It does not seem likely that (m)any of the Zebra funded electric buses will now be the new Arrival bus, as a cash crisis has halted development and testing of the bus:-

https://arrival.gcs-web.com/news-re...reports-second-quarter-2022-financial-results

Bus

Achieved European certification in Q2
The Arrival Bus has started operating on public roads, taking employees from site to site
Customer trials and investment in the Bus microfactory will continue once the Company secures additional capital

Arrival are seeking $300 million funding for 2023, but that is for continuing work on the van, so goodness knows when the bus would get funding. I would imagine the Zebra buses have to be on the road by a certain date.

Considering certain areas were supposedly getting these by the end of this year(!), I always had a suspicion that they wouldn’t materialise on time, or even ever.

Suspect it’ll be more E200EVs and awful MetroCitys (ew) then

Wouldn't think the MetroCity - more like the Wright Kite BEV?
Without trying to get yet another comment removed for no source, I would suggest otherwise for certain areas. Completely forgot about the Kite, and wouldn’t be completely surprised to see it in some places along with the Volvo single EV, but my hunch would be majority E200EVs & Yutongs (again, my mind completely skipping over the best single deck EV)

One thing is certain. There's plenty of choice out there.

First Bus names leaders of new regional structure

It seems odd that one appointee is only for a year, when 2 others are apparently looking for work within First Bus.

First Bus names leaders of new regional structure
First Bus has confirmed changes to its regional organisation structure and named the leaders of the newly formed local business units that will result.

The overhaul is “designed to position the company for growth and enable it to more quickly capture post-COVID-19 changes and deliver innovative solutions,” the company says in a statement. The following business unit Managing Director appointments have been made or confirmed:

Duncan Cameron remains MD for Scotland, a position that he has held on a full-time basis since January following a period as interim MD after succeeding the promoted Andrew Jarvis
Doug Claringbold will become MD of Cymru and West of England. That represents an expanded remit for Mr Claringbold, who joined First Bus with responsibility for West of England in February 2021 as successor to James Freeman. The current First Midlands operation at Worcester will come under Mr Claringbold’s responsibility from 1 October
Simon Goff, currently MD for First South West, has been named MD of the South and South West business unit
Piers Marlow, presently MD of First Essex, will assume the role of MD for East of England, capturing the Eastern Counties and Essex businesses
Ian Humphreys, currently MD for Manchester and York, will take on leadership of Manchester, Midlands (comprising First Leicester and First Potteries) and South Yorkshire. However, Mr Humphreys will retire on 31 August 2023 and hand over responsibility for this business unit to a successor
Paul Matthews, MD for West Yorkshire, continues in that role. West Yorkshire will become part of business unit North and West Yorkshire on 1 October. Mr Matthews will oversee it until a permanent MD is appointed. He is “considering other, future roles within First Bus,” the group says
Marc Reddy will continue to lead First Hampshire, Dorset and Berkshire (HDB) until the establishment of business unit South and South West on 1 October, at which point HDB will come under Mr Goff’s remit. Like Mr Matthews, Mr Reddy is also exploring other opportunities within First Bus
Dervla McKay, Andrew Scholey and Simon Cursio remain in post leading the Aircoach, First Travel Solutions and Somerset Passenger Solutions businesses, respectively.
Current First Cymru MD Jane Reakes-Davies will leave the business on 30 September, while Eastern Counties MD Steve Wickers will depart on 15 October after 35 years with First Bus and its predecessors. Former Midlands and South Yorkshire MD Nigel Eggleton has already left, departing during week commencing 8 August.

Speaking about the new regional structure and appointments, First Bus MD Janette Bell says: “I am really pleased that we are appointing such a strong group of talented people as Managing Directors of our local business units, and I look forward to sharing more detail as we grow our teams across the wider business.

“I would like to thank all of our teams for working with us as we reset the business for the future.” First Bus completed assembly of an overhauled group executive leadership team headed by Ms Bell in May.

There's a few oddities in there. There's Piers Marlow (who is mid 60s) taking over the East whilst Steve Wickers (who seems to have done a decent job with First Eastern Counties) is out.

Also, not certain what Doug Claringbold has done to warrant getting a hugely expanded role, nor the optics of having a Welsh opco controlled from over the bridge.

Living in Wales, I envisage the Welsh Nationalists will be all over that. Although they don't seem to have noticed that Stagecoach and First are Scottish, Arriva are German and ComfortDelGro (who own Adventure Travel) are based in Singapore!

