I have a feeling that Barton will be released by QPR now, and that he will have a fair bit of difficulty in finding a new club. No matter which club he's at next season, he'll be banned for a third of the EPL season, or a quarter of the Championship season. If someone does sign him and pay him a lot of money, then he's a very lucky person indeed.

I suppose some of the older forum members will remember the group called Manfred Mann singing about The Greta Garbo home for wayward boys and girls, in the song "My name's Jack".

This establishment sounds just the place where Joey Barton should have been incarcerated years ago....and never let out again..:D:D

Watching 'Panorama' reporting about racism in Poland/Ukraine (Euro 2012 'Hosts'), shocking stuff in the 21st Century, frightening in reality...

I heard John Terry flew out straight after the programme ended.

I notice that none of our Caledonian forum members have made a posting about the friendly match between USA and Scotland, where the manager of Scotland had said that he was looking forward to seeing how well his team would perform.

USA...5.....Scotland 1 ...being the final score with Landon Donovan scoring a hat-trick for USA...and the Scottish goal being an own-goal..

To be frank, I'm rapidly giving up hope in Scottish football these days
We came as close as we're likely to in the foreseeable future when we ran France and Italy down to the wire; now it's back to reality it seems...

Scotland beat France home and away back then but lost to Georgia. It was a difficult group though for Scotland as both the 2006 World Cup finalists were in it. Had the group not been so strong then maybe Scotland would have got away with losing to Georgia like when England lost to Northern Ireland in 2005 but still qualified for the 2006 World Cup.

Just to go back to last night, anyone who hasn't seen it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Ny0E5pRKU

That challenge from Sheringham was disgraceful. He isn't in the same time zone as the ball when he makes the challenge, I seriously think he was targeted there. That is shameful from an ex-England international, I wouldn't even expect to see that in a Sunday league.

What's so bad about that? Just a typical forwards tackle.

Scotland are pish and have been for at least the last ten years, they may have had a few freak results from time to time like the France examples as posted above. I have given up even supporting them due to the bias shown by the SFA and that prick Harry potter look a like manager, I wouldny open my curtains if they were playing in my back green. Consistently picking poor 2nd rate players from English championship clubs and of course always picking players from rangers and Celtic even though they are Shiite, but you get a game for Scotland if you play for them and it's been the case for years. I'm sure it was a game in the Czech republic Scotland started the game with no forwards and still got beat despite trying to defend. People pay lots of money to travel to these games to watch a team line up in a 5 5 formation. Until he's sacked i won't be interested in Scotland games. As for the USA result everybody thinks the USA are crap but they are not as Ingerland found out in the world cup. Scottish football is on its erse and the sooner rangers gtf out the league the better, and they can take Celtic with them and make the league better and more competitive for the other teams.

Major talk about Leeds United being taken over now. So much so that the club has actually released a statement saying confiriming there is 'talks' ongoing.

The club say "investment" but those in the know say if it goes through it is a complete takeover.

Bates out!

Please let this be true and please let the new owners have the clubs interest at heart and the money to move to forward. Please please please please please please please.

Please let something good happen to my football club.

There will be 24 teams in Euro 2016 so Scotland should have a good chance of qualifying.

No chance, we always get shafted in the group qualifiers. Never get easy groups but as I say if that Harry Potter hearts b*****d manager is still in charge by then were screwed.

The top two teams in each group and the best third place team from all the groups will qualify automatically with the other third place teams contesting playoffs. It's certainly not impossible for Scotland to finish third.

Well it isn't impossible but I await the usual shafting when the draws for the group stages are made......... It doesn't help that Scotland are utter pish though.

England should be looking north of the border to figure out what's coming to the national team if we continue with this influx of foreigners.

I think England need to change the attitude that all they have to do is turn up and they will win every tournament they play in.

Couldn't agree more. Expectations are stupidly unrealistic and impossible to match, obviously this must be the manager's fault because it couldn't possibly be the player's . Sorry about that rant, I can't stand the way the press treats the national football team

England have been quite unlucky to be knocked out quite a few times in the last 30 years though.

1986: Maradonna.

1990: Penalties.

1996: Penalties.

1998: Penalties.

2002: An exceptional goal scored by Ronaldinho.

2004: Penalties.

2006: Penalties.

2010: Disallowed goal.

