Moyes now faces the same scenario as that which Brendan Rogers also finds himself, with regards to being answerable to the FA who appear not to be enamoured with adverse post-match comments that criticise match officials.

As an update to this matter, Moyes has now been fined £8,000 by the FA and warned about his future conduct.

Cleverley and Anderson are not as important parts of the 2014 team as Ronaldo, Scholes and Giggs were of the 2008 team.

Indeed. The fact that Anderson had played so few games this season shows that he was not one of our 'Midfield Mainstays'.

I do hope this move turns out to be permanent. He hasn't been good enough for us, and as opposed to being a fringe player he'll get the chance to show that 'promise' somewhere else. Best for both parties IMO.

Peanuts to a Premiership Manager -I wonder what % of his weekly wage that is?

A Ticking-off like this is no incentive to respect officials, instead managers get away with making snide comments based on selective multi-camera slo-mo replays that provide excuses when their side fails and ingratiate themselves with the owner.

At least Neil Warnock has a case when he makes comments - he is a fully qualified referee, whilst Rogers and Moyes etc. simply whinge - I'd like to see them in action with the whistle - er, perhaps not !:D

I believe Forest Green rovers sign Lee Hughes only few weeks ago so hopefully he don't played well against Hyde tomorrow afternoon or Hyde may end up losing 5/6-0.

Aleast Hyde scored two goals and it was looking bad when they were 3-0 down after only 15 mins gone.

Not good day for Oldham as they lose 1-0 to Port Vale, we only move one places down in table and now 17th but next two games are against Peterborough and Wolves and I can't see us winning or even drawing against them two, so it could mean Latics may found themselves in bottom after 28th Jan but hopefully that not the case.

Droylsden (probably worse team with Hyde winning on Tues night) lose 3-1 to Stafford and I think it still mean Droylsden have lose all of their away games this season. (Goal diff -98 now for Droylsden)

Diving tosser. Bet we don't get anything in those circumstances

Anyone care to defend the notion that the top teams get all the favourable decisions?

Better performance today but still on the wrong end of the result

Took up a new position today in the West Stand rather than my usual North Stand spot.

Leicester took their chance when they got it, that's what good teams do. We didn't create anything in the 2nd half. Luke Varney came back into the team and played well, overall we did look a bit fresher. The slide continues however, it's now getting rather worrying.

Liverpool Villa is an entertaining game, not sure about that penalty though. Thought I saw the most blatant dive ever today from Leicester's Richie De Laet to con the ref but I think Suarez might have topped it.

I didn't hear that much of your game but apparently you could have had it all sorted by half time. Losing 1-0 to the league leaders isn't bad and the performance is good but it's the points which matter unfortunately

I'm listening on BBC WM and they're emphatic it was never a penalty. Any idea what talksport or TV have made of it?

Sky showed numerous replays of it and said it was soft. Guzan was furious with the award

I wonder how much added time there will be? 3 seems sensible to me but we're often end on the thin end of the wedge when it comes to added time

I'll take 2-2 but it's galling because we were cheated out of two points because refs favour big clubs but also because we should have scored at least 3 in the first half

It was soft, but a goalkeeper putting themselves down like that is asking for trouble. Suarez was going away from goal or I suspect he would have seen Guzan walk as well.

Finally saw it on MOTD. Specsavers will be doing a roaring trade when MOTD send their pundits to get their eyes checked. Perhaps this inherent blindness is the cause of their biased coverage?

Sadly that is true. It should be utter garbage though - you're essentially saying a goalkeeper is not allowed to try and come for the ball in his penalty area.

We need real punishment for diving although I'll take enforcement of the current rules. Why video technology cannot be used is beyond me - if I were a cynical man I would say it's because the FA wants to keep "exciting" football

It's only Utd the coverage is biased again remember....

It was as much as a con can be within the weak rules of the game

69% of folk think Suarez dived according to the MOTD poll - a result promptly dismissed as wrong by Mr Linekar (without saying as such) because it disagreed with his opinion. That is the sort of arrogance I cannot abide

My flatmate who's a Liverpool fan seemed almost embarrassed by the whole thing tonight. TBF to him though he is probably one of the more realistic / grounded Liverpool fans I know.