It will be interesting to see how much local autonomy Mr. Claringbold gives his Swansea operation.

In fairness, Stagecoach and Adventure Travel are locally managed. Arriva, people seem to not quite realise that it's managed from Liverpool. Arriva Wales also hasn't done anything massive in the past... few years I'd say so people don't have much to say.

Indeed - it's a decent enough operation but since Andy Sherrington went, it seemed to be a bit something and nothing

Up until earlier this year, they had Michael Morton who was very much put in that position because of that political element.

Don't you remember the pressure to split Arriva North West and Wales? Nor the arbitrary passing back of the mid Wales borders operations from Midlands North to have a Welsh firm operating it?

Off-topic too, considering this is a thread about FirstGroup :)
Sorry @GusB

In defence, it was part of a discussion about how First's decision to manage their Welsh operations from England, and how there have been historic precedents with Arriva having to have more Welshness in their management!

Whilst I recognise that there are challenges common to all operators, and that James Freeman's shoes were big ones to fill, I can't say I've seen much that Doug Claringbold has brought much to the West of England business, let alone to expand the brief to encompass Worcester and Wales.

Let’s be honest, as poor as he has been since taking over from James, - we’ve had a pandemic as well - West of England was never going to be managed from Cymru or Worcester so there was only ever going to be one outcome.

As I said - the post-pandemic issues are common factors; perhaps there's a load of stuff going on in the background but not seen much from FWoE. Agree with your latter point though - fait accompli!

And Simon Goff gets South and South West, usurping his old boss.

Will there be a layer between these ‘super managers’ and the day-to-day operations? It felt that First had (finally) got on the right track by taking things more local – can’t see how anyone can keep on top of these vast new territories. Even the politics of it seems odd. How can one person – however talented – deal with shire counties, mayors, even different governments, each one with its unique priorities/policies. There’s a lot to be said for companies having a sense of institutional history – they seem all set to (re)make the mistakes of the past.

Hmm. Surely, the most important one they need to "get on with" is Jeanette Bell, and she seems to have successfully chosen a team who won't "rock the boat".

The only surprising omission of "a name" it struck me was Moir Lockhead, but give it time, I suppose. At least he knew how to make a headline!

Janette Bell certainly rocked the board when she was CEO of P&O Ferries, before all the recent news.

Strictly speaking, Stagecoach is now German too having been taken over by DWS.

I wonder whether it would benefit both sides for First and National Express to consider a merger?

See twitter post below:

The streetdeck in the background is clearly to First spec/livery. Is anyone able to confirm who these are for and how many?

Rumour has it they are for Eastern Counties at Ipswich to replace the B7TL/ALX400’s - which would also require these Streetdecks to be the low height variant (as per Arriva and Brighton & Hove etc).
Ipswich getting new StreetDecks would be a surprise (to me!) but it would make sense, as amid the current merry-go-round of transfers to aid standardisation across the group, there has seemed to be no plausible source to replace Ipswich's superannuated 'decker fleet.

Of the other possibilities (that wear that red scheme): Eastern Counties (Great Yarmouth/Lowestoft) have had something of an influx of newer vehicles in recent times, and having already repainted most of their fleet, it would seem an unlikely destination. South & West Wales also seems unlikely - they are seemingly expecting the eight E400 MMCs from Leeds (of which more in a moment) to join the handful of similar they took from Bristol, and all are expected to gain the Campus 2 Campus blue scheme anyway, rather than red. The remaining 'decker fleet there is mostly for schools/contract work anyway.

There is certainly a batch of Wrightbus vehicles due soon to the group - as far as I am aware (linking back to sources would take all day, I'm afraid), Leeds are due nine StreetDecks to join their existing large fleet (to release the E400 MMCs mentioned above), and Huddersfield are due ten StreetLites, and I've heard murmurs about Potteries (!) getting StreetDecks to replace their elderly B7TLs on the Keele University service 25.

Ipswich have 18 B7TL/ALX400s remaining - the largest fleet left in the group of a rapidly vanishing type, I make it just 40 closed-top examples at the most left - so 18 new StreetDecks would be quite the investment.

What has happened to the remaining 284 Leeds order. I think the last post here said that they were still coming?

