Think Roy justified his selection to be manager, completely changed tactics to use andy Carroll to take the Swedish weaknesses apart, giving us the first goal. And excellent substitution bring on theo, my opinion of Roy has risen

Definitely a good move bringing on Walcott - seemed to reinvigorate the game, and put some drive back into England. The first 20 minutes of the second half were nail biting and I'd almost given up hope - just wish the defence hadn't been sloppy enough to allow Sweden their opportunities.

Oh, and I'm finally going to admit that I'm getting this football thing (I think!)

Greece have just scored against the run of play and just before half time.

elsewhere in group A: Czech 0 - 0 Poland (HT)

edit: Half time in both games now
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
That was unexpected.

Czech Republic and Greece go through, the latter thanks to the head to head [against Russia]

Who would have thought that Russia would be heading home after their performance in the first match in the group stage and even prior to the Euros.

Agreed and the same thing could happen to England so it is vital to beat The Ukraine by a sizeable score and avoid Spain in the next round :p

England could still end up playing Spain if France beat Sweden by at least the same number of goals. Also if England win the group and avoid Spain then they will likely end up playing Germany in the semi-final if they get there.

We are all talking up Spain winning their group, this assumes Croatia don't pull a shock out of the bag, and beat Spain tomorrow,

England has once again been lucky and will soon find itself knocked out.

Sweden scored two easy goals from set pieces. England should never have allowed that to happen. England will be ripped to shreds against Spain, Germany etc. England scored two fairly lucky goals. One extremely lucky, and the other shot straight down the centre caught the Swedish keeper literally off balance.

Sure, you often need luck, but the problem with England is that they ALWAYS seem to need luck - and that luck runs out against the big boys.

I'm also sure that once Rooney comes back, it will all be about him and the whole team element will run the risk of falling apart. I am unclear why everyone is seemingly so happy about him playing in the next game.

If we do go and win then feel free to quote this post back to me and rub my face in it!

But surely England could beat Spain. ;)

We beat them at Wembley 1-0 last year in a friendly, not just that but they were playing pretty much a full strength starting XI.

If England are to play Spain in the quarter finals, which i expect to happen then i predict it will be very much the Barcelona vs Chelsea Champions League semi-final, where England will be constantly defending.

As much as i would like England to win, i still reckon Germany will win it this year.

Luck doesn't run out so much as it becomes irrelevant because good teams don't concede such chances to be lucky. If that fails there is always a poor refereeing decision to blame with the implication that had said decision gone our way the whole game would have changed  - the game against Germany in the World Cup (2006/2010 not sure which) where Lampard's effort was not given despite crossing the line is a perfect example, forget the fact Germany outplayed England and should have won by far more than 4-2.

As for Rooney, it will be all about him at least in the media here and that could have disastrous implications on cohesion. It seems that for many managers now players get into the team based on their name or their past performance.
Granted Rooney has done well this season but I reckon he should start on the bench due to lack of match fitness and against Ukraine I can see him getting sent off because of his temper especially with a partisan crowd.

I think that what I hate most about the England team is that managers are not given a chance and get the blame for players who are no better than mediocre on the world stage. The coverage of Rooney is practically saying that he's the best thing since sliced bread. People are already judging Hodgson on two friendlies and two competitive games.

I hope Germany win it as reward for investing in their youth team and the way they play football over there.

There was an analysis of the match in the Times recently which, IIRC, pointed out that England had more possession, territory and shots in that game than Germany. The "outplayed" idea was an urban myth put about by journalists with knocking copy to sell.

I think a few on here are assuming Ukraine will not beat us.

I think it will be the hardest game so far,I can easily see us losing.

In that case I stand corrected

But that's the England way - it's never the fault of the team, or a case of them not being good enough.

Tournaments from 1994 onwards:

1994 Turnips!!!!!

1996 Penalties. Never mind the fact that we beat Spain on penalties having been highly fortunate to even reach a shoot-out.