Most of us actually are. We just don't get noticed because we keep our gobs shut most of the time.

I really cannot understand why video technology hasn't been brought into the league (apart from the goal line technology which gets used once in a blue moon).

It could operate similar to the NFL where only certain things are reviewable. In the NFL, you're not allowed to challenge or review a play for a foul such as Pass Interference or Holding where it is a judgement call by the officials. But I really don't understand why we can't have a second look at penalties or goals disallowed for offside. As soon as the ball goes out of play, all the referee has to do is say "The previous play is under review" and go and have a look at what happened. Too many games are being decided on 50/50 decisions where the referee is in a position where he can't see the incident properly.

Man City's first goal yesterday was the first time the goal technology has given a goal the referee hadn't in the Premier league.

Technology works excellently in rugby, initially could only be used for tries. Now it is able to be used for contentious penalty decisions. A TV ref sent a player off in a game last week, the referee was aware of foul play, but was obscured from who did what. Sent to the TV referee, who was able to ensure a correct decision, and in fact uncovered a more serious thing the referee hadn't seen.

IMO it's because goals are classed as exciting and it generates controversy which is generally liked by the media. More cynically I suspect it's because the big clubs, who benefit from this the most, are actively against it for the reason in the last clause. It can hardly be claimed that it breaks the pace of the game given the inevitable complaints (for which nobody gets booked)

I've not seen the sending off incident but it sure feels nice to see Manchester United players getting sent off, legitimately or otherwise

Only seen photos of it but Raphael's looked very nasty. Two feet off the ground and all that...

It was a horror, a leg breaker if ever I've seen one. Amazing that we get Matt Smith sent off for brushing a player yet a two footed lunge is only a yellow.

I watched both games today. Adebayor is a strange one, frozen out by AVB completely, told to train with the youth team (which apparently he did without making a fuss)
Sherwood brings him back and he's look good. He was actually superb today, should have had a hat trick but for one of teammates being greedy.

In the 2nd game, Chelsea scored totally against the run of play, slight bit of luck for Eto'o with the deflection but all credit to him because the midfield never gave him the ball in the first 15 minutes. He then dropped deeper, won the ball himself and fashioned his own chance, really really good play. Chelsea then dominated and deserved the win, not sure what Evans and Valencia were doing for the third goal.

WBA v Everton live tomorrow. I'm actually down in the West Midlands, travelling from Manchester around 4.30pm so should to get my hotel for kic off.

How time can change matters. Not long since it was said on the Football thread last season that Manchester United never had any players sent off as a result of what seemed to be a pact with the devil and that there was more chance of the Second Coming occurring than a series of referees decisions actually going against them...:D

Its Man City if anyone who are paying the referees this season. Man Utd certainly are not!

Still think its fergies fault he left Moyes with a horrendous squad. But unfortunately, he did not amend in the transfer market, so maybe both their faults. Certainly fergie has done well keeping himself a saint despite creating an extremely mediocre Utd Squad.

Maybe because they're judgement calls by the officials?

But how do you propose this will work? It works in American Football as there is a stoppage of sorts between every play (between 20-40 seconds average between every play taking place) but in Football its near continious. It will have to be a snap judgement by the managers and could be wrong. Will they also have red flags to throw to challenge? What can be challenged?

Personally it should be upto the officials to decide if the decisions need reviewing. Also with potentially bad challenges which the referee or linesman haven't quite seen they should follow Rugby's example and put it on report for the disiplinary panal to review it on a Monday morning to decide what punishment should of been handed out on the day

  • Penalties - be careful what you wish for! Close up replays of just about any incident in the box show innumerable little breaches of the rules. Could a referee ignore those if they were obliged to be examining the evidence? And as we know from all the "diving" controversies, it is rarely possible to give a definitive answer, even on whether a foul took place in the box.
  • Offside - likewise. Except in very rare cases video evidence clears nothing up.
Paradoxically, I think the real-time judgement of the on-pitch officials is as fair as anything, provided that judgement is accepted. It is when players, management and the FA undermine the officials that the rot sets in.