First Bus places one of UK’s largest ever EV bus orders with UK manufacturer Wrightbus following DfT ZEBRA funding award

https://firstgroup-plc.production.investis.com/news-and-media/latest-news/2022/31082022.aspx

31 Aug 2022

  • Largest ever UK EV bus order outside of London
  • UK-built buses will secure green jobs in the UK
  • Includes introduction of world’s most efficient double-decker buses
  • A total investment of £81m in new Zero Emission vehicles to support bus services across England split between First Bus and the Department for Transport
First Bus has placed one of UK’s largest Electric Vehicle (EV) bus orders with UK manufacturer Wrightbus, following successful bids with Local Authorities as part of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) funding scheme.
The £81m order, totalling 193 buses, is the largest EV bus purchase outside of London and will see new zero emission buses being rolled out across England from March 2023.
First Bus will invest £43m in the new vehicles and will be supported to complete the electric fleet project with a £38m grant from the DfT.
First Bus has worked closely with five Local Authority partners to secure the funding, which helps to bridge the gap between the cost of a Euro VI diesel bus and the EV equivalent as well as the relevant infrastructure costs necessary to charge the vehicles.
The order will be split between the following five areas;
  • Leicester (68 buses) in partnership with Leicester City Council.
  • York (44 Buses) in partnership with City of York Council.
  • Leeds (32 Buses) in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
  • Norwich (15 Buses) in partnership with Norfolk County Council.
  • Portsmouth (34 Buses) in partnership with Portsmouth City Council & Hampshire County Council.
Each regional project will be completed over the course of the next two years. It means that First Bus will have over 500 EV buses in operation in what is a huge leap forward towards their pledge of an entirely zero emission fleet by 2035.
The new EV buses will be fully built in Northern Ireland at the Wrightbus facility in Ballymena in a significant boost for the UK economy and the manufacturing sector.
This latest partnership between First Bus and Wrightbus comes following the successful rollout of the world’s first double-decker Hydrogen buses in Aberdeen in 2020.
As one of the UK’s largest bus operators, First Bus will also work with the Ballymena-based bus builder to help upskill current and new engineers alike to help take their people on this decarbonisation journey with them. This will allow First Bus and Wrightbus to create new green jobs, as well as enhancing skillsets for existing staff.
First Bus UK, Managing Director, Janette Bell, said: “We are absolutely delighted to place our largest ever Zero Emission Vehicle order and to do so with a UK manufacturer. Wrightbus have a really exciting product that we feel will enhance the customer experience at the same time as benefitting the environment.
“As leaders in sustainable mobility, we are fully aligned with the Government’s ambitions for a net-zero carbon transport system, including zero-emission bus fleets. We will continue to work closely with central and Local Government across the UK to support the delivery of our shared decarbonisation ambitions and commitments.”
Ben Werth, Chief Commercial Officer at Wrightbus, said: "This is another significant deal for Wrightbus - the largest zero emissions bus order outside of London - and we are delighted to once again be partnering with First Bus in the drive to zero-emission public transport. First Bus, like us, is consistently on the forefront of new and exciting technology and at the forefront of zero- and low-emission travel.
“All of the buses - the GB Kite Electroliner BEV and the StreetDeck Electroliner BEV, which is the world's most efficient double decker battery-electric bus - will be manufactured and assembled at our Ballymena factory, which means support for jobs in NI, and wider across the UK through our domestic supply chain.
“2022 has been a remarkable year for Wrightbus so far, as this deal comes after our recent, historic deals with the National Transport Authority (NTA), Australia and Germany. This latest deal with First Bus strengthens the reputation we have forged in the zero-emission transport sector and will help play an important part in the UK’s ambitions for decarbonisation.”
Transport Minister Baroness Vere said: “It’s fantastic to see First Bus place the largest ever order of electric buses outside London, thanks to investment from our £270 million scheme.
“This marks a key stepping-stone towards our National Bus Strategy commitment of funding 4,000 zero-emissions buses, as we decarbonise and level up transport across the country.
“Not only does it drive forward our journey to Net Zero, but will also support hundreds of green, high-skilled jobs in the UK.”

When the Arrival (or non Arrival) announcement was made on the manufacturer thread, I did suggest that Wrightbus would be the most likely direction that First would look to go in. I'm reading that this will be phased with the first new vehicles in spring 2023 and completion of the order c.18 months later.

Certainly shows a continuing move back to Wright from ADL, following on from the Streetdecks in Weston super Mare/Bradford and Streetlites in Hampshire, whereas aside from the Leeds Streetdecks, they'd had little in the previous 4 years.
