Matt Damon in The Martian - Bloody hell! Hollywood can make intelligent sci-fi! After films like Avatar, Gravity and Prometheus I was beginning to doubt it. A bit slow and in some parts like a documentary it won't be to everyone's taste but it is well written, has a good cast, humour, they got the science right (or plausible at least) and some good music including David Bowie's Starman. I was also glad to see Benedict Wong who I've liked since he was in Sean Lock's 15 Storeys High; he seems to have made a speciality of sci-fi (Moon. Sunshine, Prometheus) and was pleased that Sean Bean wasn't required to put on an American accent. Perhaps a bit long at over 2 hours but still a solid 8.0/10

I think that is a superb film - it is funny and even the slow bits have a purpose and the documentary filming style in places is a good touch. Damon really pulls of the dry humor in a way i didn't think he could.

Was this on the TV - and, if so, do you know the channel? I'd be interested to know.

it is BAD! I watched it with my little nephew and even he said half was through that it was rubbish. It must be the worst film Harrison Ford has ever been in.

Which is a shame as the book is excellent.

I also think Toy Story 3 was good, I'm a little concerned still as to what happened to Bo Peep and RC, anyone know?
And the Yorktown station on "Star Trek" Beyond is not of a Federation design, it's way too big to say it was built next to unexplored space, the name should be in use by a Constitution Class starship, it might look nice but it's just one of many problems with the film's pre-Nero continuity errors

Yesterday I saw Flash Gordon, great music by Queen, great costuming for the women ( :) ) and the badguys, not so much for the birdmen. The story about Flash trying saving everyone and teaming up with various groups was nice. The fight scenes were good, the film was great in most regards, my only critizisms are that the Mongo Rogue Planet, it's moons, and the nearby space look more like floating islands in the sky, and also some of the laser effects weren't perfect.
4/5

Alien Extinction was the DVD we bought, interesting film, initially an asteroid in on target to destroy all life on Earth, and space travellers are sent to blow it up as usual for the movies, however they find it's an alien invasion force which soon attacks, the film even shows humans transporting to the alien homeworld. It was a good film, but it annoyingly ends, without an ending! Who won? No one knows, I dislike lazy screen writers who can't write an ending so the film's rating is lowered.

Toy Story 4 is currently being made. It will be directed by John Lasseter and will feature Woody and Buzz as they go on a journey to find Bo Peep and bring her back to Bonnie's.

I think that RC probably got sold in a yard sale or something. That's also probably what happened to Wheezy and Etch.

Thanks, that a relief, I was dreading she was knocked off a shelf and smashed or something. And RC run over or broke.

Project Almanac. Alright I guess. Very similar to The Butterfly Effect but not as good.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (Keanu). Alright I suppose.

The Scorch Trials. Alright yet again.

Blimey I have seen some very "Meh" films lately.

I disagree about Enders Game being awful, it is just "Meh". Ha ha. As for it being the worst film Harrison Ford has been in, it isn't anywhere near as bad as The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.

The Equalizer (Not the Ewar Woowar one). Loved it, Denzel can barely put a foot wrong in my eyes.

There is a sequel being made to the terribly dire 'is it a prequel or isn't it' Prometheus. Alien: Covenant is due out towards the end of next year. It's apparently "a direct prequel" to Alien and is said to be the second film in "a trilogy of prequels", though there has been mutterings of two or possibly three more films before the story gets to the 1979 classic. From what I've read about it, I'll be giving it a wide berth.

I caught a low budget British psychological thriller called Hush on Film4 last night.
A young man and his girlfriend are arguing as they drive up the M1 in the rain. They almost collide with a truck, and as the truck pulls in front, the rear shutter rolls up and the guy sees a woman, screaming and caged in the back of the truck.
They stop at a service station, where they argue again, and shortly afterwards, the girlfriend disappears.
The rest of the film deals with the guy trying to find out if his girlfriend has been kidnapped into the truck, and how to get her back if she has.

Yes, there's plenty of clichés, but it's well done and genuinely suspenseful. Worth checking out.

Scorched - Lightweight comedy with Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, Rachael Leigh Cook and John Cleese, not brilliant but nothing to complain about, a pleasant enogh way to spend 90 minutes - 6.0/10

From what I've read about it, I'll be giving it a wide berth.

