchester United signing Javier Hernandez, a young player who had represented Mexico in international matches.

My regret is that the team that I have followed for 50 years, Oldham Athletic (founder member of the Premier League) seem unable to bid for a tray of Hollands Meat Pies...let alone new players. Still, we did not meet the fate that befell Stockport County.

Whether or not Oldham can bid for Hollands pies or not, think of poor Stockport or Plymouth who don't actually know if they'll exist by Christmas!

Some trivia now:
Largest British city never to have had a football league club? Wakefield
Largest city in Europe never to have had a top flight football team? Plymouth

Could Swansea, or indeed any of the Welsh teams in the English leagues, play in Europe if qualification was attained? Sorry to ask, i'm actually disappointed I don't know!

Yes they could

And Hughton for Villa - are you for real? You would be happy with a manager with such little experiance or some would say talant and ability. I thought you were a big club!

Villa should try their best to get Hughes - had he stayed at Blackburn I have a feeling that they would have been a top 8 club by now, without Venky's 'help'

Another question about country status.

There was talk of Rangers or Celtic not being allowed to play in the Premiership some time ago...one of the reasons quoted is that they come under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA.

Since there is a Welsh FA, where does that leave Swansea, when the same criteria is applied?

Is it realyl a question fo them not being allowed though? There has been much discussion about the Old Firm joining the Premier League - I can't see any legal basis for it not being allowed really.

A lot of the debate has been whether they should be allowed to walk into the Premiership, or start in the lowest tier of the English system. It is the thought of the latter that seems to make the whole thing a non starter!

In contrast, Swansea City have been in the Football League (Southern League Secodn Divison) since 1912!

I think in light of the well-documented trouble both sets of fans cause, I think it was a case of find any obscure reason not to permit them. Cynical maybe, but as this wrong jurisdiction story exposes the double standards, its clear the old firm aren't wanted in England.

If, and thats a big if, they are permitted, they would probably have to start from the very bottom, otherwise every recently founded club (new saints FC etc) will shout about it being unfair.

When the Welsh clubs that are in the FA League system were formed, there was no Welsh League for them to join. They therefore applied, and were accpeted into, the Southern League, and worked their way through the system.

I've never been comfortable with the idea of Rangers playing in the English league, as it is almost completely based on financial greed though I have no doubt they would challenge with the money availiable to the clubs. I would rather see a more competitive Scottish league, though I think I am on to plums with that. I remember Aberdeen winning European trophies, and Dundee united reaching UEFA cup final, despatching Venables Barcelona on the way with ease. That is when we had good homegrown players up here instead of ten a penny nobodys. Interestingly, Dundee is a city that has had 2 teams reach a European Cup semi final.

Why not just have a single UK Football Association covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? Why should the UK get four national teams when the US only has one? Celtic and Rangers would most likely be in the premier league. Swansea are already there. I'm not sure if any Northern Ireland teams would make it into the Premier League though.

I doubt an Inverness vs Plymouth match will be popular with fans from either club though.

Zoe, this goes back into the realms of history and all four teams that are referred to "The Home Nations" would fight tooth and claw to retain their individual national identity at International football level.

This is why there is always a debate about a GREAT BRITAIN side entering the football part of the Olympic Games.

Manchester had a sample of what to expect when Rangers played a European final match there.
Note comments...Rangers 'fans', but always called an 'Old Firm' problem:roll:
Would love the Premiership 'Gravy train' monies, but it won't ever happen, but if both teams ever did get to any 'promised land' where all monies were equal, of course they would be competitive, people in England (I'm English btw) haven't got a clue about the reality of Sky's bankrolling of the self titled 'Greatest league in the world', FIFA/UEFA is 'jobs for the boys' and only care about the chosen few anyway:oops:
Rant over....

That's right. When the Premier League started, it did not have the right to choose the biggest clubs, it simply took over the old First Divison.

Could the ruling about Rangers and Celtic have been made by FIFA?

Possibly, though I am unsure how such a ruling would fit in with Berwick playing in the Scottish League!!!

Would they be allowed to switch?

That is correct. The Welsh League came later.

If you wish to play for the Welsh Cup, does your team have to play in a Welsh league?

Yes, the clubs that play in the English system cannot comepte for the Welsh Cup now.

Interestingly, when Swansea were on the verge of bankruptcy in 2003. there wer esome who wanted the club to pull out of the English system and play in the Welsh premiership if they survived. I ams ure the same people are now thankfully that this was not done!

Of course, anyone suggesting that the Swans would be in the Premier League in 2001/12 would have been sectioned for their own protection.

Historiaclly, football began in the UK and the home associations were formed long before UEFA or FIFA. As they predate the latter organisations, they have been permitted to stay independent.

Quite rightly, the other nations wish to retain their own international associations and, by extension, their international teams. Suggestions of a GB or UK team rarely emanate from the smaller countries, it is usually the English who want the pick of the best players to cover up the deficiencies in their own team!

For instance there was a call for a UK team around the time that England were struggling to find a left sided wide player, and Wales just happened to have Ryan Giggs at his peak...

There would be historical precedents in this case, as Berwick had moved from being an English town to being a Scottish town and back to being an English town in its geography many times over the last millenium, as I am sure that you are well aware.

Don't forget that gretna used to play in the English non league and queens park used to play in England when they first formed and only pulled out because they wanted to stay an amateur team.

They got to the FA cup final too, twice I believe. They got as far as the semi finals in the first FA cup competition, but had to withdraw after drawing the tie 0-0 due to lack of funds. Could have been a very big club nowadays if they had decided to turn professional.

I'm sure all the Premier League clubs look forward to their increased policing bills..

Ours is likely to be lessened by the fact Birmingham got relegated (:lol:) making The Hawthorns the nearest ground to us

Believe me I am delighted Birminham are down after we were seconds from knocking them out of the Carling Cup this season. However all the Welsh teams added to the lower leagues was increased policing bills and violence. I'm not sure there is a case for them to be playing in the English system at all since the Welsh league was formed. ;)

At the very least the farcical situation whereby their bookings are dealt with by the WFA needs to change.

I don't see what additional policing costs have been added by league teams being Welsh as opposed to English.

But you are right about diciplinary matters being under the auspices of the WFA. That is wrong!

No becuase Chester, shrewsbury and Herefore to name 3 have won it ( I thin since 95/96 it has been Welsh Clubs only)

As for Rangers and Celtic in the premier League. Dont make me laugh. They are bottom third PL/top third Championship at best. I have watched quite a bit of SPL football live(as in at the gorunds) and the standard is terrible. Most clubs would struggle in league 1. It says a lot when Richie Foran can go form my team Dalington ( then in league 2) and become a decent SPL forward at ICT. Aso look at the likes of John Daly. Hartlepool - Dundee Utd Or Kevin McBride, who signed for Dalington ( League 2) from Motherwell SPL and went back to the SPL with Falkirk.

IF, and it is a big IF, either of them got through the first season and survived, which i doubt very much, THEN they might be a force once the TV money kicks in and theier pulling power starts to attract decent players.
