From my experience, yes, those E400EV are not ideal during peak times when the buses are busy. I am on them pretty much every day as I get the 75 to college so I tend to sit upstairs
The 38s are always bursting also. Although I blame that primarily on the current cancellations and slashes to frequency.

From experience and what we've had on the app, the 38s to Newton Mearns seem to be getting cancelled an awful lot and the lettered variants especially the 38E can be really bad. I'm surprised the 38s weren't overly prioritised given how busy they can actually be.

The most frequent route is going to appear to have the most cancellations. The impact of 3 missing 38s is much less compared to 3 missing 46s for example!

The key is the fact that the 38 has the number of variants it does though. It technically has 6 if you count the short Eastwood Toll to Glasgow Fort ones and the 38A and then there's the fact there are a lot of every 30 minute variations. For me, that's why it should be a priority that 38s run.

There has been days where 4 out of 5 38Es etc haven't ran. One night last week had 3 38Cs in a row cancelled right as they drop to every hour too.

Driver shortages are unavoidable from the point of view that it's the entire industry suffering but the management of scheduling and the lack of timetable changes in recent months has been absolutely dreadful. I'd also be keen to know what management are doing to keep drivers too or if they even know how to at this point as it seems like they don't from what gets said on here sometimes. I've also seen some online comments from people who have wanted to apply but they won't adjust for the hours that person could do which is crazy in the current situation.

Timetables should have been changed to reflect the level of service they can run and not what they'd prefer to run. There are some days where it doesn't look as bad for part of the day but it hits the afternoon sometimes and services completely fall apart.

One plus point I will give them though is that they've added another feedback poster on some buses with the bus fleet number and the website for passengers to give feedback. I've only seen them on the Dumbarton E300s so far but it's something that should be done on all buses.

Cut the 38C and 38B back to the city centre only.

I unequivocally guarantee very little.

Changing to accommodate more people who need more flexibility is a no go for bus operators en masse, specifically because the management won’t change. In my pessimism I’d say it’s because it takes the control away from management if they are to accommodate too many people.

Private bus firms are always going to do this, specifically because the people who manage said operations using computers or uneducated middle-persons who to try and fix everything, they're desk jockeys not field operatives or bus drivers to actually see the extent of the problem.

Feedback means nothing, in reality it makes very little difference on the road.

Hi,

I tried to search back through the thread to see if this has been mentioned.

Passing down Pollockshaws Road yesterday and noticed that the bus shelter dot matrix displays were showing services as cancelled

They showed the bus details as normal, but destination cycled between the destination and "CANCELLED".

It was showing a few 57/57As as cancelled in the evening.

I have lived in Glasgow for 3 years and never seen this before, is it new?

From what I've seen it's just been the last 2-3 days where the boards have been updated to do this. The problem is that they're not necessarily accurate as I saw a 2 this morning showing as cancelled on one, but it ran. A lot of the boards are also never on, which doesn't help matters.

Hopefully First doesn't take too much longer with getting their cancellation feature on the app working fully, as it's still better than relying on those boards as much as I hate their app. It doesn't help that the companies don't really have anything to do with the boards. The main thing that's helped too is that SPT have finally updated an awful lot of the bus stops with the current timetables for each operator too.

Cutting both the 38B and 38C would leave Woodfarm and Rouken Glen without a bus for most of the day, other than the 374 that's SPT contracted. I fully agree with that regarding management control because unfortunately it's not exclusive to just bus companies either, from what I've seen and heard.

I think relying on technology is needed in this day and age but there are 2 key things you also need to do as a manager in any company in the industry and that's listening to drivers and seeing things for yourself on the road by monitoring certain locations for how late buses are and how busy they are. If I can see that's needed from outside the industry it's worrying that those with experience don't see it.

Customer service should be more key than it is with First. Obviously, some complaints are unrealistic but that goes for any company. There are certainly other things that customers complain about that need to be listened to.