1998 Beckham vilified for getting sent off. Yes, OK, he shouldn't have kicked out at Simeone, even if he was provoked, but if anything we played better after he went and could easily have won in the Second Half but for a foul by Shearer.

2000 Keegan. End of. There might actually be a case here.

2002 A freak free kick. And Scolari (as we would later find out) always beats Sven anyway, so it was destiny.
In practice, Seaman had had his day and wasn't really good enough by this stage.

2004 Scolari. Again. And then penalties. Again. Not to mention Rooney getting injured in the same game.

2006 The classic example. Rooney sent off, Ronaldo winking and then penalties. Against Scolari. Again. Few in the media industry seemed to accept that Rooney was not set up and deserved his red; Sven on the other hand is said to have gone to the referee's dressing room after the game and said, "He stamped on him, didn't he?" (Or something to that effect anyway.)

2008 Umbrellas. And McClaren. In practice, the team just couldn't care. Although I'm not sure if McClaren was really suited to international football as a full-time manager anyway.

2010 Lampard's non-goal. Against a team that would have beaten us anyway - and even if we held on after the non-goal, it would have been Penalties. Again. Against Germany. Again. Which we'd have lost. Again. And then that would be the problem. Again.

2012 If we fail against Ukraine, Rooney will get the stick. Again. For getting himself sent off. Again.

In other words, there's always an excuse. Even when we deserve to lose.

Possession doesn't win matches. Taking chances does. They were more clinical and deserved to win.

Not me (check the prediction league fixtures ;)). Ukraine have home advantage and will want to join fellow co-hosts Poland to be in the next round.

From tonight's game I want to see Portugal go home and for Ronaldo to bawl like a baby.

Of course you're right, I've edited the above post to reflect that. For some reason I thought they'd gone through

They could just decide to defend for 120 minutes and hope for a bit of luck with a set piece like the same or take their chance in the penalty shootout.

England actually did quite well to get through the second extra time with 10 men though and didn't do too badly in the penalty shootout. Seaman saved Crespo's penalty and Ince's was saved by Roa. The only strange part was the decision to let David Batty take the last penalty when he had never taken one before in his life.

2000 Keegan. End of. There might actually be a case here.
If Phil Neville hadn't fouled Moldovan right at the end of the match to give Romania a penalty then England most likely would have gone through

It was a very good goal by Ronaldinho though.

England would have avoided Portugal if they had beaten France in the first match. They were leading 1 - 0 at 90 minutes but then Zidane scored two stoppage time goals.[/QUOTE]

If Sol Campbell's legitimate goal had been allowed then we'd have won. Same story against Argentina in 1998.

Terry fouled Ricardo so it wasn't a goal. Same with Shearer in 1998. The only part that could be considered controversial is the fact that in both cases the referee allowed Portugal and Argentina to take a quick free kick while the England players were still celebrating. Both teams were able to quickly attack as a result of this and had a shot at goal. If either had scored and England been elimated as a result then I expect a lot more people would be complaining about it. As it was, it didn't decide the match and England had their chanced to win in the penalty shootout in both matches.

I don't deny that. But they were not comprehensively outplayed. IMHO, it is a worse criticism that they didn't score from the chances they had. No shame in losing to a better team, but losing to a team you have more than equalled.......

Spain are looking impressive (again) tonight, from what I've seen so far this tournament, it will probably either them or Germany who win it.

But ....

Goal line officials. What are they there for? Decoration purposes?

Sergio Ramos slides in on the Croat #17 (I can't spell his name) inside the box, right under the nose of the GLA. Not only does Ramos fail to win the ball, he fouls the player in the process. However the GLA gives no advice to the referee, and it's the ref who gives a corner.

In all the Europa Cup/CL/International matches I've seen that have used GLA, I have not seen them once give advice to the referee, or give an decsion themselves. If all they do is stand there, then why are they used?

You know the Offside Rule is useless when that Spain goal was correctly declared legitimate <(<(

In case you can't guess, I'm not a Spain fan. Bunch of primadonna show-offs.
