I would think so, and you have the chance to change your style for day 2 if you felt you got it wrong on day 1! No training or eventual assessment worth the name is going to put any weight on what you wear.
(I suspect that nowadays some applicants won't have much choice about what they wear up to the point that their uniform is issued, but that doesn't have any relevance to how good they willl be at the job!)

Maybe a smart shirt and chinos day 1 and judge the general feeling from the room for the rest of the training period.

Which TOC are you starting with? When I started it was suggested to us in the onboarding paperwork to wear smart casual. Didn’t actually take too long to get uniform.

I find it hard to believe the toc hasn’t sent you some information.

But it’s obvious you should wear smart casual to be on the safe side.

Smart casual on day one.
Travel light, if you can- you might find yourself lugging home your uniform at the end of the day.
If you get the opportunity to, try the basics on as soon as possible for sizing, and then you can take it back to swap while you'll have easy access to uniform. Once you're out in depot, railway procurement takes eons... Top tip- don't swap or give anything away unless you've already got a replacement, for the reason above.

Sounds just like my work. You can leave personal property or money lying about and it won't be touched. Leave any piece of equipment or uniform for 5 mins and its gone.

Never really known that to happen at any TOC I've been at. It can just be quite slow to get a replacement if you send something back to get a different size.
