I've just realised what makes such a pleasant change. There's none of those bloody vuzuvela thingies.

Who would have thought that Russia would be heading home after their performance in the first match in the group stage and even prior to the Euros.
England could still end up playing Spain if France beat Sweden by at least the same number of goals. Also if England win the group and avoid Spain then they will likely end up playing Germany in the semi-final if they get there.Agreed and the same thing could happen to England so it is vital to beat The Ukraine by a sizeable score and avoid Spain in the next round
But surely England could beat Spain.![]()
England has once again been lucky and will soon find itself knocked out.
Sweden scored two easy goals from set pieces. England should never have allowed that to happen. England will be ripped to shreds against Spain, Germany etc. England scored two fairly lucky goals. One extremely lucky, and the other shot straight down the centre caught the Swedish keeper literally off balance.
Sure, you often need luck, but the problem with England is that they ALWAYS seem to need luck - and that luck runs out against the big boys.
I'm also sure that once Rooney comes back, it will all be about him and the whole team element will run the risk of falling apart. I am unclear why everyone is seemingly so happy about him playing in the next game.
If we do go and win then feel free to quote this post back to me and rub my face in it!
There was an analysis of the match in the Times recently which, IIRC, pointed out that England had more possession, territory and shots in that game than Germany. The "outplayed" idea was an urban myth put about by journalists with knocking copy to sell..... forget the fact Germany outplayed England and should have won by far more than 4-2.....

I think a few on here are assuming Ukraine will not beat us.
I think it will be the hardest game so far,I can easily see us losing.
Luck doesn't run out so much as it becomes irrelevant because good teams don't concede such chances to be lucky. If that fails there is always a poor refereeing decision to blame with the implication that had said decision gone our way the whole game would have changed  - the game against Germany in the World Cup (2006/2010 not sure which) where Lampard's effort was not given despite crossing the line is a perfect example, forget the fact Germany outplayed England and should have won by far more than 4-2.

Ukraine have home advantage and will want to join fellow co-hosts Poland in the next round.

I must have been dreaming that Poland failed to qualify for the quarter finals then ....
They could just decide to defend for 120 minutes and hope for a bit of luck with a set piece like the same or take their chance in the penalty shootout.England will be ripped to shreds against Spain, Germany etc.
England actually did quite well to get through the second extra time with 10 men though and didn't do too badly in the penalty shootout. Seaman saved Crespo's penalty and Ince's was saved by Roa. The only strange part was the decision to let David Batty take the last penalty when he had never taken one before in his life.1998 Beckham vilified for getting sent off. Yes, OK, he shouldn't have kicked out at Simeone, even if he was provoked, but if anything we played better after he went and could easily have won in the Second Half but for a foul by Shearer.
If Phil Neville hadn't fouled Moldovan right at the end of the match to give Romania a penalty then England most likely would have gone through2000 Keegan. End of. There might actually be a case here.
It was a very good goal by Ronaldinho though.2002 A freak free kick. And Scolari (as we would later find out) always beats Sven anyway, so it was destiny.
In practice, Seaman had had his day and wasn't really good enough by this stage.
England would have avoided Portugal if they had beaten France in the first match. They were leading 1 - 0 at 90 minutes but then Zidane scored two stoppage time goals.[/QUOTE]2004 Scolari. Again. And then penalties. Again. Not to mention Rooney getting injured in the same game.

Terry fouled Ricardo so it wasn't a goal. Same with Shearer in 1998. The only part that could be considered controversial is the fact that in both cases the referee allowed Portugal and Argentina to take a quick free kick while the England players were still celebrating. Both teams were able to quickly attack as a result of this and had a shot at goal. If either had scored and England been elimated as a result then I expect a lot more people would be complaining about it. As it was, it didn't decide the match and England had their chanced to win in the penalty shootout in both matches. If Sol Campbell's legitimate goal had been allowed then we'd have won. Same story against Argentina in 1998.
I don't deny that. But they were not comprehensively outplayed. IMHO, it is a worse criticism that they didn't score from the chances they had. No shame in losing to a better team, but losing to a team you have more than equalled..........Possession doesn't win matches. Taking chances does. They were more clinical and deserved to win.
Spain are looking impressive (again) tonight, from what I've seen so far this tournament, it will probably either them or Germany who win it.
But ....
Goal line officials. What are they there for? Decoration purposes?
Sergio Ramos slides in on the Croat #17 (I can't spell his name) inside the box, right under the nose of the GLA. Not only does Ramos fail to win the ball, he fouls the player in the process. However the GLA gives no advice to the referee, and it's the ref who gives a corner.
In all the Europa Cup/CL/International matches I've seen that have used GLA, I have not seen them once give advice to the referee, or give an decsion themselves. If all they do is stand there, then why are they used?
