Well my thoughts are that he's the Doctor that fits in between McGann and Eccleston, specifically the Doctor that ended The Time War that destroyed Gallifrey and the Daleks. Which to my mind explains why Smith's Doctor reacts so negatively towards him and why he would have been 'erased' from his active memory. If I'd been responsible for wiping out my whole species I don't think I'd want to spend much time thinking about it!

That does seem to be the most popular and prevalent theory on the web.

That's Kate O'Mara or was :p

Yes, even when she was dressed like Bonnie Langford!

However Kate O'Mara was dressed thirty years ago she was a cracker of the first order - am I allowed to say that ?

The impression I got from the closing scenes of the last episode was that this new 'Doctor' was a previous regeneration who had acted under a name other than 'The Doctor'.

Not only do we have the speculation on where John Hurt fits into the wibbley wobbley timey wimey line of the Doctor* we now have to contend with a couple of months speculation on who will replace Matt Smith at Christmas.

From the BBC:

Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at the end of year

By Tim Masters
Entertainment correspondent, BBC News

Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced.

After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith's Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special.

The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been "the most brilliant experience".

Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed.

The BBC said Smith's "spectacular exit" was yet to be revealed and would be "kept tightly under wraps".

Smith first stepped into the Tardis as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Taking over from David Tennant, he was the youngest actor to play the role.

Speaking after the announcement, he said he was "incredibly proud" of what the show had achieved over the last four years under Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer.

Smith also thanked fans around the world for their "truly remarkable" dedication to the show.

During his tenure, Smith's floppy-haired, bow tie-wearing Time Lord has fought enemies such as Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and the Silence.

His Doctor has shared his adventures with Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently, Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman).

Referring to his time-travelling companions, Smith said: "It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go..."

Show runner Steven Moffat said: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry - I just never knew what was coming next.

"The Doctor can be clown and hero - often at the same time - and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor."

Moffat added: "Great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break as we say goodbye to number 11. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler."

The announcement of Smith's exit is likely to spark months of fevered speculation about his replacement.

*I reckon John Hurt is the ninth Doctor, between McGann and Eccleston. - a 'bad' regeneration but redeemed himself in the time war. For some reason, the memory of his existence has been missing from subsequent Doctors. Possibly traumatic amnesia.

As for speculation on Matt Smith's replacement. I'm going for a left field suggestion of Stephen Merchant!

Doubtless we will find out very soon. If it is not John Hurt, then on recent history it will be a youngish actor who is not very well known, and who has not appeared as a leading actor in any major films or TV dramas.

As a very outside bet - could Jenna-Louise Coleman transmute into a new Doctor ?

Thats a step to far in my view - exemption required under the sex discrimination act (Gallifrian Code) :p

I'm not sure that this description would apply to Christopher Ecclestone or David Tennant when they were cast, but it certainly holds true for Mr Smith!

I see Rory Kinnear seems to be the latest favourite for the new Doctor - is he the late Roy Kinnears son ?

I was watching BBC Breakfast Time this Morning and they had an actor on from "The League of Gentlemen" - he mentioned he was playing Patrick Troughtons Doctor in the 50th Show in November - suprised they didn't get one of Troughtons sons to reprise their fathers Doctor.

He also mentioned David Bradley was playing William Hartnells Doctor.

Does anyone know apart from Tennant if any other incarnations are to be included and will Davidson or any of the other former "living" Doctors appear.

That's Reece Shearsmith and it is correct. I haven't seen any pics of him as Troughton, but I don't think his offsrping look enough like Patrick to be able to play him playing the Doctor.

Now Sean Pertwee as his father...I can see that somehow!

Internet opinion seems to be mostly negative on this one. Though I would not be amazed if the writers produce something rather unexpected!

An announcement from the BBC at midnight tonight 2nd August 2013.

Expected to be a trailer and press release advertising a special "Introducing the New Doctor" TV show broadcasting on BBC1 on Sunday 4th August at 7pm. That show will reveal the new actor playing The Doctor.