I've had a lot of incredibly pleasant drivers lately but feedback regarding more rude ones does need to be addressed and responded to more often than not. I'm not saying it should result in major punishments etc but it's definitely something to work on in case it's a small thing the driver isn't aware of, for example. Obviously, the cleanliness and things like maintenance really should be addressed too.

I remember waiting over an hour for a 46 going home once, it was not ideal for a cold and dark winter night. Eventually when I got on the 46, the one in front of me (which appeared out of nowhere) was heavily packed leaving Glasgow Fort heading to Castlemilk and that was a Volvo B7RLE at the time. I was on a 9/9A branded Volvo B7RLE heading to Castlemilk at the time too.

Goes to show that cancellations for routes like the 46 are worse than that of the more frequent 38 for example, but still not great for passenger loads.

Thanks, good to know I am not going mad.

It is definitely a helpful feature, much better than it just disappearing from the board, leaving people in the dark over if its late and not just late and not being updated.

Only needs to be reliable now. I would be interested to find out where SPT got the data for cancellations from

For the bus stops, they really suit them tbh, much better than the First printed ones. Shame, buses disappear into thin air...
I'd still expect driver shortages to be a thing for at best the next 6 months to be honest. The only thing that gives First a slight advantage of getting new staff in is that they pay more than the likes of Mcgills and Stagecoach and in times like these it's key that they keep paying people more than anyone else although I can see it having to go up to £14-15 an hour soon enough.

I've seen multiple rumours of changes next month but I doubt it's too concrete given that the only thing registered is the change for the 500 on December 11th. They're also out of time to squeeze them in before Christmas now if a lot more is to come. I'd be shocked if cuts don't come though.

Some services seem fine for running up to about 1-2pm then fall apart horrendously. The 60/60A and 38s are particularly bad for this. Also, the 57s and 61s were having patterns of 3 cancelled in a row today at different times too. The app isn't always accurate for cancellations but Caledonia seem to use the feature more than Scotstoun at the minute while it's still being tested. I got an email back on October 26th saying that they had no exact date for it being fully working in our network but here's hoping it's soon.

The 7 and 7A get worse as the day goes on too but the 7 seems to be prioritised over the 7A going by the cancellations. The problem is with the 7A being longer in route, it requires more drivers. I'm surprised it's not been cut in route but the problem is that Osborne St is really awkward as a terminus and for parts of the day, the 31 and 65 are due very close together meaning that stop they both used is very tight spaced.

The 64 was already moved back a couple of stances because when the 31 ran to East Kilbride, the 3 buses were due to leave within 7 minutes of each other.

They could start the 7A at the 41's terminus. There's space there now that the 19 doesn't use it.

The 5 terminus could be moved all together to creat more space.

It picks up in osbourne street then immediately after turning left picks up the first stop, that’s very unusual, more services could be terminating on Cochrane street, only the 21 stops here and only every 30 minutes.

hypothetically you mean that the 7A could both terminate and start there like the 41 does?

The 41 often needs the space on west regent street as two 41s can often be there at the same time so that doesn’t work but may only clog up that stop/street more.

I’m almost certain the 19 got moved was for this specific reason.

However, west George street just next to Nelson Mandela place equally has far too many buses using this stop, 19, x19, 57s, all the 38s etc

The City Centre in general doesn't really have more spaces to use as terminus points, to be honest. Blythswood Square, where the 2 stops, is the only other one I can really think of, or St James Road just at Castle Street but you'd need the 19 to move to the same bus stop as the 38s to do that. The top of Hope Street is another but there isn't a great deal of space because of the 6 and 6A.

I honestly believe if there was a better space to use for terminus points then they'd pull some services out of Buchanan Bus Station, as getting in and out of it can take far too long at times, meaning buses end up leaving late or from the wrong stance. Plus it would save some money into the bargain.

Osborne Street is horrendous too, especially for the 1s as they end up getting blocked in by the bus in front if one comes in late behind one that's bang on time. I've witnessed a lot of tension between passengers and drivers as some buses end up having to pull in at the bus stop ahead of where they stop and, in some cases, the bus ends up just leaving without stopping because the driver doesn't realise that people actually want that bus.