Being knocked out five times on penalties isn't bad luck - it's bad preparation. (Especially psychological, as you can see in the body language of the players!)
And, no one can sensibly claim 2010 was because of "that" goal. Again, if the psychology was right, that sort of thing stiffens up the sinews.
What England footballers have been very good at since 1966 is sulking, moaning "We wuz robbed" and blaming everyone else.

Indeed, however England (fans / media) need to realise England aren't, and haven't been since '66, a world class team. If they do make it through the group stages this year, they'll only get trounced by Spain or Italy (or Croatia?) in the QFs.

I highlighted 2004 as you could put that down to disallowed goal too, I believe Sol Campbell had his header chalked off due to climbing or similar. I remember The Sun started a hate campaign against the referee afterwards.

Disagree I'm afraid. You make your own luck. It doesn't help when your so called big stars bottle it when taking a penalty. Disallowed goal well that was comedy gold in pubs and households up here ;)

As it turned out, England did not lose by one goal but had that goal been allowed to count then England could have decided to play very defensively and just try to prevent Germany scoring and hope for a goal off a set piece like against Spain last year. Of course this is quite risky as if the match had ended 2-2 I think most of us know who would have won the penalty shootout.

As for the penalty shootouts, in 1996 England scored all five of their penalties which may well have been enough to win in some cases but in this case Germany scored all of their penalties and England missed the first in sudden death. In 2006 Portugal missed two of their penalties and England may well have won had it not been for Ricardo who was very good at saving penalties.

Not that easy with someone like Ricardo in goal though. He saved three of England's penalties, got a hand to Hargreaves' penalty and I believe even got a hand to Zidane's penalty in the semi-final. I think the two players that have missed penalties in shootouts rather than have them saved or Waddle in 1990 and Beckham in 2004. Pearce, Southgate, Ince, Batty, Vassell, Lampard, Gerrard and Carragher all had their penalties saved. At the end of the day when there is a penalty shootout, you can have a team or world class penalty takers but eventually someone is going to have to miss for there to be a result.

I don't think there is any doubt that it was a goal, unlike in 1966.

Staying with international football, who remembers when Czech Republic were world number 2 and Mexico world number 4, less than a decade ago? How times have changed! Mind you, having said that, after the 2010 WC Chile and Ghana were well up there too, both good sides IME.

There's only one team I can see winning this summer, the Oranje. I think a lot saw the 2010 Final as the end of them, but there's shedloads of talent left, and RVP's in excellent form at the minute.

A confident player will stick the ball where it should go. You could have have the best Keeper in the world but if the penalty is good enough then it will go in. All about confidence not arrogance.

They certainly looked a class act at Wembley in February. From inside the stadium they didn't even appear to be trying that hard!

You love trying to get us all ready for the "inevitable" don't you? :p

They would

I suppose you could say the same about 1998 as well - with Campbell (who had never scored for England at the time) the victim again.

Being knocked out five times on penalties isn't bad luck - it's bad preparation. (Especially psychological, as you can see in the body language of the players!)

The penalties are down to preparation. We saw that against Portugal in 2004 and 2006. Losing both was not down to luck. The same would have been true in 2010 had we actually performed well against the Germans, disallowed goal or not.

What England footballers have been very good at since 1966 is sulking, moaning "We wuz robbed" and blaming everyone else.

They've got to be good at something I suppose...

...too bad the answers are always things like these, as well as being egotists, wimps, closet females and primadonnas.

You make your own luck.

There are few things I disagree with in my life more than this.

You do not. End of. Sorry ;)

On a side note, met & spoke to Rio Ferdinand today on board Virgin whilst out on a day trip with BB21.

You know meeting me in person the evening prior to that is more important :p

Seriously though, what's he like? Does he sound as "Cockney" in real life? Any of this "merked" (or whatever it was) business?

Hoping for a Netherlands v Germany final, that'll be interesting to say the least (or semi final if that's not possible) <D

Perhaps Spain will dive their way to another cup win? <(<(

Terry fouled Ricardo though so that shouldn't have been a goal. If the referee had seen the ball cross the line in 2010 then it would have been a goal.

And then when we invariably lose that everyone will complain that we're hopeless at shoot-outs again, which would bring us back to Square One.

Unless we are lucky to get that far in the first place, in which case we might win. As with Spain in 1996.

Germany had a goal disallowed in extra time in 1996. England scored all of their five penalties in the shootout, the only difference was that in sudden death Southgate had his penalty saved and Möller scored so England were not exactly rubbish at taking penalties that time.
