Buses not tracking are automatically shown as cancelled at bus stops, when they should be showing a non live time.
Thanks for the info. That's also quite worrying given that I've seen plenty of them showing as cancelled when the bus is tracking and has been for the entire journey.

The problem is that the general public are very good at blaming First for what they cannot control. I've seen plenty of people say car congestion making buses late is just "excuses" and that they should be on time regardless of that and roadworks. From my point of view, if someone uses the bus especially for work on a weekly basis then there is no excuse for not understanding the issues any bus company can't control.

The electronic bus stop boards are a huge part of the problem too. SPT update them too early for all of the services listed as cancelled to definitely be cancelled. I was at a stop one day and all 3 buses mentioned were listed as cancelled yet all 3 turned up. The app is a whole other issue but I've previously discussed that and I never really expect it to change because it requires the depots to not be lazy and update cancellations as they occur regardless of how short notice it is.
I agree but you're never going to change that perception. All you can do is mitigate the feelings of distrust aimed at operators.

Here's a thought. Print a leaflet and make it available on the buses (a bit like the Metro but more relevant) telling the travellers exactly what problems cause the delays they are experiencing. Rather than expecting them to work it out for themselves, go on the attack. Be proactive rather than reactive. Get your problems out there for others to see and maybe, just maybe, you might get less crap thrown at you about your service. It's time that operators took the problems they encounter by the balls and made as many people as they can aware of what they are up against. Get the travelling public on your side rather than constantly apologising for things that are without your control.

This is an awful lot of common sense and why I think they'll never do it. I also think part of the problem is the very "robotic" approach to social media, the app and customer service. It's a very broken system that badly needs a revamp.

I'm a firm believer in doing it from the depots so you have people responding who know exactly what they're talking about. On top of that, they'll be able to respond very quickly as they won't need to communicate with anyone else and they only need to cover one account and not loads like the team currently need to do in the contact centre.

I know our current network very well and even sometimes I'm not 100% sure of where a street is so I'd not expect someone in Leeds to know Glasgow and the surrounding areas inside out.

If this was to happen it would very much have to be at the local level and by that I mean depot, not the ivory towers of Caledonia Rd. Let's take a hypothetical situation. There are roadworks scheduled on Great Western Rd that will affect the 3 and 6a. A week before they are due to commence you let the passengers on these buses know what's coming.

The boffins at Caledonia Rd will suggest that you put a notice on the website but how many passengers would regularly check that. So, to make it more targeted, the next suggestion would probably be to stick a notice on the buses but how do you know what bus is going on what service. You don't so you put it on every bus in that depot. The problem with that is information overload and how many passengers would even look at it.

The easiest way to target your audience is to give them something they can take away with them as a reminder. Each bus is issued with them before going into service on that route so there is minimal waste - nobody on the 77 cares about the problems of Great Western Rd.

For me too much emphasis is placed on social media as a means of communication. Folks, like me, who don't do it would rather read a leaflet and I'm pretty sure that the social media junkies could stretch their imagination to this concept as well.

One thing is for sure, what First are doing now isn't working as well as it could so why not try doing something different. Life has taught me that sometimes the most simple of solutions is staring you in the face.

Your right there, I wish companies would move away from twitter for publishing updates, not everyone uses it and never understood why they don't do the same with the likes of Facebook.

They should use both to be honest especially as the First Glasgow Twitter gets far more responses than the Facebook does although on the Facebook there are still some so it's actually still worth bothering with.

A cancellations page that is updated through the day is the key for me personally. When the driver shortages were first spoken about we used to get lists of Blantyre and Overtown's quite regularly but now that doesn't even happen.

The app needs to be used more for service updates and cancellations but even when a lot of the cancellations were actually put into the app, a lot of the very early and later evening ones were missed so passengers are left guessing whether a bus will turn up or not.

It's effectively a 21 hour a day network we have if you look at the first and last buses of the day but customers need to know whether their bus is coming or not regardless of the time.

I guess that it's all down to cost and the need to appear modern and trendy. Sending a tweet costs nothing (at least I think it does) but I don't know if it costs you anything to be able to get them. I assume that if you send a tweet you know how many people got it?? That probably scores higher than how many people actually needed that info.

Printing leaflets cost time, money and effort. A modicum of the English language is also useful. Too much like hard work for the young professionals that are on the management ladder in the big companies nowadays.

As we are about to enter 2023, what do we expect of First and the services in the network in the year ahead? I personally think it'll be a mixed bag where some services improve in frequency but I also wouldn't be surprised if cuts to some services also occurred.

Can't see any major changes to the network.

Was on a 07 plate B9TL today, oldest buses with First Glasgow?

There was still 2 B7RLEs in service a few days ago and there's an ex Jersey Dart still in service, usually used on the 14 between Rutherglen and Cathkin.

I see lots more today on VOSA and other week there were lots of SPT services getting taken off on the 4th February. I see the 57 from Auchinairn Road to Silverburn; is this not going to Westerhill, as it used to go to Auchinairn Road before the 87 went to Westerhill? Or have they put up an old registration? They used to have changes in February.

With the changes only being a month away, hopefully we will see the timetables pretty soon. Interestingly, the likes of the 2 and 6 don't have changes in amongst the registrations so far.

The changes are also timed with the SPT service cancellations too.

Notice the 3 has Saracen Cross listed as a stopping point, wonder if this is route change or an error

Notice the 3 has Saracen Cross listed as a stopping point, wonder if this is route change or an error

"Route: Govan Helen Street to Drumchapel Station via Saracen Cross, Renfrew Street, Untion Street, Eglinton Roll, Shawlands Cross, Riverford Road, Pollok Centre, Linthaugh Road, Leverndale Hospital, Cardonald
Service number: 3
Service type: Normal Stopping
Effective date: 05 Feb 2023"
I think it's an error looking at previous registrations. Going back to the days of the 23, the registration has always had Saracen Cross listed. The 8 registration is another one that isn't quite the full route either as Partick is listed as the terminus and not the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and this has been the case in previous registrations for the 8.

There’s just a few more E400EVs to enter the fleet - was Glasgow really short of buses? I’ve noticed nothing has left the fleet while we continue to see more new stock. Are the 41 branded E400MMCs still going to Essex?

They were not going until the 50 single deckers arrived, if they are still going.

I wouldn't be surprised if at least a couple of services increased in frequency with the timetable changes now, going by the fact the number of cancellations seems to have come right down yesterday and today since timetables have gone back to normal. This, of course, will also require more buses too so it'll likely be a case where First don't want to rush fleet movements too quickly so there is scope for frequency increases.

No increases and some services reduced.

Thank you for the information. I'm surprised by that.

On another note, I've seen Streetlites used on more different services lately too. I seen a 1B yesterday that was one and now an 18 today.

Just seen on Facebook that there was a bus fire in Hamilton this afternoon. Apparently it was 33258 YX68UPK - is there any confirmation/details?

The 2 and 3 get them on occasion too to be fair. I think things must have been relaxed a lot at Scotstoun as far as allocations go. The E400s have been popping up on everything recently. The only Scotstoun based services I've not seen one on in the past month are the M11 and M60. The M11 can't use double deckers due to the low bridge at the bottom of Kilbowie Road but at one point, double deckers did appear on the M60 a lot especially in 2018 and 2019.