Used a few services today. In general, if the service is meant to run at every 10 or 12 minutes, don't expect that. Seen 3 18s in a row go along St Vincent St and three 6s pass through Clarkston. The 6 I was on broke down after going into 10mph limp mode. The next number 6 was cancelled.

While waiting for the 201 at East Kilbride Bus station, it showed as Blantyre on the destination screen instead of Petersburn. Everyone at the stop was wanting Hamilton etc. The driver got out and explained to everyone there is not another driver to take over from him. The bus left the stance but returned a minute later as they found a driver to take it beyond the changeover stop. Very nice of the driver to return to the stance though made the service late.

The 18 would have been affected by the football today to be fair. The trains also being mostly off despite the strike being cancelled won't have helped much either. Monday will be the same as the trains aren't normal again until Tuesday now too.

I've noticed that the 4/4A and the 6 have been awful to use since Glasgow University students started again to be honest and that's before you factor in any cancellations which they're all unfortunately massively affected by.

The 201 is a weird service to me in the sense that the route was never ever split in two when all of the Glasgow to Hamilton services were split at Hamilton Bus Station. Hairmyres to Motherwell is already fairly long and hard to keep on time as it is without the rest of it to be honest.

Saturdays do absolutely seem to be First's busiest day to be honest now though although midweek has bounced back slightly in the off peak from experience. My 90 today was the only bus I was on that was a bit quieter but everything else was incredibly busy.

The cancellations seemed worse than they have been for a while on some services too. At one point 6 75s in a row were showing as cancelled on the app and by the looks of it from what I seen from the tracker, none of them actually ran. The 38s and 57s seemed awful too. I just wish it was fully accurate so we could tell and plan journeys our more easily because it's incredibly difficult at the minute.

The bus stop boards are so far from accurate too. I passed one at Ibrox with a 9 and 90 then a Mcgills 38 all showing as cancelled and by the next stop or two, all 3 of those buses had passed my 90. It doesn't help that the general public don't realise First don't have anything to do with controlling them either. The social media team tend to have to deal with a few complaints a day regarding the boards now and if anything it's been worse since cancellations have shown on them and it's only been this week from what I've seen.

I got an email back from their app team on the 26th about the cancellation feature being fully up and running and they said they had no clear date yet for when we would have it so I'm not getting my hopes up about it being anytime soon. I think I will actually faint out of shock when we do get it at this point as it's been so long since testing began. Last thing I need to say for a while on it though.

I’d avoid getting buses where you can right now. It’s absolutely brutal. Bus services are virtually non existent. When they do turn up - they are overloaded, drivers are harassed.

I’ve travelled on the 2s and 38s and it’s just a disaster. Major routes running on a half hourly frequency. Disaster

The scheduling of cancellations on the 38 seems to be utterly dreadful to be honest. The problem of the variations all having very similar route lengths to the eastbound terminus points from the city centre so they don't spread out whatsoever in either direction so if there are a lot of cancellations, they will stay together. It was mainly the 38E suffering before but over the last 2 weeks, the 38B and 38C have become really bad and unfortunately, the normal 38s are getting dragged into it.

The 2 during the week has been better recently with slightly less cancellations but runs late most of the time and at the weekend it's a mess although it's not helped by the football at Parkhead and Celtic are at home next Saturday too so it won't be any different. The only advantage is that there's a month without football at Parkhead after next weekend due to the world cup so it might help the locals for a bit although the 38s and 60/60A will probably only get worse with the shopping ramping up at Glasgow Fort.

The 60/60A are especially awful because of the route they take into Glasgow Fort also being right by the M8 cutoff. I've seen 60s take 20 minutes just to get into the stops due to how busy the car park entrances end up.

Some drivers don't help the issue. Multiple times this week I have witnessed double deckers sitting behind single deckers on the same route, letting the single take all the passengers and just hanging back about 10 yards at stops.