Can't provide any links to official confirmation as the only details were briefly posted on Metro's (the free paper) website and then hastily removed. Presumably they jumped the gun on an embargoed press release. Plenty of fan sites have picked up on this though.

The pulled Metro article:

The wait is almost over for Doctor Who fans, as the identity of the next actor to play the Doctor is to be revealed in a special one-off Doctor Who Live broadcast on BBC One this Sunday August 4 at 7pm.

In front of a live studio audience, host Zoe Ball will unveil and interview the 12th person to play the Time Lord, one of the most coveted roles in British television.

The half hour programme will feature Doctors old and new, companions, special guests and celebrity fans, all taking place against the backdrop of a swirling vortex with Daleks and the TARDIS stationed in the studio.

Earlier in the week the BBC disguised the show in the TV listings, scheduling a fake ‘Celebrity Mastermind’ in the 7.30pm-8pm slot.

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will end months of speculation over who will be taking over from Matt Smith, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Ben Whishaw and David Harewood having all been linked with the role, though an unknown actor is perhaps far more likely.

Executive producer Steven Moffat said : ‘The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.’

Moffat and Smith will both give interviews during the show, commenting on the role and what they believe it takes to play the Doctor.

Fans in America will be able to watch the unveiling live via simulcast on BBC America.

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One said : ‘BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.’

Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning meanwhile, revealed how they have been using the codename Houdini for the actor.

He said: ‘We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.’

Rory Kinnear had also been tipped as a possible Doctor, but after insisting that he won’t be joining the show his denial was compounded by his signing up to ITV drama Lucan, which films at the same time.

And the link that now goes to Metro's homepage after briefly returning a 404 error: http://metro.co.uk/2013/08/01/new-d...o-be-unveiled-this-sunday-on-bbc-one-3908220/

Ffs it's a new actor in a tired sci-fi series - they're not announcing the return of the Messiah. He's not the Messiah...

is it true that Malcolm Tucker (alias Peter Capaldi) is to be the new Doctor Who?

I would love it LOVE IT if he played it in Tucker mode!

So it's Peter Capaldi; after all the press I'm not surprised and am looking forward to him playing the part.

So, Peter Capaldi is the new doctor, what do we think?

I am suprised and encouraged by the fact they selected an older established actor for the role rather than "a kid"

Anyone got the "heads up" on Davros making an appearance in the "50th " show in November ?

Watched the show on BBC 4 last night about the History of Dr Who.

Couldn't help feeling it was heavily accentuated towards the revival from Ecclestone onwards.

For example Simms Master was prominent with hardly any mention of Delgado or Ainley.

Why was (to many people) the definitive Dr Who Tom Baker not interviewed while Mcgann (a one hit flop) spoken to extensively :o

At least Davros featured quite a bit.....and he'd better be in Saturdays Special Day of the Doctor :p

I've not seen the special yet but McGann has been in a lot of Dr Who adventures - they're just almost all audio ones - the TV movie is probably the worst of his - it's a shame we didn't see more from him on screen. I have been quite impressed by some of them, especially with his assistant played by Sheriden Smith.

I'd agree that if you're interviewing Doctors then Tom Baker is an obvious one for the list.

Perhaps Tom Baker refused to participate. Talking of Bakers , Colin Baker has not worn well - he was bloated and old looking.

Goes anyone remember the Davison / Baker (c) regeneration when Peri's assets stole the show :p

I even heard chatter about Omega (http://who-reviews.com/post/50584838531/more-of-the-50th-anniversary-script-leaked (please scroll past the ads - it's the best source that I could find)) although how credible it is is anyone's guess, since some of Omega's lines are very similar to the 1973 special "The Three Doctora". It would also explain the Omega symbol that appears on military uniforms in various 11th Doctor episodes "The Time of Angels"/"Flesh and Stone" (the crash of the Byzantium) and "A Good Man goes to War"...

as well as everything else that Steven Moffat as head scriptwriter hasn't accounted for (like the TARDIS exploding in "The Pandorica Opens"/"The Big Bang")...

Is anyone going to the cinema to see it - I'm working so will have to "tape" it.

Does anyone else believe Davros should be in it ?