That's how I feel about all these overhyped sci-fi blockbusters (particularly sequels and prequels) which usually end up as a load of CGI showboating covering up a poorly written film. The Martian was a pleasant surprise in that respect.

Yes, well, sequels, prequels and 'reboots' seem to have a formula to follow these days, lots of things you remember from the previous films, a couple of new bits that won't rock the boat too much, and pretty visuals.

The Martian comes from a book that is well regarded, though I've never read it myself, and it seems that, for once, Hollywood hasn't p****d around with it too much. It is a really good film, one I've seen maybe a dozen times already. For me, that's high praise.

2017 release date - hopefully explaining Prometheus

I'm sure they'll ruin it (again) somehow...

Was in hospital yesterday for what should have been a simple day operation but turned out to be a full 24 plus hours in there because of complications. Whilst sitting in the bed and feeling sick and sorry for myself, I looked through some of the films on the bedside TV and found "The Lego Movie". I have to say that it cheered me right up again. I loved how the characters seemed to know they were lego bricks, the wide range of characters from old romans to Abe Lincoln and Batman, the evilness of the bad guy and the rather funny spin on Bad cop/Good Cop made it a very enjoyable film indeed

Sorry to here about your hospital trip, get well soon HMS Ark Royal.

I did try and watch another Man from UNCLE film but the Sky Box messed up on the recording as usual ruining the fim with little or no sound.

So I had to watch..
Night of the Living Deb instead, it was a different type of Zombie film to usual, but it was enjoyable mostly.

Snatch - Got the DVD off the shelf for a bit of light relief, a sublimely British comedy with echoes of The Long Good Friday at the very end. 7.5/10

The Equaliser (my spelling) - Not as good as I'd hoped and not a patch on Man on Fire which is a similar revenge story, I was surprised to find it had the same director as Training Day another Denzel Washington film and an Oscar winner. 6.0/10

The Incredibles - These animated films never seem to disappoint why can't live action films be as consistent? 7.0/10

Funny you say that...

Finding Nemo - an absolute gem of a film. It's got actual pathos and actual humour; not crude, overstated or cheesy. 8/10, perhaps slightly more - something like an 8.3 is probably best.

Man On Fire is one of my favourite films. The Nine Inch Nails soundtrack is class as well as the rest of the film. I really liked Training Day but it isn't as good ass Man On Fire. Flight is also really good. Can't fault Denzel. I really can't.

Thanks, GrimsbyPacer... Back at home now, but with a crippling amount of pain and more medication than what you would find in a Boots!

Just finished my monthly viewing of Schindler's List - a film of incredible detail and the only film that Spielberg has never made a single penny out of. I watch it every single month, without fail, to remind myself of the horrors of war on innocents. A great film with important morals...

Rating: Unrateable

Keep meaning to watch the Lego movie. I have to accept that the kids are a bit old for it now though (although I'm not ).
Hope you're feeling better.

I watched the old Sinbad films. They are classic adventure at its best
5/5. Will watch the recent remake soon.
EDIT:
I have now seen Sinbad the Fifth Voyage and it's a continuation and not a remake, very faithful to the originals. Great scene with the genie.

I didn't enjoy Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, 2/5, although I haven't seen any Mad Max films before.

And somehow SyFy forgot to air Star Trek 10 :(

Interstellar - An epic piece of thoughtful sci-fi although I admit my heart sank when I saw it was 2½ hours long but as it turned out it needed to be and there was very little unnecessary padding. Interesting to see Matt Damon in a supporting role. 8.0/10

A Good Day to Die Hard - I started watching this about 30 minutes ago and I've already given up, it's awful. What an ignominious end to an otherwise great series.

Interstellar, can I just say the trans dimensional bookcase ruined it for me. They may as well have said "And it was all just a dream". He contacts his daughter by knocking books off a shelf and saves the human race. Bollocks.

It may have been a clumsy metaphor for something that is completely beyond our understanding or conception (even beyond the capabilties of CGI) but I think you need to look beyond that and try to imagine what they were trying to convey.

Can't believe The Departed hasn't been mentioned. Great story about organised crime and police corruption in Boston (Mass not Lincs!!) and cast. If you don't mind a bit of violence.
