All gone very quiet from FGWland regarding the 57s, is it right to assume the FGW 57/6 fleet are back to full strength and running reliably, and therefore no need for unreliable DRS hire ins?

57306 worked to Penzance on Wednesday night last week and the return on Thursday without issue.

57602 failed at Plymouth on 1C99 this morning with a GSMR fault. Set was sent to Laira to run to Longrock this afternoon as 5Z79. Which then got cancelled at Plymouth due to a train crew issue.

FGW Journey check says anticipated departure from Penzance to be 60L
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Left 112L but arrived destination 53L after the slack is there to make up time.

1A40 last night worked by HST due to brake and GSMR faults on loco (not sure which one). Left Penzance 70L (HST required servicing & Fuel first) and arrived Paddington 12E. Good job there's a lot of slack in the schedule to allow for diversions'

It was a hire in, 57306. Pendennis Castle rescued it to run ECS today with the coaches for tonights down.

So another DRS Caused failure again. That's 310, 312 and 306 that's all managed to fail so far. Has 303 achieved a failure yet? Only 305 is the only DRS hire in that didn't manage to fail!

1A40 last night 28 mins late departing Penzance due to an OTMR fault on 57604 which fixed by fitters from Long Rock. This increased to 40 minutes following an on time Cross Country service out of Cornwall but train was back on time by Reading.

Tonight's down sleepers from Paddington was 92 minutes late due to a DSD fault on 57602, it was replaced by 57604.

And there are still questions as to whether 1 or 2 67s could manage a 8-10 coach Night Riviera Sleeper service as well. A lot of things might have been suggested, but I'm still not convinced that either 1 or 2 67s could match a single reliable 57/6. And as you say Ash Bridge - GSMR/OTMR/DSD can occur on those as well. Equally, I still have doubts as to whether a 67 is more or less reliable than say 57604.

8-10 coach? Thought the Night Riviera was more like 6-8?

It varies, but mostly is now running around the 7/8 coach mark with 3 Seated and 4 to 5 Sleepers. Indeed FGW are now increasing each rake with the addition of an extra TS-D and an extra SLEP. Both are undergoing refurbishment to the new GWR scheme and will be in service from around June.

But of course one thing not mentioned by many is that while the Royal Mail services did run with 67s from PZ, a Mk1 based Mail Coach is a lot lighter than a Mk3, let alone a more heavier Mk3 Sleeper & RFM.

There could be an HST on the 1C99 Padd - Pnz sleepers tonight I am hearing. Not sure why but I think 57303 was due to work it.

Common theme approaching again... DRS...57.../3.

Hasn't 57303 been doing pretty well recently? It seems to have done every Friday for the last few weeks since it has been reported on the Saturday daytime working in that time. That must mean that it has been completing a lot of trips to Penzance and back without failure.

It turned out to be a fire alarm fault on one of the coaches. The whole train had to go back to Old Oak Common for the defective coach to be removed and then the stock went back to Paddington.

1C99 departed Paddington at 0310 hrs!
