Have we been on the same trams? Every time I've used the trams (usually what I'd consider quiet times), they've been pretty well loaded, even at each end of the line.

Well I went to and from Edinburgh Park to the Airport on Friday Morning returning Sunday Evening last week both services were lightly loaded.
From the Airport the last service at 2245 seems a bit early with flights still coming in and clearing baggage etc.
They have conductors on every service which must cost a fortune, most other tram services do not feature this luxury

Both Midland Metro and Sheffield Supertram also have conductors on each service so they are definitely not alone.

What about The Manchester one that is much bigger than either of those ? I was thinking of Switzerland where I have been subjected to a "random check" by Inspectors.

The "random check" system is pretty much universal for trams on the Continent, probably because it's not practical for a conductor to get round between stops.
Nottingham tram used conductors when it first started but the present operator went over to buy before boarding with random checks. The on-the-spot £50 fine has caused them a fair amount of grief from the local press. Metrolink and Tramlink have always used this system, as did Supertram in the very early days.

not so; you must buy your ticket (or touch-in your travelcard) before getting on the tram.
There is a Customer Service Representative on each tram to inspect the tickets - but they are not conductors, as they don't sell them.
The point is important; on systems with a conductor, anyone who can avoid their attentions can legally ride for free. Not so in Edinburgh.

Actually they do sell tickets but at a tenner there are not many takers
There was a Yank on the tram with no ticket and he happily paid up what I suspect is in reality a penalty fee.

Doesn't stop people doing it.
I've seen people without tickets avoiding their attention to travel for free every time I've used the tram.

Amsterdam has ticket sellers on the trams in a 'cubicle' near the entrance door.

More peak services now to be introduced. So more trams out. That must mean then that maybe the early morning trams that go in and do not come out again that day now stay out? Would be interested to know the diagrams turns now?

Edinburgh tram conductors need better ticket training, one member of staff tried to charge me a penalty fare for holding a valid plusbus (and not in the airport zone)!

3 more trams an hour for two hours in the morning and evening peaks, so guess that would be around 6 more diagrams during those two hours?
Although you had a had experience with one of the conductors, does not mean that they all do not know that you were valid with your plusbus. I would simply give them a email to let them know that the conductor needs to be familiarized on those sorts of tickets.

Im afraid this isnt an isolated incident where valid tickets arnt accepted. From what Iv heard the staff turnover at this level is high.
Good to hear the peeks are to be looked at as whilst not sure what city centre is like the western end around gyle, Edinburgh Park and airport is very busy and of course the many tourists use them

Higher than you might expect.
I'm not sure any of the original drivers or conductors from when they started running are still there.

Puirly my own views here but I dont blame anyone that has left to do better things
To expand further on my comments about the Gyle, Edinburgh park etc being busy I was talking to a taxi driver friend on facebook recently and he says the number of jobs hes getting out that way both for local trips and the airport have gone through the floor

The last tram at 2245 from the Airport is to early as connections at Edinburgh Park for people going to Falkirk etc run up until 2345 from EDP.
Also the fare for the last bit to the Airport being 3 times as much as from York Place to the cut off point for the Airport Zone is a rip off.
The 35 Bus goes right in and charges the £1.60 not £5.40

You can take the tram to Islington Park and Ride, and then change into the 35 for the last bit.The 35 Bus goes right in and charges the £1.60 not £5.40

With supreme irony, I have just read in Rail 806 that the inquiry into why the construction of the Edinburgh tram system went so much over budget has itself gone 50% over budget... :roll:

With a high turnover, how long will it be until the trams are run without the second member of staff on board, replaced by RPIs. Similar to Manchester & Nottingham (with a higher "standard" fare if someone is caught without ticket)
Maybe with "gates" to access the tram platforms at the airport to keep up the premium fare

I used the tram begrudgingly on Wednesday Morning to get to the Airport from Edinburgh Park - £5.50 is a rip off !!!
Just to make sure people were being subjected to the extortion they had RPI's on the Gates at the Airport - I've never seen that before !!!

Extortion? Nobody is forcing you to use it. Use the 100 Airport bus.

Unfortunately it does not stop at Edinburgh Park. All I'm trying to establish is why it's more than three times more expensive to go to the Airport than it is into the City on the Tram from Edinburgh Park. The journey to York Place is actually further.
In all seriousness with a couple of people it would be as cheap to get a Taxi .