This seems to be really common on the 3, 41, 240 (bus hanging back being a single decker) and 61.

Edit: I apologize for the really rubbish formatting of the tables. In the editor they are formatted neatly but when I pressed the button to Post it compressed all the tables which is not what I wanted.
Edit 2: Think I've got the formatting as fixed as I can get it.
Edit 3: Added suggestions for where services could be cut to improve reliability.

Whenever I've seen the U1 its been a double decker.

The 263 is usually a single decker though I did get a double decker at peak.

255 is usually single decker now. 267 I would say is mostly double decker.

Apologies for another post from me.
Is the X11 run between Glasgow and Newmains (West Crindledyke) only? The Route Map, the old Network Map, and the timetable all show it as also running to Parkside/Cleland and Coltness (Terminus), but the timetable only has text entries for those additional two termini and no times against them, and bustimes.org only has one version of the route when you search for "X11" which runs to Newmains (West Crindledyke) only.
Can I check which is correct, and if does only run to Newmains (West Crindledyke), is this a temporary measure? Thanks.

The X11 is indeed between Buchanan Bus Station and Newmains, West Crindledyke only at the moment. I highly doubt it'll change again anytime soon either.

It's a strange service to be quite honest. It can be incredibly busy but the last journeys of the day from Newmains are incredibly early every single day. I always wondered if it could have been improved with later journeys pre-covid but with the current situation I doubt it'll ever happen now.

Multiple 41s and 60s cancelled also.

The 9 and 9A were bad yesterday too. The 9 I eventually got was very busy and our driver kept pointing people towards the bus in front of it. The strange part of this though is that the bus in front of my 9 was a McGill's 38 so basically handing competition some passengers.

The E200EVs are shockingly cramped when it comes to standing room too. The driver kept moaning about people not moving up the bus but truthfully there was nowhere to move to that wouldn't block anyone getting off. It didn't help that he kept saying there was seats at the back when in reality there was one for a few stops and that was it.

This is why privatisation isn’t going to work long term, that’s not to say that nationalisation will be any better for Glasgow.

It really is shambolic in no small part a problem First Bus has massively help cultivate here.

The brashness they’ve taken in thinking that continuing to order singles or doubles with lacklustre electrical range and no doubt planning to retire older vehicles such as the B9s which have been retrofitted for Euro6.

I understand there has to be a consensus on Zero Emission buses for the environments sake however before the present issues with lack of drivers therefore reduced frequencies which are not new problems have persisted for sometime.

You would think that First directors and managers would’ve been cautious about how the current circumstances in the city would’ve looked however I simply think that the companies directors and managers have been grotesquely naive regarding how things were panning out.

Brexit and COVID aside, what has the company done really to stave off the problems? Raise wages? It’s not good enough.

The Enviro 200 EV is a disaster in itself to think it was ever going to replace many of the tried, trusted and noticeably larger B7RLEs that came before them.

The 200 EVs have abysmal heating systems, often blowing cold air as the heat pump technology they use is simply not sufficient enough to heat said vehicle in winter of which the same system is fitted to the 400EV with an even larger interior, a solution to the problem in winter being Diesel-fired Heaters, which can be installed.

There are services I've said for years should never be majority single decker and honestly the 9/9A have been right up there since Simplicity happened. It's a ridiculously busy corridor even when everything runs.

The main thing going for First at the minute is that they pay more than anyone else does here although £15 an hour without the double pay overtime rate would probably work better at this point than £13 an hour with the overtime rate does. £15 an hour is about as far as Glasgow could probably stretch without issues given the current situation and anything beyond that would require big government funding or price increases.

It's the same in any industry to be honest. As soon as you put all of the monetary incentives on overtime then it makes the job far less attractive.

I'd imagine at this point though, mental health support due to the requirements of dealing with the public and a positive workplace is what the drivers need more than the workload that overtime comes with.

The 2, 3, 9/A, 240, 255, should all be either majority decker or all decker.

I took a 263 to Glasgow and it was standing room only by Cambuslang. It was a streetlite.
